“A Great Little Gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

The Uplands Hotel is a great little gem. The rooms are very nice. The hotel is in a lovely setting. The staff at the hotel are very welcoming, accommodating and helpful. The food is very nice - especially the sticky toffee pudding. We liked it so much that we have booked again. I would definitely recommend going into Cartmel itself, lots of little quirky shops (great sticky toffee pudding and cheese). Grange-over-Sands is lovely too - you must visit Higginson's Butchers - fantastic pies! You can have a nice walk along the promenade too.

As per title, hotel is a nice hotel, food very good. Only drawback is the tv kept losing signal and was difficult to swap channels. When I visited I was the only guest, so a bit boring in the bar/restaurant.

My partner and I wanted a quiet couple of days in the countryside and this was just what we were looking for. We took a short (and cheap) cab ride to the hotel from the station and were warmly greeted by the very friendly hotel manager. We had booked a room overlooking the water (so needless to say the views were stunning) which was equipped with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits - as well as a hair-dryer (very important in this cold, wet weather!) The only slight disappointments were that all the rooms were fitted with showers rather than bathtubs, the TV was very small, and the bathroom was a bit dated, but none of those things really mattered in the end.

A 15 minute walk along the winding country roads gets you to the beautiful village of Cartmel with its Michelin starred restaurant, bistros and pretty pubs. A 25 minute walk takes you to the slightly larger village of Grange-over-Sands, which has a number of shops and a nice bakery that does awesome pies! Or, if you don't fancy the walk, a cab will cost a couple of quid.

There really is an abundance of good food places in Cartmel (I've heard the Pig and Whistle is excellent - a gastro pub run by Mr Rogan, owner of Cartmel's famous L'Enclume restaurant) Most places were quiet on the Thursday evening, but Friday night we struggled to find a free table anywhere, so best to book in advance. If you do decide to dine at the hotel though, their live-in chef does a great roast - not to mention delicious chunky chips. Breakfast was just as good and we had a selection of fruit, yoghurt, cereal and toast as well as our choice of cooked breakfast.

All in all, a great stay! Highly recommended for anyone who wants to just relax for a couple of days, do some walking and take in the fresh air.

Excellent small local family run hotel. The staff are friendly, efficient and super helpful. It's great value for money and I've already booked my 3 trip back! Expect I will be visiting many many times in the future.

Very comfortable 2 night stay. The room we stayed in was very comfortable with a glorious view. Only complaint is the shower which doesn't have much power however they are planning to upgrade the rooms shortly. This is a very minor complaint as the bed was comfortable and the rooms were clean and toasty warm. The public areas are very nice.
The breakfasts were fantastic and top ups of toast, tea and coffee were freely available you just had to ask the attentive staff. The location was gorgeous just a 10 minute walk outside the picturesque village of Cartmel. It would be advisable to bring a torch however as the walk down and back can be a bit dark in the winter months. .
The hotel staff were exceptional, friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely return to Uplands.

We stayed on a recent freezing cold Friday night on a cheap deal. Our room was warm and cosy and clean with a massive comfy bed and a wonderful view of the sun setting over the water. We went for the Carvery in the restaurant which was very tasty and reasonably priced, although the cabbage was a bit undercooked for me! The sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie were both excellent. We ventured in to Cartmel centre (a short drive away) and had a drink in 2 very nice friendly pubs. Food was being served in both, and it looked good. We awoke to brilliant sunshine and again the lovely view. We enjoyed a well cooked English breakfast and left for a tour of nearby Coniston and Windermere before returning home to Yorkshire. A lovely break and hope to return.

Room Tip: we stayed in 'Leven' - they all had names.
