“Worth it for the view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

It was bitterly cold when we were looking around, but the fort is very large and well worth a look just for the view down the valley.

“Very scenic/atmospheric”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Drove westward over hardknott pass (mainly in first gear going up and taking it slow coming down). The fort is in a great location - and a short walk from a small car park which is often full apparently (though people don't spend long there generally). Be careful in picking a path to walk over to the fort as alot of it is alpine seepage and can be very boggy/muddy.

“worth the steep walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

Park at the foot of hardknott and walk to the fort for simply stunning panoramic views, marvel at the romans fortitude in building a fort here and the effort it would have taken. Lots of sheltered walls to sit behind if a wind is blowing cold and lovely place to picnic. Also fascinating watching drivers on hardknott pass- locals who don't blink an eye and visitors who are white faced as they inch very slowly down the steep pass. Its a very steep walk to the fort but well worth the effort.

“Well worth the effort!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

We walked from the Woolpack Inn and nearly gave up before we reached the fort - it was hard going for us softies. Glad we didn't as the site is very atmospheric and has spectacular views all along the valley. Excellent location for a quick lesson on geology/geography as you can clearly see the path of the ice as it cut out the landscape.

“nice surprise”

a nice surprise to find this roman fort's remains after travelling the unique roads to it. Wonder how the Romans managed.
