I live local and have been to Beswicks a number of times but resigned my regular support a good number of years ago when I felt enough was enough. The consistent problem seems to be the owner (David) trying to do all the waiting and front of house service himself and this can lead to poor or even very poor service. On that last occasion, the owner brought the dirty plates from someone else's table and put them down on our table whilst he served our food. I didn't feel that was right at all.
I decided to go again last weekend, trusting that things might have changed...and probably I was hoping to feel it had perhaps been my loss for staying away for so long. It was like going back in time, same place, same menu, same decor, same David (but older), same fundamental problem. Disappointingly I had to stand for a good 10 minutes before anyone appeared to provide any form of welcome. Unfortunately to make things worse, the owner then served someone else who had arrived after me first, and they hadn't even booked...which just rubbed in how little attention was being paid to getting the welcome right.
Trying to be objective, I would say that Beswicks is definitely worth a try if you are in the area and want a pleasant atmosphere and enjoyable food and don't mind paying a bit over the odds, but it falls disappointingly short of being what it is trying to be and it would definitely be eclipsed in areas where there is stronger competition...its greatest downfall is, as I've mentioned, the owner spreading himself far to thinly. Fix that and it would make a world of difference.
