“good food but cramped”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

party of 6 and all enjoyed the food. downsides are the close proximity of the bar area so no privacy when eating. service was a bit hit and miss with some side dishes coming 20 minutes after the mains which is annoying. Not sure if its a bar with a restaurant or a restaurant with a bar but it needs to have clear demarcation IMO!

“fine but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

this is a place with great atmosphere that always leaves me a little disappointed on the food front. It is not poor but ordinary. I find the wine list rather expensive - not offering good value and relatively straightforward and unremarkable wines at top prices. It is fun but food needs to improve to be really good.

“Really good. Ignore the posers and enjoy the food and service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

I've been here twice recently. Once for snacks and drinks on a Sunday afternoon with my daughters and once with my husband for lunch. Both times excellent. On the first occasion, we did have to complain about the Stilton salad ie very little Stilton in it! It was changed quickly and without fuss and a perfect one replaced it. Even though the replacement was fine, the manager took the cost off the bill. A nice gesture that cost them little in profit but gained them lots in customer satisfaction! On the second occasion I had the roast cod and lentils. The lentils were fantastic with a subtle hint of cumin. Fish was well cooked but placed skin side down onto the lentils so the skin was a bit soggy and had to be removed - presentation and taste would have been better with crispy skin side up. Service was good - fast, friendly and not overly pushing extras. We've booked in for lunch again in 2 weeks so will let you know if the trend continues upwards!

An average restaurant for an average night in an average town. Nothing special in any way. Will I be back? Maybe.

we booked a table for a night out with a friend and his new girlfriend having been here for lunch on a couple of occasions previously. our table was booked for 8.45pm and we arrived at 8 pm. As you would expect the place was bustling on a saturday evening and being in the 'trendy' area of south cheshire was full of young to middle aged affluent and/or well turned out people. The bar area was a bit crowded but we had the good fortune to get pushed to the far end where a couple of ladies were just about to leave and thus gave up their seats at the bar for our female company; had this not have happened i think we would have been far more annoyed about our evening than was the case as you will glean later. As 2 of us were driving (and had a good hours drive to get home) we had to resort to non-alcoholic beers.....ok for the first one or maybe two but thereon not really a good experience.

By 9.15 we were getting a bit anxious about the time it was taking for our table to come free and it was explained that a group of women had been at our table since 6.30 that evening and clearly were not keen on leaving in a hurry. The management did have a word but evidently weren't persuasive enough as they eventually left at 9.45pm....so we were shown to our table an hour late and 1 hr 45 mins after we arrived there. This is interesting since when you book here you receive a text and or e-mail which explains you have the table for a mx of 2 hours...a bit off putting as you want to leave when you are ready but with a high uptake you can understand why they may state that....except of course they evidently don't enforce it!. By that time we sat at our table we had almost gone past eating and the evening was definitely on the back foot. To be fair to the management they did apologise and offered to cover our drinks bill at the bar and also gave us a bottle of cheap bubbly for our inconvenience....a fine gesture BUT by then the night was never going to be memorable for the right reasons.

We ordered our food and the waitress returned to advise that a couple of our choices had sold out. It was worth noting that the main meals do not come with any accompaniments and so whilst they may appear to be perhaps reasonably priced, add a couple of veggies at £3 a dish and suddenly you are into quite a different ball park. By the time we had ordered people around us had finished and moved on so rather than being at the hub of the atmosphere were found ourselves in a dead corner. What we did order arrived reasonably but not overly promptly. i had the fillet steak which was OK but cold but by then i had lost any interest in complaining as there was little point...the night was ruined.

Our bill arrived and as stated the management had wiped off the bar bill (which was not excessive on account that we were driving but a nice gesture all the same) so our bill was reasonable in the end but small consolation for what we had hoped and expected would be a memorable night for all of the right reasons.

i am sorry but we will not be returning to the Alderley Bar and Grille for a very long time and only hope that others don't have the same experience that we had; give it a wide birth and go to Gusto's nearby which has always delivered for us.
