5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

My husband and I stayed in Esencia for six nights and had a most relaxing and enjoyable time in beautiful surroundings. We had excellent food served to us by well-trained and friendly staff and we loved the way the rooms were positioned amongst the trees. The gardens and beach were beautifully kept and very private and the massages in the spa were the best we have ever experienced.

We would definitely recommend Esencia as a location to visit when in Mexico.

Esencia has been on my list of “places-to-stay” in Mexico for a few years… I was thrilled to find a great last minute deal for a few days of much needed R&R. We spent 5 restful nights in a LARGE garden room – one of the best, most comfortable rooms I’ve ever stayed in. Located on the 2nd floor, it felt like we had our own private treehouse. The bed was divine, and we loved having coffee each morning on the private terrace.

The daily morning yoga was a perfect way to start each day - great instructors and beautiful setting with views & sounds of the ocean in the background.

Service was top notch all-around. The beach service was especially impressive. They make sure you have everything you need and even re-make your beach chair if you go for a swim.

The beach is beautiful and private, with plenty of room for long beach walks, swimming and snorkeling.

We didn’t have any spa treatments, but enjoyed using the private jacuzzi and plunge pool at the spa.

On the topic of food, we loved the Breakfast – especially the Mexican inspired dishes, like the Chile Rellenos. The Green Ceviche was delicious – our go-to lunch, along with a mango or strawberry margarita.

My only critique of Esencia was the dinner restaurant Sal y Fuego. The Fresh Fish Filet our waiter recommended was totally bland & rubbery – overcooked. The Shrimp Tamarindo was overpowered by a heavy Asian flavored sauce. The Shrimp linguini was cooked well, but in desperate need of seasoning. We did enjoy the Mixed Tostadas appetizer and Chocolate Bomb dessert. Overall, the food quality did not live up to the high price and we opted to drive into Playa Del Carmen for dinner most nights. Also, the lighting in the restaurant is SO dim that it’s hard to read the menu and puts you right to sleep. Turn up the lights!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Esencia and would definitely go back!

Room Tip: We loved the top floor Garden View room - felt like a private treehouse and didn't miss having a...

My husband and I had a lovely few days here. Everything slowed down--we enjoyed coffee and pastry on our private veranda each morning, walked on the quiet beach, and had a corner of the open-air restaurant to ourselves each night at dinner. The food was delicious.

Just finishing a return trip to Esencia...last time here was Dec 2011. This is a heavenly retreat, a lovely and quiet location. The service is so relaxed and over the top in quality. Spa, meals, beach, etc.

Great experience across the board. Responsive staff, very nice amenities, beautiful and unique grounds and rooms. Food on-site is a bit pricey but Tulum and PDC are both a short drive away if you want to mix in some more low key options. Beach was stunning and quite private. Decent snorkling right off the short. A genuinely relaxing stay. Rack rates are quite pricey but we did come across a nice 3-for-price-of-2 night promotion. It looked like they do offer special rates now and then directly through the website.

Room Tip: Rooms with plunge pools are worth the splurge. They are also semi-jacuzzis if it is a chilly night...

We really enjoyed the level of service. At any moment, if we needed a drink, towel, snorkeling gear, there was someone within seconds to address our needs. The food was great and our only complaint is the lack of variety of food. As a boutique hotel, I think that's expected.

No critics for this charming place. All done in style and very peaceful cosy atmosphere. Rooms could feature un deco magazines. Excellent food / very efficient and charming staff. The SPA is a worth a visit but make sure you ask for a strong massage.
