“Beautiful location and friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

This hotel's location is superb. It is in a converted mill right next to a picturesque river, with views of steam trains from the bedroom window.
The bedroom was very spacious and clean with really large windows. It was a nice spot to sit and relax. There was absolutely loads of storage, although the hangers in the wardrobe weren't strong enough to hang coats on. The mattresses were a little on the bouncy side, but adequate. The bathroom was very good and clean with an efficient shower, but the decor was a little tired in places.
Breakfast was fairly good - bacon, sausages, eggs, beans, tomatoes and mushrooms from the self-service counter, with toast and tea brought to your table. However some mornings the sausages weren't very well done (probably when we got down a bit late) and the scrambled egg was usually tasteless (but the staff will order eggs cooked fresh by the chef).
The lounge bar was lovely with nice furniture, a cosy atmosphere and views over the river.
The Dolly Bar downstairs was not quite so sumptuous but was fairly pleasant, if a little draughty. This is where the informal meals were served. The food was standard pub grub and the menu was a bit limited, although I believe they are introducing a more wide-ranging menu shortly.
The Riverside restaurant downstairs was very good. It was in the same room as breakfast, although different lighting altered the atmosphere completely. The food here was excellent and the service was "silver service" standard. There was, however, a slight issue with reception to the restaurant. When you turn up you are supposed to peruse the menu in the lounge bar then be led to your table when it's ready. We were not made aware of this process, so we had to go back up to the lounge bar (where we'd already been sitting for half an hour, relaxing with a pre-dinner drink) for another half an hour to choose our food.
The leisure club looked really lovely, but the only occasion we found time for a swim, the pool had to be closed due to an accident. Not really a fault of the hotel, but we were very disappointed.
Overall, the hotel is comfortable and clean, and the staff are extremely friendly. I would certainly pay a return visit.

Bed uncomfortable, hardest pillows ever used, gave me neck and headache. Toilet in room so close to wall, had to sit sideways on it. Staff and management appeared to be in disarray, desks often not manned. Pool and spa were very good and nice and clean. Food was reasonable although I felt over priced for dinner in main restaurant.

Stayed as part of a weekend touring the lakes, Great location, leisure club was good, food was good. the room was mostly good but the overall feeling was of a hotel that with a little bit more care and attention could be great. Service was not great, there were some mix ups with my booking and the meals, whilst not slow, it felt like the waiting staff were not well organised. the room was not dirty, but I did see some cobwebs in a back corner and there was damage to some of the bathroom fittings. a pleasant stay but could have been even better, especially for the price.

Room Tip: Four poster has lovely views, but proximity to river would not be good for light sleepers

The room was £160 a night and was clean, but dated. Not what you would expect in this day and age. We had booked a four-poster bed superior room, but when we got there they had only booked us a standard room. They tried to get us a room with a better view to compensate, but they couldn't get us what we booked. The breakfast was a buffet and was quite nice. Not a lot of continental choices, but the hot food was good. The pool area rarely gets busy which is great. We didnt use the spa so i cant comment on this. The bar staff were friendly and speedy. Its a nice enough place, but for the money i would have expected a better room.

Nice location, good facilities.
Parking seemed to get a bit busy, maybe with gym users.
Room passable, but a bit dated and small. NIce big bath, good selection of tea/coffee/biscuits.
Breakfast good quality, but buffet one day and table service next day for some reason.
The staff are mostly young and, although not unfriendly or incapable, need some leadership and standards to work to. Slow service, no greeting, floundering with little training or support by the feel of it.

Staying at the hotel currently, and very impressed with staff so far. Given an early check in, after a 4 hour drive, was very welcome! Internet wasn't working in first room, so staff member (Mel) tried several different rooms until I was happy. Top service!! Gym very good and views are fantastic. Will definitely be back.

We had booked a spa day at the Cascades Health Cub inclusive of one 30 minute treatment each and afternoon tea. On arrival we were met with a young female receptionist, who although very polite, didn't appear to be staff, she was dressed in a hoody, scarf and trainers and didn't clearly represent staff. She explained there was complimentary tea and coffee from the vending machine. We made use of this while we waited for our treatments. We were provided with robes, and had a deep tissue massage each on a heated massage bed. Afterwards we made use of the pool, steam room and sauna. Our afternoon tea had been booked for 3pm and we thought this was a long wait after our appointment time so we asked to bring it forward. This was accommodated no problem however the food itself was a little disappointing. We had a round of sandwiches each with our choice of filling and bread and a scone with jam and cream and cakes. Tea and coffee/drinks were not provided but were available from the vending machine free of charge. There were no cups and we used paper ones. It would have been nice to have tea from a teapot in proper cups rather than vending machine tea in disposable cups. The food wasn't great, a selection of different sandwich fillings would have been preferable. The young girl on the spa reception also appeared to be doubling up as a waitress and often wasn't around when we wanted something or when other guests arrived at the spa. I went to get changed afterwards and the shower wasn't running hot. I asked the spa staff who couldn't get it hot either. There were however other showers downstairs in the gym to use. The outdoor hot tub was out of use which was a shame although this was advertised on the website prior to our arrival. The view of the river from the spa was beautiful and on a sunny day I am sure it would be lovely to sit out in the hot tub and enjoy lunch outside. The spa seemed to have a good choice of treatments and facilities. They don't provide slippers so you need to take flip flops or just walk in bare feet as we did. It may also be an idea to take books/magazines as there are loungers and chairs on the pool side on which to relax. We can't comment on the hotel itself as we did not stay here. We went on to eat dinner later in the day at Zefferellis vegetarian restaurant in Ambleside.

Room Tip: we only used the spa and did not stay at this hotel.
