“Graceful old church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Gives the visitor a sense of history and also of a living church with much going on as part of the community. Stained glass, stone and wood make it a building to be treasured.

“Great architecture and a real used church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

Wonderful old church, strong architecture, high and gracious.
Nice to see it so well looked after by the people around. Also the first automated credit card machine for your offering to the maintenance that I have seen. Allows you to give gift aid. Well done to whomever set that up.

“Historic Cartmel Priory”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

This medieval church dating from the 1100's survived the dissolution of the Monasteries and is thus a living example of medieval worship and architecture. We particularly enjoyed reading all the inscriptions on the tombstones within the church -- some dating to the 1600's and still clearly readable.
What was surprising was that on some of the tombstones from the 1700's, there was a Skull and Crossed Leg bones symbol -- and an 'hourglass' symbol which, if laying horizontally on its side, meant that the person had died an untimely death.
The volunteer staff were extremely friendly and very helpful.

The volunteers were helpful and knowlegeable, and the "sales area" had an excellent selection of cards.

“Peaceful place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

A nice peaceful place to visit. Seemed to have a lot of things going on. Bookshop and lots of details of the history of the priory throughout the ages.
