“Nice but watch out for traveler's diarrhea”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2011

Nice room, but chambermaids leave door open when servicing and lots of mosquitoes entered. Not enough bottled water provided each day. Fairly isolated location, good if you just want to stay at resort. Not great souvenir shopping at resort.
We 'thought' food was good...but both ended up with bad stomach cramps & diarrhea (one of us for 7 days; 4 at resort and 3 days back at home). And we were careful: took preventative prescription drug prior to going, only ate at resort, only drank bottled water, and did not drink alcohol excessively (maybe that was our mistake?). Enjoyed pool staff that served drinks etc. Too many europeans that smoked!
Not sure if we would go back.

The resort it self and the people are wonderful this is day 5 of a 7 day stay and My main complaint is that when we arrived we had to wait 45 min for transport which was not the fault of the Resort. Upon arrival we were taken aside and told there were no rooms for us. We are a group of 6 and had been planning this for 6 months! We were transferred to the sister resort which is on a much lower scale. Once again the people were wonderful. We arrived in Cancun at 4:00PM and our first "day" was spent waiting and moving Resorts. We arrived back at the Royal Tulum at 12:00 the next day to our rooms not ready and once again having to wait for rooms and our luggage. I am very disappointed in the fact that we lost an entire day and a half of our vacation trough no fault of our own. Yes they did "upgrade" us but that does not give us back our time. The only reason I would not recommend this hotel is for the time we missed out on and the inconvience.

This was our 2nd year staying at this resort. We absolutely loved it last year and went back again this year. Last year was perfect, this year not so perfect. Still good just down a notch. Our check in was disappointing. We booked this trip last year (I think in July) and in special requests asked for rooms in buliding 5 or 6 if possible. There were 6 of us going (3 rooms). We received rooms in buildings 3 and 4. I asked again at check in if we could have building 5 or 6 and was told no they were booked. We booked junior suites and when I asked at check in if these rooms were junior suites we were told "I don't know". They were. Our room was a old room with a short bed and a tub that was so steep to get in it was almost dangerous. Last year we had this great shower and room. The clerk did not give us towels to wipe off at check in. He did finally get us a drink. The food and service at meals was outstanding. The beach was great. Service on the beach was good the 1st part of the week and not so good from Thursday on. We always tipped. We still liked the resort......it just was alittle disappointing after such a great experience last year.

I'm a sightseer, my wife is a beach lover, so I came here with trepidation. I left really liking this resort. It's about an hour to an hour and a half trip from the airport and far from the nightlife of Cancun, but that's why we liked this place. Upon arrival at check-in we were given welcoming drinks and I knew I was in the right place! The 2nd night there, a fruit basket with a bottled of champagne was delivered to our room. The room (a junior suite) was very large with a walk-in shower that could easily fit 4 people if so desired. The water from the bathroom tap was brown at times, but it's not for drinking. Free bottled water and and beer is provided daily for the mini-fridge. My only complaint about the room was the bed was a bit hard, but not to the point that we couldn't sleep.
The finest feature of Catalonia has to be their large and beautifully groomed beach. Silky white sand with no rocks and waves from gentle to a couple of feet at times. You have to get to the beach early to reserve a spot (with your beach towels) under a thatched covering, but you could generally find a spot under a shady palm tree at almost any time.
Missing from this beach...children and frisbee throwing young adults. It was quiet and relaxing.
The food was very good and we enjoyed all 6 restaurants. However, the seating at Tapas (a great gustatory experience) was very uncomfortable (low slung cushion seats) and it was next to impossible to read the menu because of tiny print and very low light. But that same low lighting led to a very romantic setting. You feel like you're in the middle of a rain forest. Breakfast (either buffet or waiter served) was wonderful and bountiful. We also especially liked the food at the Italian and Mexican restaurants.
I mentioned I was a sightseer and we took the local collectivos (large bus vans) to both Tulum and Playa Del Carmen. The cost....about $6 per person roundtrip. These collectivos constantly go by right outside the resort entrance and are SAFE and efficient.
Finally, let me say the service and friendliness at Catalonia was outstanding. ALWAYS a smile and "hola" from EVERYONE!

My husband and I were actually at this resort almost a year ago, but I have been using the reviews on Trip Advisor so much lately to book other trips, I thought I'd better contribute! This was our first all inclusive trip and we did choose it in great part because of the positive reviews - we also got a great last minute deal. As others have noted, the resort is about 90 minutes from the airport. We were in a small passenger van and went almost directly to the resort. Check in was easy and the room was large and clean. Only complaint here was the lampshades were all rusted through the fabric. Not a big deal, but not pleasant to look at. All the food we had over the week was very good – nothing 5 * amazing, but very good, fresh and lots of variety at the restaurants and bars. The only one we didn’t try was the tapas (just ran out of time!) & the only one I didn’t really like was the Mexican restaurant, which was funny because I love Mexican food. My husband enjoyed his meal though, so maybe I didn’t make a great choice. The staff was consistently beyond friendly. They actually seemed happy, which lent a nice vibe to the place. We loved that this is a smaller all inclusive, so nothing was very far. The resort itself is on an absolutely beautiful beach with turquoise water. I have a lot of beach experience and it rivals the best. We have traveled to this area in Mexico before, so we only spent one day off the resort and that was to go on tour with Alltournative Adventures. We would both highly recommend this. Swimming in the cenotes was incredible and lunch was made for us by a Mayan family. Outstanding food! I would definitely book with this company again. A couple final notes: the resort is very quiet with no nightlife. We were looking for a super relaxing trip, so we were okay with this, but there were a couple nights it would have been nice to have a lively bar. Also, we would have booked private transport back to the airport had we know that we would be picked up in a large bus that proceeded to pick up people at many of the resorts along the way. This all added up to a loonnngg bus trip, and a loonngg wait at the airport since we arrived very early for our flight.
