“Lovely large house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

A great sized property to rent for a big group of family and friends. We've just had our second trip there and it was stunning (again). The house is warm and welcoming with its open fires (logs a plenty) and backed up by central heating.
We could some and go as we wished and there was no worry about noise pollution as we were away from anybody. No street lights mean you can see the stars in the sky and looked beautiful. The kids were entranced and the same could be said of the adults.
Close by are walks to waterfalls and a small train station (not working through the winter months). A couple of local pubs both of which serve scrumptious food which you might need after the walking

My husband and I stayed at Stanley House for two nights over the half term holiday with our two little dogs. The log fires (which are lit at around 6/7am each day) were welcoming and cosy! The staff were all fantastic, very friendly and helpful. The open house policy meant we could please ourselves and the well stocked larder enabled my never-full husband to satisfy his stomach as and when he needed to! The room we stayed in was a little cramped in comparison to some of the other rooms, however the bathroom was of a decent size. The drying room was large but cold so didn't actually dry any of our clothes/ boots. Breakfast was lovely and the lady was pleasant and more than happy to accomadate any requests for items not on the menu. The breakfast room curtains really need replacing though as they do not go with the decor at all!

The Woolpack is 5mins down the road and seriously has the best pizza in the WORLD!!! We enjoyed two fantastic meals there in the surprisingly modern and extremely popular bar area. There are games and a pool table etc as well as a large screen tv, so a whole afternoon into evening can easily slip by.

Special mention to Donna, a lovely lady who works at the Woolpack- we went walking in the awful weather near the hard knot pass and got lost- it took us hours to find our way back to the road and my freezing cold little dog gave up in exhaustion and had to be carried :( We rang the Woolpack to see if someone could possibly pick us up and help get us to a vet. Donna quickly came to our rescue and helped us get back safely. Many, many thanks! My dog is now fine and back to his usual barking mad self! X

We will definitely be visiting again.

Fantastic location, great staff but possibly the worst shower I've ever had the mis-fortune to use! Barely a dribble and cold - not good! Very narrow single beds but otherwise comfortable, excellent size kitchen/dining room thought he stale bread provided in the open larder was inedible! Overall decor could do with updating/cleaning but the location and friendly staff made up for this!

We apologise that you found fault with your stay, but we are a little confused. The whole House was let on a self catering basis for your brothers wedding, and on departure the comments from fellow guests were excellent.
As a result of the water issue, we are investigating the problem, and partly as a result we are this winter changing the hot water for the top floor, as the pressure doesn't seem to be adequate.
All our single beds are standard 3ft wide, and when "zip and linked" together create a super king size bed.
We take pride in our appearance, and all comments are welcome, and help us to keep on top of things.

Booked to stay two nights at Stanley House on the Drink, Dine and Doze break. On arrival at Stanlet House shown to our room by Tom, very helpful young man, but the overall decor of the House needs some TLC. Chipped paint on the stairs and in some places electric cables appear out of the walls with tape over them! TV did not work due to a known cable fault so moved to a room across the hall .. which had a hole in between the floor boards covered by carpet !. Roon was cluttered and very hot . Dinner was in the Woolpack which is a 35 minute walk from the Stanley House and each night we were given a return ride to the Houes in an old van, could have been in an ex ARMY 2/3 ton truck! On the second night we had a horrendous starter, meat platter, chicken wings and pork ribs. All the meat was white/grey in colour , very bland and looked as if the meat had been microwaved or boiled. no colour..not grilled. and crispy... worst wings n ribs ever. Left most of the starter and even though we told the waitress the meal was not good, she didnt respond. Otherwise the food was acceptable but not outstanding considering they advertise local produce etc. Highlight of the day was the breakfast cooked by Heidi, which was very good. Our room was not serviced. at all...'due to the room change' .. was the reason given. But Tom told us he'd specifically asked for it to be done .
Eskdale is beautiful and we enjoyed the walking but Stanley House was very expensive for the quality of accommodation

Room Tip: looks great on the web site, friendly folk, but not all it seems. Rooms to the rear of the house are...

A really great place to unwind and relax. The staff are really friendly, feels like being in your own home. When we arrived, although no one at reception we read the notice to use the phone and within 5 mins we were in our lovely room.
The breakfast is fantastic (especially the "Hearty Lakeland Breakfast") there were various others to try . As much tea, coffee and juice that you could ask for. The rooms are really nice, clean and the en suite bathroom is what anyone could ask for after a day's walking -to soak in a warm tub.
We like the informality and trust. The open larder is great for snacks. There are two living rooms great for reading and relaxing in front of an open fire (the wood is there for you to build your fire) with a book. We will recommend this place to friends and family.

Stanley House is a charming, quiet inn with a garden that follows the contours of the river Esk. The rooms are lovely. Mine was small, but well equipped with good linens. There is complimentary wi-fi. They offer a very good breakfast, as well as space for preparing snacks or storing one's own food. I was there during a heat wave and my only complaint was that only one very small window in my room opened. All the others were sealed shut. Hosts offer a shuttle up valley to their Woolpack Inn for a good pub meal.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the lawns and river.

What a special place! We stayed over the Jubilee weekend in the family suite with our two 8 year old sons. The rooms were large and clean and the beds super comfy! The house is well set out with plenty of general seating and a fantastic kitchen/eating area where guests can bring their own food to make snacks or take essentials from the open larder. A lovely friendly and relaxed atmosphere complimented by the fantastic manager, Tony, who makes the place. From driving the nightly shuttle bus (old army lorry) to and from the local pub to sorting out guest queries or taking breakfast orders he couln't have been more helpful. A very memorable stay and we will come again for sure.
