“return visit to a dog friendly hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

Stayed at this hotel about 18 months ago, and enjoyed it very much so .we returned again this week. The staff are very attentive, and welcoming. We had a lovely well equipped room, and just as before the food was excellent. Enjoyed walking with the dog each morning in the extensive grounds. Just before we left a red squirrel came right up to the door of the main enterance. We will certainly be visiting this hotel again in the future.

We only live about 10 miles from Overwater Hall but it was still a great place to go for a night and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, switch off and relax. The food was fabulous, some of the best we have ever had. Our room was lovely and it was great to be able to take our dogs with us and walk back home the next day. I hope we get to go this again sometime soon, we'd love to go back again.

This is quiet small hotel with a friendly, but not pushy group of staff who look after you excellently with polite, but not stuffy decorum. The room was well equipped and comfortable and the food was great (both breakfast and dinner) Remember to take a shirt for the evening!

Dogs really are welcomed.

The grounds are teaming with birds as well as red squirrels and binoculars are recommended if you are interested.

I warmly recommend this hotel.

Once again I returned to this haven of tranquility, and sheer perfection. There is really not much to add to my previous review of 'Overwater' but I am amazed that such total quality and in particular the outstanding food does not reflect in a waiting list to actually stay there.
On this occasion I sampled one of Luke's cocktails - another quality experience. Rhubarb Martini
If only Angela, Stephen and Adrian could work on the weather - there would be no better place to spend a holiday.
Long may they all continue to own and run this wonderful place

Room Tip: They are all excellent - some just bigger

Overwater Hall looks a little quirky and slightly out of place in its remote and incredibly beautiful surroundings with Skiddaw in the near distance. But this anamazing hotel! The welcome we received was really warm and helpful. The public rooms are sumptious and comfortable and the hotel has some lovely gardens. Our bedroom was one of the corner turret rooms with a fourposter bed, great bathroom and lots of comfort including good fresh coffee and home-made shortbread. We really enjoyed pre-dinner drinks in the lounge while we played scrabble and looked forward to our evening meal. The meal was absolutely sensational. We have eaten in some good michelin starred restaurants and this was as good, if not better, than anything we have ever had. Everything delighted and there wasn't a single weak element. This was cooking to the highest standard - absolutely delicious and beautifully presented and with really gracious service. We had a fantastic evening and felt it was worth every penny to get food of this quality. We had a great night's sleep and a great breakfast but it was the evening dinner for which I would cross continents!

It's difficult finding quality places to overnight in the Borders especially when you have your dog with you. Overwater ticks all the boxes !
Fantastic location in private grounds so no issues for dog walking.
Friendly reception, spacious room (garden room) and modern bathroom with great shower.
Cosy bar with welcome nibbles before Dinner set the tone.
Traditional dining room but great menu and first class (modern) cooking.
All the staff were great without exception.
Comfortable night with a red squirrel waiting on our terrace when I opened the curtains.
Breakfast was also of a high standard.
Two minor niggles but nothing that would stop us going back.
Hot water was in short supply in the evening-I should have mentioned this to the staff.
No problem in the morning.
Wi-Fi reception not great, this would easily be resolved with boosters.

We stayed as a family group – gathering eight of us in total, from 22 to 86 years old – at Overwater Hall from Friday night through to Monday morning. None of us wanted to leave! A perfect break, tucked away amongst the trees out of the wind in stunning surroundings, looked after with careful attention to every detail by Angela, Stephen, Luke and the other excellent staff. Polite friendliness is a difficult balance to achieve, but the Overwater Hall team succeed superbly. Not once did anyone hover, yet there was always miraculously someone on hand to provide our every need.
From the classic elegance of the rooms – all different, all with character, comfort and views of the Lakeland scenery, some like our bedroom (Room 2) with separate seating alcoves looking out over the hills, and spacious bathrooms – through the garden walks, back to tea in the lounge and superb cuisine in the evening, it was faultless. Red squirrels raid the hazelnut boxes strategically placed outside the lounge windows and front door, and deer can be glimpsed in the garden copses. Early morning walks down to nearby Overwater Lake, or over the fields, raised the appetite to ensure full enjoyment of the excellent, locally sourced breakfast, then more exercise during the day justified the beautifully presented evening meals in the elegant dining room, the menus at each meal having just the right level of choice. Truly a gem of a discovery, and we can’t wait to have an opportunity to return. We cannot recommend this hotel more highly.
In the visitors’ book we were genuinely able to write “Simply perfect”.
