“It's a ruined castle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

Yup! It's a ruined castle-lots of room to run around and some bits you can still climb /jump on. It is a lovely setting, but the M6 is rumbling by. My daughter was pleased they sold ice cream. It would be a good place for a picnic. Small exhibition inside visitor centre is quite good too.

“Good Info signs. Well kept”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

Liked seeing it. Info signs in several areas of castle helped explain the history and how it would have looked if complete. Stairway to top of the Keep was closed. Would have liked to be able to climb and take pictures from that view.

“"Lovely Setting"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

What a setting on teh banks of the river. This place would have been magic when in its full glory. Also In great condition for a ruin. A must if your calling through the area or castle hunting.

“Splendid ruin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

Sitting in sheep pasture by an attractive river, this mellow-stoned ruin within sight of the M6 dates from the 1300s, with a Roman site nearby. Strategically important in the disputes between England and Scotland that rumbled on for centuries.
English Heritage doesn't do roofs and this has only one minor exception that is the oratory, the highest point that you can get to three floors up. This room, used for the family's devotions has an ornate seven-ribbed roof. Getting to see it up a narrow uneven spiral staircase is hard work (and harder on the way down!) but worth it.
As you are walking around the site on your own, a guide book is necessary fleshing out the various stages of growth and decay that it has gone through.

“Brougham Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

This is a castle, just outside the main entrance for Whinfell Centre Parcs

Admission is £4 for adults, and we really enjoyed looking round. There are steps that take you to the top where you can see views all around and see carved letters in the wall and ceiling.

Really worth a visit if your passing.
