Stayed a couple of nights on a walking break and had a really relaxed weekend. The owners are extremley welcoming, and always on hand to help. Lovely big bathroom, comfy bed, and very comfy chairs in the reception rooms, just what we needed after wearing ourselves out in the hills.

We only dined at the hotel on the second evening as we arrived very late the first night, but the dinner was really excellent. Lovely fresh food, imaginative but not overly rich. Very good choice and standard of breakfast too.

All in all, highly recommended.

The hotel is set perfectly off the road from keswick to grange with lovely gardens to the front and sides. Roy and Janice were the perfect hosts and always available for a few words without being intrusive. Pay that little bit extra and have one of the two double aspect rooms at the front of the hotel, they are both huge and offer fantastic views of Cat Bells and Maiden Moor. Food is well above average with four excellent courses plus coffee/tea and breakfast outstanding, my partner particularly enjoyed the option of mixed fruits/berries with yoghurt.

“Enjoyed our stay”

We stayed at Leathes Head for just the one night. The hotel is well situated in beautiful Borrowdale with many, almost too many walks to choose from in the area.
The house is prettily situated in leafy gardens with lovely views of the hills including Cat Bells, though the day we arrived it was too rainy for our planned ascent.
Roy and Janice are clearly very hands-on proprietors and put a lot of energy into creating the best stay for their guests. The rooms and public areas were a little lacking in character for our taste - too much "antique" pine furniture, stock prints etc. though, as my wife pointed out to me, this might be an question of the tastes of different age groups. Our room however was spacious and comfortable and the ensuite was large with bath and shower over with lashings of hot water (Fit double ended baths Roy, make the rooms a little more elegant/romantic and you could halve your heating costs!).
Dinner, included in the £72.95 per person single night rate, comprised four very good courses efficiently and courteously served, the only gripe being the serving of an inferior 2004 Chablis instead of the selected 2002 gold medal-winning vintage selected from the extensive winelist. Presenting the wine before opening it at the table would resolve this sort of error.
Despite this, a pleasant enough stay with good food.

This is the third time that my wife and I have stayed at the Leathes head and we enjoyed another nice break.

It combines comfortable surroundings with pleasant and friendly service. The location of the hotel is also excellent. Just far enough outside Keswick to be rural but within easy reach - either by car, by bus (ever 30 minutes stopping right at the end of the hotel drive), or by a short 10 minute walk to Lodore and catching the lake launch. It is also exceptionall well placed for walkers of all abilities and stamina. The view of Catbells from the lounge are also breathtaking

Roy and Jan are excellent and friendly hosts and full of local information and advice. They are also very accomodating with any particular needs you have.

After 4 years or so the decoration is perhaps looking a little tired and this time the food perhaps wasn't the same extremely high standard. But when you have achieved so well in the past it is easy to slip from being excellent to being very good.

However, I am splitting hairs and we have always enjoyed a good time when ever we have been. We will be returning in the future.

This is a very pleasant hotel but was ever so slightly "close but no cigar" or possibly "close and most of a cigar but not quite all".

Must say first that our host was great, really helpful but the food was just a bit uninspiring. The public areas are beautifully furnished, so our room was a bit of a disappointment, the furnishings were rather bland and modern. Also, the hairdryer didn't work. Shower had plenty of pressure - just the thing at teh end of a long day walking, especially as there wasn't a bath in our room.

But don't let these minor points put you off. The pluses hugely outweigh the negatives and the location and view from the garden are just gorgeous
