“Nice place to spend two nights”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013 via mobile

What a very nice, small, clean hotel. The staff were excellent, lots of ideas of what to do and where to go. Lovely rooms, very warm. I agree with others that the minuscule television was out of place , for a small outlay a much more appropriate one could have been purchased and also the placing of the " no smoking" notices, these ,in my opinion, shouldn't be "stuck" on the wall but put on the room door. Food was good value and well presented and tasty. Very clean bathroom, the shower( no bath in the Lune room) needs a pump to increase the pressure so that you don't have to run round the cubicle to get wet ! I would be happy to recommend this hotel to people who want to get away fr the impersonal chain hotels

Just returned from staying the weekend at Uplands. I booked this with a Voucher for a 2 night stay and when i booked it i understood there would be a £40 supplement for a Saturday night which i thought was quite expensive but understood they wouldnt want you using discount vouchers for a saturday when they could let rooms for full price.
To say i was annoyed when checking out this morning was an understatement whilst i was more than happy to pay the £40 if the place was full i didnt think it reasonable to go ahead with the charge when they had vacancies all weekend as i wasnt stopping a fully paying guest by having my room.
When i rasied the fact that they hadnt being full and if they had been i would be more than happy to pay and would they still expect me to pay the supplement he just said yes they would. there was no discussion or that he would ask the manager if they could waiver the charge as hotel had rooms to let all weekend or anything.
This was a disapointment to me as twice over the weekend i had to ask for the heating to be put on as the window in our room didnt shut completely and was very drafty on a very cold weekend. the man i saw at check out knew this as i had asked him to try shut it for us and whilst he did his best there is an issue with the window which makes the room very cold.
The dining room was also very cold i would say its an issue through all the hotel.
The bedroom had a very small TV in and i wouldnt have liked to spend a lot of time in the room, whilst it was clean the room did need some updating, including the shower.
When we arrived our first impression wasnt good as outside the door there was tubs with dead plants etc in and the whole place looked like it needed a good clean before you actually got in the building
On a positive note the breakfast both days was good and we had evening meal in the hotel on Saturday which was also very good
Cant say i would be in a rush to return here again

The Uplands Hotel is a great little gem. The rooms are very nice. The hotel is in a lovely setting. The staff at the hotel are very welcoming, accommodating and helpful. The food is very nice - especially the sticky toffee pudding. We liked it so much that we have booked again. I would definitely recommend going into Cartmel itself, lots of little quirky shops (great sticky toffee pudding and cheese). Grange-over-Sands is lovely too - you must visit Higginson's Butchers - fantastic pies! You can have a nice walk along the promenade too.

As per title, hotel is a nice hotel, food very good. Only drawback is the tv kept losing signal and was difficult to swap channels. When I visited I was the only guest, so a bit boring in the bar/restaurant.

My partner and I wanted a quiet couple of days in the countryside and this was just what we were looking for. We took a short (and cheap) cab ride to the hotel from the station and were warmly greeted by the very friendly hotel manager. We had booked a room overlooking the water (so needless to say the views were stunning) which was equipped with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits - as well as a hair-dryer (very important in this cold, wet weather!) The only slight disappointments were that all the rooms were fitted with showers rather than bathtubs, the TV was very small, and the bathroom was a bit dated, but none of those things really mattered in the end.

A 15 minute walk along the winding country roads gets you to the beautiful village of Cartmel with its Michelin starred restaurant, bistros and pretty pubs. A 25 minute walk takes you to the slightly larger village of Grange-over-Sands, which has a number of shops and a nice bakery that does awesome pies! Or, if you don't fancy the walk, a cab will cost a couple of quid.

There really is an abundance of good food places in Cartmel (I've heard the Pig and Whistle is excellent - a gastro pub run by Mr Rogan, owner of Cartmel's famous L'Enclume restaurant) Most places were quiet on the Thursday evening, but Friday night we struggled to find a free table anywhere, so best to book in advance. If you do decide to dine at the hotel though, their live-in chef does a great roast - not to mention delicious chunky chips. Breakfast was just as good and we had a selection of fruit, yoghurt, cereal and toast as well as our choice of cooked breakfast.

All in all, a great stay! Highly recommended for anyone who wants to just relax for a couple of days, do some walking and take in the fresh air.
