“Nice Country Retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

We recently visited Flitwick Manor, The reception area is informal with a leather topped desk rather than the usual corporate style normally used in hotels. We were allocated room 14, located on the ground floor via the lounge the room is more a suite consisting of bathroom/toilet, bedroom and sitting area with tv and direct access to the grounds via french doors. On arrival there were homemade cookies in the room along with a good selection of teas and a small fruit selection. Arriving late we didn't eat but did enjoy a few drinks in the lounge. Because we arrived late it gave us a chance to see the lighting on the long gravel drive and grounds, this adds a whole dimension to this building and grounds. Breakfast was full English and was very nice, service was courteous at all times the staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Room 14 is very nice

Stayed here recently with a Living Social deal, as a surprise for my husband's birthday. Lovely hotel. Staff were all pleasant and helpful. Even from booking I was impressed. Joan took my booking and ensured my husband wouldn't receive the confirmation email and thus spoil the surprise. I was really pleased with the thoughtfulness she showed. Our room was lovely. Rm 14 with a conservatory attached. We had our cream tea (part of the deal) served here, chef's freshly prepared scones and home made jams and lemon curd were divine. Dinner was excellent, good choice, very well cooked and presented. Not sure how we had room for breakfast, but somehow we did. It was delicious. All freshly cooked to order and wide choice of continental breakfast too. Nothing to fault at Flitwick Manor. Would definitely return.

My wife and I stayed overnight with evening meal.

The hotel is very accessible and not far from the M1 or Flitwick railway station, but is very peaceful, and we enjoyed watching deer from the terrace before our evening meal.

The service was attentive and despite being part of the Menzies group, Flitwick Manor is very individual and nothing like a large chain hotel.

Our meal and breakfast (cooked to order) were both very enjoyable.

We stayed in a superior room (room 4) which had fantastic views over the gardens, and was very quiet at night. You can hear the odd train in the distance with the windows open, but there was no noise from the hotel at all.

Well recommended for a peaceful and relaxing stay.

Likes:
1) Fantastic settings: the English garden with the century old trees, immaculate lawns, the terrace from where you can sip a well prepared Pimm's lemonade, the old club-bar and the restaurant, all give you the true feeling of an old manor.
2) The service before dinner: the staff will take you to the bar or terrace, where you can sip a drink while glancing over the menu. You will be called to your table when the food is ready. It all exudes traditional English service, a bit formal and very helpful.
3) The restaurant: I ate there 3 nights, and food was superb. Yes, portions were limited if you are used to eat a Mammoth steak for breakfast - but after 3 courses I always left full and happy.
4) The value for the money: take half board and it is a very good price for the quality of food you receive.
Now the only thorny dislike:
1) Unfortunately the wall separating my room 9 from room 12 is a simple cardboard. When guests enter their room, even as they whisper or switch the light, I could hear everything. If this is after midnight, I use to gently knock on the wall to inform them about my presence, but one night one lady did not appreciate, and start shouting "I shall not have any of those **** knock on the wall". Clearly her ladyship had a bit too much of those excellent Pimm's lemonades.
I understand that this hotel is a bit old and clearly at that time soundproof walls were not common - but yes, this is clearly a serious issue for a hotel of such standing.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 9 and 12, ask for a room with a decent wall separating from other room.

On a 1000km bike ride to celebrate being 70, I cycled into Flitwick and decided on spur of moment to try this place, which turned out to be by far the friendliest place I stayed at in my 15 days of cycling. Very reasonably priced for a hotel situated in beautiful parkland. Even after I had checked in I was upgraded to a lovely room with a very comfortable four-poster bed.

What really left a lasting impression was the friendliness of staff, who seemed genuinely interested in what I was doing. Helpful, as well, in making sure my bike was safe for the night.

I purchased a Living Deals voucher for this hotel for a night bed & breakfast + cream tea + 3 course dinner & coffee. It was great value. The hotel is lovely & the staff very friendly. Sometimes a little slow to clear plates etc away (our cream tea stuff was still outside the next day) but the room we had was beautiful and the food excellent. Lovely location & genuinely a joy to be there.

Room Tip: ours was Number 7 (Hesse Room) lovely, although above the carpark, not that this is a problem really

On arrival we were met by a member of staff and from that moment the service was exceptional. We were there for a anniversary so there was at least 10 couples waiting for the rooms to be cleaned because we all arrived early but to her credit she sorted out a few rooms that we could take turns in to change as things were starting at 12.30pm so time was short but through her professionalism all were changed and ready on time.
The room we had was very well maintained and kept to a high standard. The four poster bed was a first but gave a fantastic sleep. There are rooms on the ground level for the less mobile of us. But there is a serious need for hand rails in some areas of steps.
The food was excellent served by very attentive staff. There was ample meat and vegetables cooked perfectly.
After the meal many people took a stroll round the gardens then sat outside enjoying the sunshine.
The evening buffet was roasted lamb and pork done in large ovens and was excellent.
Overall an perfect place for a ceremony, wedding, party or just to escape the drone of life for a break. With first class staff and idealic surroundings.

Room Tip: Everyone said their room was very good but for the less mobile request a ground floor room.
