“Good Eatery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

The Swan Hotel is in an attractive location at the southern end of Lake Windermere. The bar has a nice atmosphere and helpful staff. The menu offers a wide range of dishes at reasonable prices, especially the starters. An appetising and quite substantial lunch can be created by combining a few starters together which can be shared between several people.

Room Tip: Cannot comment, only ever used the bar restaurant

We'd spent the day in the lakes and were feeling cold and hungry so we popped into the Swan Hotel. I was really impressed.

It looked fantastic from the outside, being a large traditional-Lakeland building set on the waterfront. Inside was even more impressive. Walking past the sophisticated spa we went into the restaurant and bar: polished wood, simple colours, all warmed by a real fire.

It was busy but not uncomfortably full. There was an extensive wine list and good real ales. The meals weren't cheap but that reflected the standard: the food was local, high-quality and cooked freshly, the only complaint being the limited vegetarian selection.

For a stylish place to eat out in the Lakes, this would be high on my list.

Just arrived home from a fabulous weekend break at this Hotel & Spa.

Upon arrival we were allocated our room which overlooked the river and gave us a stunning view.
We stayed for 2 nights and pushed the boat out to live a weekend of luxury - which we pretty much achieved.

We felt like The Lord and Lady of the manor sitting in our 'hotel dressing gowns' eating our room service breakfast over looking the water. (£3 tray charge to bring to room).

The food and drink were excellent and service was efficient. The bar was modern with a great atmosphere, comfortably busy without making it difficult to find a table (although this did lead to having to wait whilst 2 red wine glasses were washed for us on the evening of day 2)!

The room was very comfortable with added bonus of docking station. We also found the daily newsletter left on your bed really handy with suggested walks and weather updates.

We had a fantastic weekend with nothing really to complain about and will definitely be returning very soon.

Room Tip: Room overlooking the river is a MUST

It's one of the reasons that you pay a bit more for 'somewhere nice' - The food is first class! I had one of the beef specials and a crumble and custard in the restaurant. I was only disappointed when I looked down to see that I'd eaten the lot but was pleasantly full. Compliments to the chef - outstanding. The champagne lunch was a lovely welcome too - hearty sandwich after a long drive hit the spot. The breakfast menu has a good choice - all cooked to order. There's also a table with cereal, fruit, bread, fruit juices etc. Great selection of drinks - the prices were reasonable too (Although it can't hurt to take some of your own for the room).

We almost booked somewhere else until trip advisor brought our attention to Swan Hotel and we were pleasantly surprised. Room (14) was great - it had a nice view of the river - plenty of space, nice tv, big bathroom and very clean. Staff were friendly, some asked if you'd had a nice day - or asked how you are, which is nice. Relaxed atmosphere too.

The spa facilities were good, I would have preferred the spa and sauna/steam room to be hotter - although I imagine older residents would disagree. We both had an hour long massage, although, it may have been closer to 45 mins actual massage time. My other half had a chat afterwards about what she could do to help some of the aches. There's lots of space to sit inside and outside next to the relaxing river.

The location is nice for some short local walks. We popped to Bowness-on-Windermere which was only a 10-minute windy road car ride away and Ulverston. In terms of people, there were couples similar age to us (late 20s/30s), families, and not as many older people as I thought. We did a Sunday-Tuesday - so it was probably quieter than usual, but that suited us fine.

Room Tip: No tips for a room but the £99per person on Thurs or Sun is a good deal - with 1 hour treatment, cha...

We were staying at a nearby hotel but decided to have lunch here. Managed to visit twice whilst we were in the area and we weren't disappointed. The bar/restaurant can be very busy but there is normally a table available. Recommendations- Fish Finger Butty and chips, Burgers and chips. Yes there are some "fancy" options but it all depends what you want. A great place to take the family.

Lovely hotel, with lovely rooms, nice and helpful reception staff. Gym and Spa good quality, not the best I've been to but very nice.
The bar is very trendy with great atmosphere. Although it did take quite a time to get a drink.
The restaurant however, was not 4 star by a mile. I was expecting four star fine dining cuisine, but instead I got less than average pub/bar food at a table in the restaurant area. The menu was as bland as the food and In my opinion the dishes served suffered from being a mismatch of ingredients and flavours. (Slow cooked Ox cheek with a thick red wine source , over noodles coated in basil pesto? Odd! Didn't work).
The waiter was moody and rather robotic, who did not listen to requests and continued with his pre-programmed activities.
Breakfast was not a great experience either with my wife's pancakes burnt on the bottom.
Overall, a 3.5 star hotel with a two star restaurant. Stay at the hotel but eat elsewhere if you want 4 star food.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have a lovely view of the bridge and the river, but suffer from the road nois...

£99p/p for a Thursday stay inc 1 hr spa treatment of choice, champagne and sandwich - was nice to be offered alternative drink and any item and item off pub menu upto £12 in value. Hotel beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean throughout. Staff efficient and pleasant. Pool and jacuzzi downstairs - clean changing rooms with lockers provided and warm pool. Spa upstairs and again clean and lovely staff. Restaurant busy at night but didn't wait long for food; (halloumi kebabs - portion could have been a bit bigger). Breakfast excellent. Slept well, fed well, relaxed and looking forward to future visit.
