“Michelin stars food, average room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

We got this package as a wedding gift.

We got a room right above L'Enclume. It's big but funny enough the room was not flat, you do feel walking up and down the floor board. The bathroom was big - a bit too big. Shampoo and soap were provided but didn't smell too attractive so bring your own. :)

There's no parking so you have to find your own, and if you arrived on a weekend you will need some luck to find parkings - best is to arrive sunset when the tourists are gone.

Service was good at L'Enclume - very attentive, detail oriented. Do arrive with an empty stomach.

For the package we got the second night meal at the other restaurant. It was a very long dinner. The problem seems to be that only one girl was allowed to take orders (?) and she was absolutely slumped with everything (bring out the wine, serve the food, take the order, etc etc) while the other two seems to just filling your water glass. It was very odd. Food was good though - really fresh.

Breakfast was okay - I found the smoked mackerel very salty - maybe that's just the way it is.

Room Tip: I think if you get a room at the main building (where reception is) you will get better rooms...The...

We selected room 12 - it was comfortable and charming but not wow. An extremely noisy fridge kept us awake (along with the noise from reception downstairs in the morning), in addition there were a couple of broken light fittings and the bathroom door didn't shut. Niggles, but not what you'd expect at the price. Breakfast at Rogan and Co was excellent one day but a let down and over cooked the other.

The lack of parking was a frustration when we first arrived but if you wait until a little later in the day then parking spaces do open up near the priory just outside L'enclume House.

The service and welcome was fantastic though and L'enclume restaurant is phenomenal. Cartmel is a lovely place to be - we'd recommend Unsworth Yard (just round the corner) which has a lovely cheese shop and wine shop.

We stayed here as a part of a gourmet deal. The staff are very polite, our room was a decent size and clean. Overall, I would recommend. We were situated in room 4 near the main restaurant.
The only minor niggles during our stay was the lack of parking, creaky floorboards from the room above, and uninspiring choice of cereals, however the exceptional black pudding makes up for this.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay at L'Enclume recently, room 2 was clean, comfortable, and full of that cottage charm with exposed beams and wonky ceilings. Bottled water, tea, coffee and homemade biscuits were replenished daily.
We stayed in one of the smaller rooms, which was easily big enough for the two of us, however, room 2 is situated right above l'Enclume restaurant and is really very noisy during dinner service. This didn't bother us so much as we had brought earplugs, but just be aware that the hum / chatter of the dining room easily went on til 1am and then the staff had to clean up / lock up. If you want absolute peace and quiet, perhaps head for one of the rooms in one of their other buildings around the village.

Room Tip: Before of the noise of l'Enclume dining room if you are staying in that building...

If you're after frills and room service this isn't the place for you, but if you want somewhere comfortable and stylish to stay then this could be the place. We stayed for two nights in the Bradshaw which is next to reception in L'enclume house (next door to Rogan and Co). Facilities included wetroom-style bathroom, tea and coffee facilities (cafetiere) with fresh milk and home made chocolate chip cookies, luxury toiletries, tv and a lovely comfy bed. It was a lovely big room with a feature fireplace and stone floor (heated!). The only teeny niggle I had was that there was very little soundproofing in the building, you could hear people speak in reception and upstairs creaked loudly when they moved around, but as this isn't the kind of place where kids are going to be running around it wasn't really a problem. Breakfast was next door at Rogan and Co which was very nice, but could have perhaps been a little more generous - everything came in very modest portions. There are no parking restrictions in Cartmel so we managed to park outside the door one night. The rooms were 2 minutes walk from the L'enclume restaurant. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I'd stay there again.

Room Tip: The Bradshaw next to reception in L'enclume house was spacious with a great bathroom

What an experience!!! We were celebrating my husband's 74th Birthday and decided to stay overnight and enjoy their 17 course meal. The best decision I have ever made.

Our room was in L'Enclume house and was extremely roomy - the bathroom was luxurious. If you want frills, velvet bows and fringes then this is not the hotel for you. The decor is extremely understated - yet stylish.

We walked the short distance to the restaurant at 7.00pm and we were greeted like long lost friends (I had popped my head in during the afternoon to get instructions on where to park). The staff are friendly yet extremely professional. Watching the waiters work was like watching a very well choreographed ballet, they never missed a step.

The menu was imaginative to say the least. As each dish is presented you are given an explanation of what is on your every changing plates - which is extremely helpful and is backed up with the menu which is left on your table throughout the meal.

You almost have to develop a 6th sense to enjoy all the sights and flavours at L'Enclume - as you will experience tastes you have never had before and the presentation really challenges your concept of what food should look like. But you will not be disappointed - challenged yes, but not disappointed.

The decor, like the hotel, is understated. Not stuffy at all and by 9.00 pm there was a real buzz in the restaurant, so you did not feel you had to speak in whispers.

We were sat at a well placed table, as I mentioned my husband was hard of hearing, which allowed us a full view of the restaurant. Each table was having the 17 course menu and it was fascinating to watch how plates arrived, empty ones vanished and glasses were never allowed to be empty on every table. The staff worked extremely hard but they never once looked under stress and their customers were obviously enjoying themselves and much as we were.

We reluctantly tasted our last dessert and our last sip of wine at 10.45 pm and the perfect evening ended with my husband saying "That was the best meal I have ever had in my life" and as he "Lives to Eat" rather than "Eats to Live" it was a huge statement.

Visiting L'Enclume is a memory you will never forget.

My husband and I stayed for two nights at L'Enclume on a package that included dinner at L'Enclume one night and dinner at Rogan the other. Please see my separate restaurant reviews. This is for the room and breakfast only.

We stayed in Room 4 which is described on the website as being: "A spacious well appointed room benefiting from a lounge area with bath and shower."

My description would be:
- A small room with cheap furniture.
- Two small chairs and a table in the corner doesn't consitute a lounge area.
- A bathroom with lino on the floor and a bath with a feeble shower over it and a shower curtain that sticks to your body when in use (yuk!).

We were really disappointed and wish we had chosen to still eat at L'Enclume but picked somewhere else in the village to stay.

Breakfast was lovely, served in L'Enclume restaurant, with Ann Foreshaw yoghurt (to die for) and excellent English breakfast. This didn't make up for the room, however.

Room Tip: Don't choose Room 4 and web site descriptions are quite misleading.
