“Nice break ending in disappointment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2009

Booked 3 night family break (Helvellyn - DBB, means breakfast and dinner included), 2 adults and 2 children (13 and 11) on the hotel's website. Confirmed back by email, £738.00.
We enjoyed our stay, nice, comfortable room, helpful staff, nice restaurant. But that is what you expect for this amount of money.
The size of the swimming pool is ridiculous, is not worth getting wet.
I had a problem understanding our final bill, and it became clear that we were charged separately for the children's dinner. When I asked for some explanation, I was told, that the deal was BB only for children. When I produced the printed booking confirmation, which was fairly comprehensive (even mentions the dress code in the restaurant), but certainly did not include this little "detail", I was told, that I should have read the small print!!!! I think this is unacceptable behaviour. There should be no small print at all (still could not find this clause, by the way) when you book a holiday, there should be no hidden charges, it should be all clear and honest about what is included and what is not.
I did not want a lenghty argument, paid by credit card, and wrote a letter to the manager. No reply, obviously.
I do not have a problem with the price, it was OK, but I think every costumer should be given all the relevant information before booking, and I certainly was misled by this hotel, even if there is an invisible "small print" on their website! Why is it not printed in the confirmation email too???
Be warned, and check everything before you go to this hotel. All the smiles and helpfulness are not sincere, they want your money only!
I certainly will avoid it in the future.

Thank for taking the time to review our hotel. I do not have a record of receiving a written complaint from you regarding the charging of children's meals, but am delighted to have the opportunity of responding via this web site.

Our terms are that children share adult rooms on a bed and breakfast basis, this way the parents are free to choose whether their children eat in the restaurant or leisure club bistro with them or maybe take advantage of our high tea facility and babysitting service, meaning that parents can then enjoy a leisurely dinner in the knowledge that their children are being cared for in their room.

I am disappointed that you felt the need to post on here in a negative fashion, especially as we did give your family a complimentary upgrade to a suite.

I do hope that you reconsider your decision not to return to our beautiful hotel.

Read a few reviews which weren't too complimentary- so a bit worried about our stay- however it was fantastic- the staff were charming- and fun- and meals great. The hotel is very clean- and views superb- but make sure you ask for a lakeview room- the rooms at the back had no view.

We initially saw this hotel on the web when we were looking for wedding venues and after speaking to them on the telephone, we went to stay and check out the amenities. The hotel is in a fantastic location. it is 3 miles from keswick and takes 45 -1 hour to walk to keswick at a leisurely pace along the side of the lake. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel or a ferry from the private jetty.
we stayed in one of the lake view rooms and it was gorgeous. The food is superb, you pay for the quality but it is well worth the price 37.50 for 3 courses plus coffee. The food is of a very high standard and there is plenty to choose from, even for soemone like myself who only really eats poultry.
If you have a drink in the bar prior to dinner the staff come and show you the evening menu in advance so that you can get an idea of what you fancy to eat and you are given canapes as a taster.
We booked our wedding for september 2010 as the setting was beautiful witht he jetty and private waterfall.
The staff couldn't be more helpfull and remembered our names and on the day we booke dthe wedding, the restaurant manager knew on that night and gave us his congratulations which made us feel welcomed and important as guests. it is these personal touches that really amde the difference to us.
The hotel was also flexible in terms of the wedding although it says in the brochure, no ceremonys after 12, they allowed us to book ours at 4pm and we are having just a buffet reception rather than the sit down meal as we have have too many different tastes to cater for. Sophie the wedding planner is excellent and is always helpful when we email her with all our questions, no matter how small a query we have an answer within 24 hours.
We can't wait to have our wedding at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone as a special treat. It may be highly priced but the service and rooms and food reflect this in the quality and you can get some good offers on the hotel web site.

This hotel is away from the main tourist hot spots, which is ideal because it's nice and quiet. But this is only OK if you have a car as it's quite away from the main tourist areas and although there is bus service between the hotel and the main areas, the travel flexibility isn't there.

The hotel is right next to a wonderful waterfalls and faces a lake. The walking around the hotel is pleasant.

There is limited car parking outside the hotel, but we managed to get a Disabled space because both children are Special Needs.

The hotel is just simply charming - nicely decorated, clean, nice spacious bedrooms. The service is also good.

The only 2 minus details are as follows...

1) We ate at the restaurant for dinner one night and I must say the food is not good value for money; the jacket potato for one of the kids was starchy as though it came out of a supermarket box, and the main meal portion was stingey. So we ate out for the remainder of the days which was better value for money with better food.

2) Many of the restaurant staff couldn't speak English very well. Don't get me wrong - foreign workers are welcome - they need the cash, but a decent level of spoken English is required. At breakfast, the staff brought out lots of toast which was unwanted - they just chuck it away if not eaten which is a horrendous waste of food. They simply couldn't understand the request for ONE slice of bread to be toasted; instead they brought out 3 slices. I think all restaurants and hotels should ask guests the amount of 'included in the price' food they actually want.

However, the staff language issue is not a big deal unless you are mega fussy like me about it, and the dinner quality and portions is not a big deal - again if you are not fussy like me and will be eating out.

But I must say I strongly recommend this hotel and would easily stay there again.

We stayed here for 7 nights on a Catbells break with our two fifteen year old sons in August, and what a great time we had. The setting is really lovely, with views of the Lake to the front of the hotel, waterfalls behind it and walks very close by.
It's classed as a 3 star hotel, but easily deserves more, especially for the restaurant and service which was comparable to 5 star hotels in Asia i have stayed in.
Check in was efficient although the lift is small, so we walked up the wide stairs. Our room was a corner room on the first floor with a double set of windows that gave lots of light. It was spacious, clean and very comfortable, although the bathroom was on the small side and the grouting was a bit discoloured.
Our sons room was on the second floor, stylishly decorated with 2 twin beds and a large bathroom with views of the watefall and the gym and hot tub.
Our package included a 4 course dinner every night-this was one of the highlights. The food is superb-i am still trying to loose the weight i put on! It is beautifully cooked and presented, the service is classy and there is a varied wine list with some excellent choices. My husband and sons loved the sticky toffee pudding, and i really enjoyed the cheese boards. There is a dress code for dinner, but this didn't seem to be too rigorously adhered to-people looked smart and our sons wore jeans and collared shirts.
There is a comfortable lounge and bar, and also a library area with fires lit at night, where you can have pre dinner drinks and canapes.
Free wifi is available- it was an added bonus that our sons could hook themselves up when they wanted to. Our room had a bit of a dodgy signal, but we did get onto the internet and people need to remember that a lot of hotels charge for this, so to have it for free was great.
This hotel had an old fashioned classy feel to it that i think is fast becoming extinct in the UK. I have read some of the more negative reviews and can only say we were very happy. It is pricey-despite our special dinner bed and breakfast deal, the whole cost of the holiday for a week was probably near to that of 2 weeks in the sun somewhere-BUT, you get what you pay for and i think nothing beats this quintessentially English experience in one of the most gloriously breathtaking parts of the world. Even our techophile sons loved the experience.
We have fallen in love with the Lakes and will be returning as often as we can. Next time i am keen to try The Inn on the Lake at Ullswater , a sister hotel to this one (where they filmed The Lakes)-we did want to do dinner there one night but our package rate did not allow us to swap which was the only dissapointment on the holiday.
It was a treat staying here.

We stayed from the 26th of August, for what turned out to be three glorious nights. The rooms are beautifully appointed, staff and service five star standard, the food was plentiful, varied and well thought out . I highly commend the Head Chef and his brigades of chefs, outstanding. The Senior management were always attentive to the finest of detail. The staff relations were exempelary.

Booked this hotel for my husband myself and another couple. Unable to book online as website did not respond. Telephoned and very helpful receptionist made booking. However a few days later was looking at hotels website and noticed there was a managers special deal which reduced the cost for four by £200!! I contacted the hotel and was firmly told it was just too bad I had booked a few days before. Despite speaking to management on arrival for our break we were again told this is hotel policy. I feel this is an awful way to treat clients but we still enjoyed our stay. We had booked standard rooms with no view which were spotless and housekeeping excellent. However at back of hotel ventilation was minimal as windows didn't open very wide. Amenities were brilliant especially the HOT TUB! Great Fun! The food was exceptional. Great choice prepared to a very high standard and served to perfection. Brilliant! The staff were lovely and very helpful. Would return to this hotel but only when special offers were available! So BEWARE - don't bood unless specal offer is indicated on website. The attitude of management on their tariff policy was diappointing and the only downside to our visit.

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review, I am delighted to read that you enjoy the food, service and facilities offered here at the Lodore.

In common with many businesses we do constantly offer special deals on the internet which vary either going up or down as the date of arrival approaches. Your tariff was a special weekend break called the "Helvellyn Break" which is a reduction on our normal dinner, bed and breakfast rate. Once a rate is agreed we do not alter that rate, either up or down. This is not an unusual policy.... have you ever tried getting a budget airline to reduce it's price once you've booked?

I am please to see that you did take advantage of our free golf offer at Keswick Golf Club and am sure that you did enjoy this added value of your break.

Once again many thanks for taking the time to review the Lodore and I very much hope to have the pleasure of your company again in the not too distant future.
