“Nice staff, great chips, excellent for people watching!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

Following an 8 mile circular walk around Cartmel, we arrived mid afternoon for a well deserved pint. After a nice cold lager my wife had got the munchies and fancied some chips - but only if hand cut.

The bar staff were very friendly. I asked for a menu and sure enough, hand cut chips were there so I ordered two bowls that arrived on wood platters with salt and vinegar. We were offered sauces which were delivered promptly. They were perfect....crispy on the outside and soft potato in the middle.

Washed down by a couple more drinks, whilst watching the world go by on a sunny afternoon in Cartmel. Happy days.

“quick visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

we were visiting from Bowness, and had never been to Cartmel previously. we went into the Kings Arms to order just 2 coffees, and the chap behind the bar was quite friendly and attentive. he brought the coffees outside about 5 mins later.. I went back in to ask for the menus which he said he would bring out to us.. this only took a couple of minutes.. we did not actually eat here but the food we saw being serviced looked really nice, and the pleasant surroundings did enhance the 'coffees.' Def would go back here to eat, due to pleasant location and smiling staff !

“Nice pub for a drink although mixed experience with food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

Nice pub for a drink although if you do not like Bass draught or the Hawkshead brews then you may prefer to venture elsewhere... Fortunately I quite enjoy Hawkshead so no problem there. Beer tends to be reasonably well looked after although is served colder than usual (by design?) which is detrimental to the taste however still pleasantly drinkable so I do not wish to complain too much!

At the last visit as a group of three plus baby and dog we were welcomed quickly and sat down near the fire, perhaps unnecessarily given the weather. Service wasn't as prompt as I have come to expect from other pubs in the area however staff at the bar were happy to serve us in the absence of true table service. All three ordered sandwiches off the lunchtime menu with a portion of chips. Whilst I have no complaints about the food itself, others in the party were not too impressed as it transpired that one of the smoked salmon sandwiches contained only the tough parts which proved impossible to eat. The extra chips also took 10mins longer than the food to arrive by which time we had all finished our sandwiches.

Whilst the drink was reasonably priced (a shade over the £3 a pint mark) I felt the food was over priced given that the service we received did not justify it. We will be visiting again but perhaps only for a quiet drink, which is perhaps what the Kings is best at.

“Friendly restaurant with excellent food.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013 via mobile

The friendly staff at the Kings Arms accommodated a party of 5 plus one well behaved dog without a blink of the eye. The food was delicious and a varied selection on offer. Very relaxed and a friendly atmosphere will certainly visit again.

“A Lovely Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

A miserable Wednesday evening and our planned meal had to be cancelled owing to a misunderstanding over what was on offer. So there we were at 7 pm in Cartmel wondering where to go. We tried the King's Arms, thinking that the £20 for 2 would probably provide basic food and not really expecting anything special. That assumed we could get a seat. Inside the place was buzzing and obviously popular. We were told, at first, that we would have to wait 30-45 minutes which we were prepared to do but then the Manager spotted a table with a 'reserved' sign. He said it had been booked for 7 pm and since it was now approaching 7.15 pm declared that it was now our table.

My wife opted for a traditional prawn starter and then fish (it was Hake) and chips. I had Duck Pate followed by Steak and Ale pie with boiled potatoes and vegetables. All I can say that for the price the quality was way above what we expected. The Hake was cooked to perfection and the meat in the pie was tender, lean and accompanied by a beautiful sauce. Portion sizes were just right. Service was efficient, quick and friendly. The whole operation was run with style.

We tend to judge a place initially by the kind of clientele present. Whilst all age groups and types of people were represented there were plenty of middle aged and older people there; that usually means good value and quality with no silly and expensive frills. The older end tend not to fall for pretence masquerading as sophistication. Especially if they are working class. This certainly applied to the Kings Arms and its clientele.

They deserved, and got, a decent tip.
