“Fantastic food, comfortable room, relaxed atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2011

Wedding Anniversary: We went walking in the Lakes during our week off and decided to take an overnight bag and just stop off at a hotel on the way home. We saw the sign for the Leathes Hotel and stopped to see if there was a room free (mid week). There was as they had just re-opened on 8 March after decorating over the Winter (they were full all weekend). The Manager showed us two rooms to choose from - both excellent and freshly decorated. The 4 course evening dinner was amazing and as I am gluten free this was not a problem at all for the chef. The breakfast was excellent too. A lovely bar and comfortable lounge with a roaring fire, very relaxing indeed. To see to two woodpeckers outside the window while eating breakfast was lovely too. Beautiful, relaxed hotel, friendly staff. Would definitely recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: Just down the road in the car to Derwentwater Lake

The Leathes Head is under new management. The new manager and staff are keeping up the excellent standards set by Roy and Janice. David Jackson the hotel's very talented chef is still there and the menu has in fact expanded.

We stayed in the superior room which was recently redecorated with ensuite modern bathroom and large bath. We had a nice view from the room towards Cat Bells and surrounding fells. It is a good location for various hikes in Borrowdale valley. There is a lovely garden where we saw a red squirel feeding on bird's food! The couple that manage the hotel is friendly, nice and very efficient for their age. The breakfast menu has around 7 meals to choose from and is delicious. The dinner is 4 course meal with a selection from 3 dishes for each course. Vegeterian options are guaranteed. Bottle of wine is prices reasonably starting around £15. Highly recommended.

We stayed at The Leathes Head in February for a one night wedding aniversary stay. It was like staying in a private country house. The welcome was great with complimentary tea and cake in front of a real fire.
Fellow guests were chatty and it gave the hotel a real homely atmosphere. The food is very good, The only downside to the hotel, in my opinion, was the mattress on the bed. Both of us slept really badly and that let down the weekend. I wish that we had upgraded to a king sized bed as I think that would of suited us better.

In our previous visits to the Lakes we kept searching for that somewhere special & then we stumbled upon the Leathes head.

Since then we have sampled the Leathes head many times over the years, which feels far from the madding crowd but close enough to partake in local activities, if we want to.

The service, comfort, food & relaxed atmosphere never changes. A little jem of a place where I wish I could stay every month!

Whenever we are stressed or just in need of a break we book a few nights for R&R & we have always come away feeling relaxed & revived.

Looking forward to our next stay, which will be soon, I hope..

We needed to discover a good hotel, somewhere in Cumbria, and suitable for a partially disabled person, as we were on route from Wiltshire to Arran and Islay for a ten day holiday. The internet and Trip Advisor came up with Leathes Head, and what a find that was!
Our downstairs room was fitted with everything you could ever want, and was extremely comfortable. The owners were most attentive and professional. The chef was turning out excellent food, and it seemed a pity that we were only staying for two nights !
We have no hesitation, whatever, in recommending the Leathes Head Hotel in the delightful Borrowdale valley (south of Keswick), for either a stopover or, better, a longer restful stay. We shall be back ! Thank you!
