“A Fairytale Weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2011

I was really only looking for a convenient hotel close to the many nearby restaurants and thought the online pics and reviews seemed fascinating. The reality, however, was even better. Just a few hundred metres away from the main road through Alderley Edge is this wonderful fairy cottage with a thatched roof. Entering the garden area through lush ferns, ivy and other thriving vegetation, I half expected to find Sleeping Beauty behind the wooden, latched door, ready to awaken from her 100 year sleep. We had the Wizardry Suite, spacious and cosy downstairs, then up the thickly carpeted steps to the bedrooms. The main bedroom had a huge four-poster, lavishly draped in beautiful tapestries. The bedding was equally beautiful and sumptuous. Happily the bathroom was totally 21st century with modern and efficient fittings. The owner, Ian, has created a totally unique hotel (a word which seems so inadequate) and this has obviously been a labour of love. He was so helpful in imparting his wealth of local knowledge; a sincere and very likeable chap. Thank you, Ian, and we look forward to seeing you again.

This has to be Britains best kept secret. Starting before you even enter any of the splendid rooms available. Ian is polite without being pushy and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for him.

Our actual stay was our wedding night (although Becky stayed the night before in order to get ready for the big day) and we could not of picked a more quintessential cottage. We stayed in the camelot room although I could of stayed in everyone of them as they are all magnificent.

The cottage is a credit to Ian and his wife for all their hard work in restoring it to its true splendour and my new wife and I shall be returning, hopefully for our first anniversary ;-)

Room Tip: Each room has its own individuality so strongly recommend viewing before making a decision

Just came back from a weekend at the Wizards Thatch. It was wonderful... everything from the owner Ians lovely manner when greeting you to the the magical rooms. I could have stayed longer as every time you looked round the room their was something else of interest. It is the only time i have ever not been in a rush to start roaming round the place that we were staying. Needless to stay we will be back... if you get the chance to go ..take it

What a truly wonderful visit. This was like going back in time but with all the little luxury touches added in with great care and detail. Just round the corner were all the lovely restraunts in Alderly Edge, where you could even have a takeway as the accomodation had all the crockery and much more. There were special little personal touches by the lovely owner Ian who had obvoiusly spent a lot of time, effort and thought to make this a truly wonderful visit. We will be back! Thank you the Gebhards

Room Tip: They were all very unique but the four poster was very comfy.

From the moment we arrived we knew we were in for an amazing experience. We were greeted and made feel at home even though it was after 10pm when we arrived. The cottage was like stepping back in time and you could feel how it would have been 400 hundred years ago.. We had a hiccup with our luggage with the airline but Ian did everything he could to help us. The cottage itself was only metres from the high street of Alderley Edge which is a beautiful part of Cheshire. There was 4 of us and we all loved every minute of it. Wizards Thatch is a must for anyone wanting something special.

We stayed in the Camelot Suite for one night with two children (there is a room upstairs with a huge bed and a small double downstairs) and loved every minute. We were met there by the owner who was most welcoming and proceeded to show us around, telling us to ring him with any problems. There was milk and bottled water in the fridge and plenty of tea and coffee and even a ginger cake! There is also a large selection of dvd's for a cosy night in front of the telly.
The house itself was immaculate, very clean and very well thought out with a cosy seating area and warm lighting. The main bedroom had a loo with a washbasin in what was like a cupboard, fantastic, and the bathroom was right opposite (no shower though, only mixer tap type shower but you can't stand due to sloped ceiling). It is supposed to be one of the most romantic places to stay and it is very popular for wedding nights (I liked the cd player with Love Songs in the bedroom).
The location is great, just around the corner from the main street in Alderley Edge, where there is plenty of eateries to choose from. I can highly recommend the chinese restaurant, but beware of ordering a large glass of wine as I think its probably half the bottle in the biggest wine glass I've ever seen!!
We had two cars with us and there is only space for one car right at the front of the property, so we parked the other one just up the road in a hotel car park; not a problem as its about a minutes walk away.
All in all a magical, fantastic place and we'd definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Camelot Suite overlooks the main road but traffic noise was not a problem during our stay.
