We stayed at Leathes Head for just the one night. The hotel is well situated in beautiful Borrowdale with many, almost too many walks to choose from in the area.
The house is prettily situated in leafy gardens with lovely views of the hills including Cat Bells, though the day we arrived it was too rainy for our planned ascent.
Roy and Janice are clearly very hands-on proprietors and put a lot of energy into creating the best stay for their guests. The rooms and public areas were a little lacking in character for our taste - too much "antique" pine furniture, stock prints etc. though, as my wife pointed out to me, this might be an question of the tastes of different age groups. Our room however was spacious and comfortable and the ensuite was large with bath and shower over with lashings of hot water (Fit double ended baths Roy, make the rooms a little more elegant/romantic and you could halve your heating costs!).
Dinner, included in the £72.95 per person single night rate, comprised four very good courses efficiently and courteously served, the only gripe being the serving of an inferior 2004 Chablis instead of the selected 2002 gold medal-winning vintage selected from the extensive winelist. Presenting the wine before opening it at the table would resolve this sort of error.
Despite this, a pleasant enough stay with good food.
