“Meeting up half way between hitchin and reading”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We were looking for a place to meet up and have a meal between Hitchin and Reading. This pub/restaurant met all of our needs . Initially we made a mistake with the sat nav and ended up in the plough restaurant which is about 25 yards before the pub.

On arrival we were concerned as the restaurant room is quite small and was tightly packed . However the staff were friendly the service good and the home cooked roast tasty. My husbands fish and chips was also excellent.
After the meal we had coffees in the bar in front of an open fire. It was a perfect venue to catch up and while away a couple of hours.

if we came again I would bring our dogs they are allowed in the bar and there is a common opposite the pub to walk on.

“Always a Winner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Fab food, atmosphere brilliant, excellent entertainment. It's a lovely typical village pub! The landlord has got it right, he is always friendly - nothing is too much trouble and his staff have the same attitude. Never stayed so cannot comment on the rooms although we have been for breakfast which was perfect with plenty of choices on the menu. The Potters Arms beats the other pub in Winchmore Hill in all aspects including prices.

“lovely food, great pub!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

We had Sunday lunch here and we loved it! Following the recommendations on Tripadvisor, 4 of us visited on a last minute booking. It was very busy and we did have to wait a while for our table, but it was worth it. Gorgeous food, good service and reasonable prices. My son heartily recommends the venison. Our roast dinners were really good - almost as good as mother's cooking! As other reviewers have commented, the decor could do with a revamp, but the open log fire is wonderful. I definitely recommend this place! A great pub lunch.

“Lunch time meal- Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I did a google search for a pub/ restaurant near us and found a few but read a few trip advisor reviews since it was a special meal before my husband went away on business for three weeks and deciced, after seeing the online menu, pictures and reviews to try The Potters Arms. Got the sat nav out and off we went!! Missed the turn off first time but after a u turn on our way again! Firstly we came to The Plough, who's menu online didn't appeal anyway and we thought we'd taken the wrong turn but persevered and found our destination... And so glad we did! Food.....AMAZING Hospitality...AMAZING!!
Richard the owner was so welcoming, and so were the locals- thank you.
Food- only criticism we could give- starters to big but to tasty to waste!!!! my husband had the calamari - proper, fresh and perfectly cooked with a fresh salad and sweet chilli sauce- not your usual elastic band frozen and deep fried stuff! I had the king prawn in garlic and herb hutter- lovely!! Fresh warm bread, 6 large prawns!!! A meal in itself!!
Mains my husband had the Rib eye steak- it was melt in the mouth so perfectly cooked! I had the monkfish in pancetta- portions perfect and asparagus cooked to perfection!!
What impressed us even more was the owner told us the head chef was on holiday and the comis chef was working alone- a youngster not yet 17!!! This young person has a fantastic future ahead- thank you for a fantastic meal.
As for hospitality- thank you Richard! You are a perfect host and we wish you well it was our first visit from a simple google search- but we will be back and will be recommending The Potters Arms
