It was when I arranged to attend a friends wedding that I heard of the Waverley hotel. On the back of my Aunt's recommendation I made the weekend booking safe in the knowledge that, as a regular customer for Sunday lunch, her choice was likely to be spot on.
Arriving late on the Friday evening we were pleased to find a walm welcome still waiting, the receptionist was friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. She provided us with excellent directions and advice about where to find outselves a late night snack. The kitchen was closed but having arrived so late we hadn't expected much else. Nonetheless, the hotel is very well located for a number of convenient restaurants, bars and takeaways, (we settled for the chinese takeout which was fabulous).
The communal areas downstairs were bright and open, we particularly liked the idea of having an old fashioned telephone box in the foyer - very original. A conservatory with squashy leather sofas was followed by a bright and homely reception area. A number of residents were present, some of whom clearly stayed there regularly, the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly.
Our room was smart and fresh, what it lacked in luxurious features it certainly made up for cleanliness. Absolutely spotless with pristine bed linen and towels. TV and internet access was available along with comprehensive tea/coffee making facilities. The bath/shower room too was thoroughly cleaned, though not perhaps the most modern fittings there was no doubt about the very high standards maintained.
Two very comfortable nights sleep were had, with the room beautifully tidied and freshened in between. Breakfast was great and there was loads of it. Service in the main restaurant was fast and efficient, the waitress was friendly both days despite the unspeakable hour and the busy numbers, especially on the Sunday.
Overall we had a great stay, there's no pretending that the Waverley is the Ritz but it was very nice, we felt welcomed and valued as customers. A small family run place (even a dog scampering about in the yard) whose standards were far and above the multitude of identikit motorway hotels we could have stayed in.......but I'm really glad we didn't.
We'd gladly stay here again, thanks for the recommendation!!
