“8 Out of 9 Meals Isn't Good Enough”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

I have eaten at the Hazel Pear several times for lunch and always had an enjoyable experience, so decided to take a group of friends for a birthday evening meal, & I was embarrassed!
We took a party of 9 people. Ordered and received 9 starters (although it did take a while), ordered 9 meals but only received 8 (how does this happen), the staff didn't even realise until we told them, then we were fobbed off that the chef wasn't happy with the sausages, why was this not explained before the rest of table had finished their main. Because of this one member of our party didn't eat a main. We then ordered desserts and after waiting 45 minutes we gave up and said we were leaving only to be presented with the full bill, with no real apology.
Such a shame as we live locally and have recommended the pub to friends in the past but after this we will not be eating there again!

“Almost faultless gastro pub.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

Went to the Hazel Pear for dinner on Valentine’s night and having heard good reports about the newly refurbished pub I expected a lot, I was not disappointed. The first thing to greet you is the wonderful ambiance and the warm welcome. The menu is very ambitious but the chef knows what he’s doing and the food is first class, beautifully presented and well cooked.
The young staff are attentive, helpful and seem to be well trained in what they should be doing. Being Valentine’s night the place was packed and the service was somewhat slow but the food and the atmosphere rather made up for this.
My one very small criticism is that with such a nice up-market place they should be using cloth napkins not paper ones. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will definitely return in the very near future.

“Just what it says on the label - Home cooked pub food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

No silly little portions of mushrooms on a tiny bit of toast, or naked servings of black pudding described and charged as "gastro". Just good honest pub grub.
I had the starter of moules in white wine sauce served with a rustic brown bread. Good sized portion, well seasoned and most enjoyable.
Mains for myself was the 'Mutton dressed as lamb,' again a fair sized and very tasty meal. My wife enjoyed the beefburger.
Both followed with sticky toffee pud, and washed down with a good house red.
I will be back to try the steak pie!
