“Countryside location near Chester.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

Beautiful grounds with sweeping views of Cheshire greet you as you take the drive down to the hotel. The location is superb and grounds are well kept and varied. We visited for leisure and not golf. Spacious bar with balcony serves snacks, teas & coffee. Bar prices are high but in keeping with the table service provided. Can be slow when large golf parties are present but if you're not in a rush, you'll be looked after. Good quality wines available but, at up to £12 for a large glass, you'll want time to take-in the wide views while slowly consuming your drinks.
Room standard is high and very well maintained. Saturday night dinner in the restaurant was excellent (a la carte); however the service was slow - the restaurant was completely full (120 covers) and the function room was busy too. That said, we had a relaxing dinner and it was well worth the little extra wait between courses. Three courses with wine and coffee for two was £100.
We went for breakfast at peak time (room guide advises taking breakfast before 9:30) and it was very busy and consequently the table service was slow. Cooked breakfast was good and the salmon & scrambled egg very generous. Cafetiere coffee was a good medium blend.
Overall, a very enjoyable stay made good by pleasant staff. Make use of spa/pool facilities to get value for money from your stay. Take a walk into picturesque Tarporley village too.

We booked a two night stay with dinner on both evenings. Having stayed here before and noticing the commendations for food now attributed to the hotel we were keen to sample the fair on offer. On the whole we were not disappointed. The food was varied and of good quality and thoroughly enjoyable. However the service in the evening was slow even though the restaurant was not busy and the staff not very responsive to my problem with a foreign object in a starter.
The condition of the golf course was improved over our previous visit and not too busy. The pool here is lovely, bright and spacious and was not too busy when I needed to swim.
Staff at all times were pleasant and helpful so overall the trip was enjoyable but the service in the restaurant could be improved.

Room Tip: I find that the rooms are good but on neither occasion have they had a sunny aspect so appear dull e...

I stayed at the hotel as part of a group of nine and both nights we were seated late for dinner. Breakfast was just as bad, the second morning we had to leave without eating a cooked breakfast, because we had been seat one hour. We spoke to the manager and were told the kitchen was busy.

After looking around many venus in Wirral and Cheshire for our Wedding we decided on the MacDonald Portal Hotel, Golf and Spa. We could not have asked more from the venue and nothing was a problem to make our day special. After handing everything over from table plans, menus, table decorations etc on the Friday night the hotel took charge and ensured that everything was done as we wanted. Katy, the Wedding Planner at Portal was fantastic, she always had time for us and ensured that it was the best day ever. She communicated with all our outside companies that were providing additional services at our wedding e.g. chocolate fountain, florist, sweet cart etc which made things run really smoothly. On the day Adam, a further member of Portal staff was also fantastic he ensured that everything ran according to plan and nothing was ever a problem. I was treated like a princess by Portal for the whole day. All of the other Portal staff were also aware on the Friday night and Sunday that I was the bride and this was a lovely little touch to feel special all weekend. The food was fantastic, both in the day and night and our guests were amazed with the quality, appearance and quantity. The Bride and Groom bedroom was a great size for getting ready on the morning of the wedding especially when the hairdresser and make up artist all arrived. There was also a nice finishing touch of Bride and Groom dressing gowns in our room with our wedding date sewn on. The grounds at Portal are stunning and our wedding photos look great with the waterfall in the background. We had a fantastic wedding and would certainly recommend Portal as a great venue for weddings.

We booked a two day golf package here and have mixed feelings. We gave ourselves plenty of time to book in etc before our tee time. The receptionist was busy on the phone and no-one else came to us so that was a quite a wait but although we were early for booking in the receptionist did check that our rooms were ready and we could put our cases in. We still had time for a coffee but service was slow and we were the only ones there! Disappointed there was no biscuit with the drink so ordered a brownie. If you are even tempted to have one, don't. It comes from the kitchen and the guy in the bar has to fetch it himself. It wasn't the brownie I was expecting but a warm cake with ice-cream - probably my mistake - but the wait! 15mins. Coffee finished, time lost and rush to the tee.

The course we really enjoyed. Very busy and had a little wait here and there but no real problem, thoroughly enjoyable. Back to the bar for a drink and as mentioned elsewhere in reviews the prices are astronomical! Our room was lovely. Clean, fresh, bathroom spacious and clean.

Now for the evening meal, the food was fine - in fact delicious - but the service. Table not set properly, had to ask for soup spoons, condiments- in fact we ended up getting our own from another table. Breakfast was just as troublesome. No orange juice, no glasses for juice, no milk and quite a wait for them to be replenished. The breakfast itself though was delicious. All the negatives in this review (except for pricing) I think are all down to poor staff training because dining room staff seemed to be plentiful they just didn't seem to have an eye for detail.

Dear MargW_12,

Thank you for your review. Delighted that you enjoyed your golf break with us and indeed the wonderful comments about the quality of the food, the course and facilities overall.

Nice to read that you were able to check into your room early, always a bonus in particular if you are going out to play golf. I was sorry to read you expected a different brownie than those advertised in the lounge - the are home made and served with delicious Arran Dairies Ice Cream and I would encourage anyone to try them.

Quality does take time and we do take great pride in serving the highest quality food at all times, regardless if guests travel as individuals, couples or large groups or indeed if the hotel is a little or very busy - all the food will at all times be prepared fresh for both dinner and breakfast. As such guests do need to allow extra time as quality of the food served will always remain at the pinacle of our restaurant service.
There is no excuse for your table not having been laid out correctly (although soup spoons are not a standard part of the set up these should have been served with the soup) or indeed for the continental buffet not being replenished in due time and I thank you for your feedback and we will continue to focus on team training to address these matters.

Thank you once again for your review and I sincerely hope that all the positives outweigh the constructive critisism and to welcome you back for another golf break in the near future.

With Warm Regards.

I stayed here with a number of colleagues on a business trip to Cheshire for two nightsThe rooms were huge with avery comfortable big bed and a huge bathroom with both a bath and a shower. The breakfast was very good with anything you wanted cooked to order and arriving very quickly. The bar staff were also very friendly bringing drinks over and a selection of olives and nuts. Even though I only had a pint the bar staff offered me a second snack tray. The second night had a gold society event and there were a few drunken incidents that my colleagues witnessed in the middle of the night but I slept like a log.The only down side was poor mobile phone reception. To some that could be a bonus !

I had heard good things about this hotel and was quite disappointed with the poor service. We had travelled with 50 other people and the hotel appeared under staffed with service non existent in places. Food was ok if you got it that is, one our our group requested his sweet course 5 times and it never arrived. Service in the bar was slow and prices as usual far to high.
Rooms were quite big and comfortable although the minuscule TV and poor programme reception disappointing. We were here 2 nights and the room cleaning service mirrored the rest of the hotel by producing the bare minimum. Nice location but work to do.

Thank you for your review. I was sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations when visiting us with a groups of 50. I was sorry to hear that one of the groups 50 dessert was delayed.

The overriding feedback from the event was extremely positive and I am sorry that on this occassion you do not agree.
