“Relaxing break with pleanty to do.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2011

I booked this hotel last minute after seeing a deal on Travel Zoo which included Pimms and Strawberries on arrival and a four course dinner on the first night. With this deal the hotel was definitely great value.

First impressions were of good service but a fairly small room and overall old fashioned feel. However, we made use of most of the hotel's facilities (indoor swimming pool, tennis court, hot tub), missing out only the gym, squash court, outdoor pool and spa and ate in the restaurant both nights and, by the end of our stay, we really didn't want to leave.

The hotel is in a beautiful position, overlooking the lake and with the river running through the beautiful gardens. It's a lovely place just to stay and relax but also very convenient for walking, and you can catch the launch to Keswick accross the road. Our room was fairy small but very comfortable, with a lovely, modern bathroom and all necessary facilities. The leisure facilities mentioned above were all well maintained and not too busy. The breakfasts offered loads of choice and were delicious and the evening meals were also fantastic. The service was generally excellent, although we did have to wait a long time for our main course on our secind night. (The waiter did apologise before we said anything!)

This hotel was delightful. We spent a week there, the views from the lakeside rooms were fantastic. The restaurant service was charming and extremely efficient. We went for the set menu each evening, and were really impressed by the quality of the food and the variety over the 6 nights. We did 2 lovely walks straight from the hotel itself, no 1 - crossing the valley to Manesty, then on up to Catbells - High Spy coming back through Grange (took us about 8 hours - in fact if I were doing that one again I'd turn to retrace my steps from High Spy, rather than descending through the rather steep slate quarry - views would have been better), however if you do make it to Grange they have a lovely tea shop there) walk no 2 was up over the ridge to Watendlath (another good tea shop) returning along by the Lodore Falls - (about 4 hours). Hotel had a lovely garden for a pre-dinner drink and an outdoor pool for chilling out.

This hotel is rightly famous for its setting, in the heart of Borrowdale. We have stayed a few times over the last 30 years and had differing experiences. The current owners are doing the place proud. The rooms have been tastefully refurbished to a high standard. The facilities are amazing - where else can you swim outdoors surrounded by mountains? The outdoor hot tub after a long walk is especially enjoyable. Best of all was the standard of the food and service, including a full vegetarian menu. We can;t wait to return ...

Room Tip: worth paying extra for a lake view, but the rooms to the back still have nice views of the crags

My partner and I stayed here for just one night in August. We had a booked a room with lake view. From the moment we stepped through the door we were in heaven. The staff were so attentive. The room was gorgeous. We had an evening meal in the restaraunt which was perfect. We didnt use the fitness centre or pool but they were very attractive. A very romantic get-away for us. We will certainly return.

Room Tip: Our room had a beautiful wiew of the Derwent Water. Would reccommend a room at the front of the hote...

We stayed here for my partners birthday weekend earlier this year along with our 2 dogs, we checked in no problem and where given an okay if a little small, dated room for the next 2 nights. Although we had to pay extra for the dogs (as is normal in most hotels, at least this one did supply us with 2 bowls each for the dogs and 2 beds/blankets for our additional money).
There was a wedding taking place on the Friday evening and will all of the movemnet our dogs would not settle, and so ordered room service. This arrived and was decent enough. At around 1am the music finally stopped and the wedding concluded, we where still awake as our small room was at the start of the main corridor and now we had to contend with the comotion of people coming up stairs. We where moved to another rooms asfter some discussion with the hotel management who's attitude was less than friendly. The lasy at the front desk was exceptional. I spoke with the hotel manager that evening who was more accomodating of my issues and resolved my dissapointment.
Shame it had to get to a meeting with the hotel manager!!

My husband and I stayed at this hotel on our 40th wedding anniversary on 13th August which was booked on the last minute. Not our first choice of hotel but all of those places were fully booked. I read the comments on Trip Adviser which were mainly favourable so went ahead and booked. My husband told the receptionist at the time of booking it was our 40th anniversary but that went over her head. On arrival we were asked what time we would like to take dinner and we booked in for 8pm. We were helped with our luggage by the porter who met us at our room as the lift was only big enough for two people. My first impressions of the room were not good - dark patterned carpet and very dated. We were at the front of the hotel and the view over Derwentwater couldn't have been better. Not sure I would feel the same if we were in a back room overlooking a flat roof. Sadly the extractor fan in the bathroom sounded like a helicopter landing and became so bad that we refrained from turning the light on where possible. However, the room was clean and the towels were very nice and appeared to be new. We went down to dinner at our alloted time and to our horror they didn't have our booking - this was supposed to be a special occasion! However, they managed to find a table for us. With hindsight we should have asked for a window table. The food and service were excellent - almost too quick. As you finished one course the next appeared almost immediately so dinner was not really a relaxed affair. The breakfast was ok but only a little fresh fruit amongst tinned fruit which was disappointing. Overall the hotel needs to be brought into the 21st century without losing traditional lakeland features. The best thing about this hotel is its' location which is wonderful.
