“Nice Resort - RUDE French and Italians!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2011

This resort is very nice and in a great location near lots of things to see. We have been to most of the top notch resorts up and down the Riviera Maya coast and this resort is just a notch below them overall. We had to try it after all the rave reviews. The food overall was good, with plenty of options. The breakfast buffet was pretty good, lots to choose from. Had to tell a Europian where to GET OFF!! and to keep his nose off the syrup bottle! If you want to know what it is, put some on your finger and taste it!! The room was nice with plenty of space for a standard room. The patio was secluded because of the foilage, not much to see on the ground floor. We were in building 4, which is right in the middle of the resort. I think if i had to choose, it would be building 5 or 6 because they are closer to the beach and you are more apt to be barefoot heading in that direction as opposed to heading to the front desk, or reasturants with shoes on. The stone pathways are a little hard on the heels! The beach is very nice! Secluded from other resorts. Snorkling was good up and down the beach near the rocks. Service was very good. We took a van to the small town of Chemuyil, what a cool little town!! 40 pesos for the two of us. Nice local shops with great prices. We ate at a nice outdoor grill in front of the owners home. They were so nice and the food was terrific!! The bill was next to nothing and for that we tipped them very well and they were very thankful. This town was the highlight of our trip! The people were so friendly. We meet a guy from Indiana that had a new 2 bedroom house there that he visits 5 or 6 times a year. He gave us a tour of it and the town. Very nice place. He said he would rent it to us for a week or more. The price was a very reasonable price, and it's just 2 blocks from the beach! He gave us his business card and said to just give him a call or e-mail him. If you want his name and number e-mail me. Like a few have stated, this is a nice resort for the money, but because of the rude French and Italians who were to stuck up to make a conversation, and leave there cigarette butts, and packs on the beach, we will take our vacations at the other fine resorts in the Riviera Maya where we've never had a problem with rude guests. Viva America! and Canada!

We just came back from two weeks at the CRT and it was truly wonderful. We had been referred by friends and we were not disappointed. The beach is our number one priority and it did not disappoint. We stayed at another hotel in the Mayan Riveria 3 years ago and although the hotel that we chose was great the beach was horrible. This beach was excellent. My husband loves to body surf and some days it was great. Never had a problem getting a lounger at the beach or around the pool.
The rooms were more than adequate and we had a standard room. Clean and it was such a nice touch with the nightly turn down service. There were several little things that they did that went above and beyond for that extra little bit that goes a long way. The staff was great, tip them well, they deserve it.
The food was great and listen up people, if you read reviews complaining about the food then you wonder how these people eat at home. This is not McDonalds fare!! There was everything you could have imagined. Liked the idea of ala carte everynight but the only downside to this was no reservations. We were travelling with a party of six and some evenings it was hard to get room in the restaurants. You had a choice of eating rather early - 6:30-7:00 or waiting till 9:30-10:00. We did spend 4 days with just two of us and it didn't seem to be a problem getting seating then but if you are a larger party be prepared.
I like to get quite dressed up at these resorts and that fluctuated with the crowds. All around very few people dressed up. The pathways to the rooms can be a little hard to maneuver with spike heels on.
I would not hesitate it a minute to refer this hotel to anyone and can't wait to go back. It was also a big bonus being adult only.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2011

Just got home a few days ago after a week stay. Everything good that has been said on here about the resort, its staff, its pool, roooms, beach and other wise is pretty spot on.

We had a Junior Suite that was very, very nice and worth the money. Very spacious, pretty soft bed, AC, huge walk in shower, the works. And for people that ask about the turn down service, all they do is (while we were usually at diner) turn the covers downa a touch and put some individually wrapped honey by your pillow, the mayans believed it helped them sleep. Kind of a nice touch.

The beach was one of the best I have ever been on and I've seen them all over the Caribbean and Mexico. Combed and raked every morning as I was always down there very early looking for shells and coral. PINK and white sand, I emphasize pink cuz I was shocked at how much there was and no one on here has mentioned it that I had seen. Just a stunning beach. In either direction there is a few small villas with some guests and to the south a closed down resort. Also a couple of small shops if you dont wanna go to town for souvenirs.

Staff was top knotch from bottom to top. Bartenders were pretty funny and would double up the booze if you asked and slip them a tip now and again. The restaraunt staff was very polite and really quick in the Italian restaraunt. We werent as impressed with the food at the Tapas lounge as everyone else, but it is a stunning atmosphere. The steak house was ok but the steaks were a little thin, no biggie. We usually had a big lunch with fresh pico de gallo and guacomole anyway, so we didnt need a huge diner by any means.

Quick FYI, its an $18 dollar cab ride to Playa De Carmen and it takes about 15 minutes to get there. We went one day when the sky was overcast.

As far as language barrier it would help anyone visiting to know a few basic spanish phrases, it helped me out ordering and such. Mainly I was greeted always in Spanish but what even I replied in was spoken back to me. Only exception was a few maids who didnt know much English, but it was never a problem, after all we are a guest in their country.

The wildlife on site was really amazing, iguanas, lots of birds, and Coat Mundis wich was very awesome, we werent expecting to see any but found a family and fed one from our second floor room.

I'll close with my only dislike which is in fact NOT a knock on the resort or its staff, but its guests. As many others have said, over 75% of the guests were either Italian or French, mainly Italian, I'm sure the name of the resort (Catalonia) is the draw here. I'm mid thirties, not a party hound, but do like enjoyng conversations with people from all walks of life and have made great firends on other trips. Dont expect any of this there, I realize probably most of them dont speak English (but some did very well, I heard them) but they wont even look at you once they find out your American (or Canadien for that matter). When you say hello, they just look away and keep walking when a simple Bonjour would suffice. After the first three days I didnt even bother speaking anymore unless I heard English, or Spanish I knew. There was also a very annoying booking agency called Veratour who worked very closely with the resorts beach staff, which was decieving because it appeared we were being ignored by the resort staff, but then we later discovered who they were and that they had a select few guests that they bugged ALL day long and most evenings to. My Ipod got a lot of run time to avoid having to listen.

We loved the place its really nice, but wont return because of the rude foreigners. Such a shame too.

We came here as two couples mid-January for a week of relaxing. Our criteria was: good beach, passable food, unlimited drinks, and no hassles. We got what we expected and overall had a great trip. We came with open minds and good attitudes, and left with tans, low stress, full bellies, and big smiles.

Reception = **
After an hour's drive from the airport, we were greeted by the front desk without having to wait, and we were handed cold glasses of mango kool-aid. Good start. We were then told that, even though we had reservations five months prior with the specific request to have rooms next to each other, we would be in completely different buildings. Never mind - not a good start. We could, however, get EVERYTHING we asked for, PLUS chocolate covered strawberries if we upgraded to the Junior Suites for an extra $50/night. (Normally $100/night, but we got the "special offer", of course.) "No, thanks," we said. Followed up with another five-minute spiel about upgrading. "NO, THANK YOU," we said again, then finished up and headed to our rooms. Twenty minutes later our bags arrived (where were they?). Fortunately, we were able to change rooms the next day -- the same building, if not neighboring rooms.

Rooms = ***
The rooms were clean and comfortable. The beds were firm, but not excessively so. Shower head was narrow and weak, but manageable. I noticed tiny crawling bugs all around the nightstands -- sometimes on the headboard, but they didn't seem to be of the biting variety, and they didn't get on my skin. Locked my valuables in the safe and didn't have any problems.

Grounds = ****
As far as resorts go, this place was kept in great shape. Very clean and well-maintained. The jungle passage was fun to walk through every day (the ambient music is a great touch!). The restrooms are all kept clean, the lighting is just right, and we always felt safe.

Beach = ****
The sand is clean, white powder. Flawless. The water is clear, warm, and rolls in gently. The beach is wide but shallow -- during peak hours, it was packed full of chairs, usually about three rows deep before getting to the tree line. We usually got to the beach between 8 or 9am to claim a spot (plenty available at that time), had some breakfast, then came back for the day. Spots will be limited (though not impossible to find) after noon on sunny days. This is not a beach where you will find solitude -- but it is beautiful, and the people seemed to be considerate with regards to noise/smoking/staring. Our favorite part of the trip was running around the empty beach at night and diving into the warm, calm sea, swimming under the moonlight. Surreal.

Pools = ***
The main pool is huge, but didn't seem to get much use. Perhaps because you can expect to be watched by everybody sitting along the edges like you're a dolphin doing tricks or something. The hot tubs have a great view, but the temperatures were inconsistent. Half the time they were lukewarm, and when they were hot, they were packed. It's a shame they close at 8pm.

Food = **
We've had food from all-inclusive resorts before, so we knew to keep our expectations low. The food here is average. The multi-restaurant setup is a nice idea and it did bring some variety, but overall everything had a similar taste and texture. Same weird "Swiss" cheese, same "ketchupy" sauce, same rubbery mushrooms, etc. The breakfast buffet was usually pretty good -- though the scrambled eggs were consistently runny and the fruit always seemed a couple days past prime. (I recommend the french toast.) Lunch buffet had a good selection, especially the desserts. Dinner was hit-or-miss. The Mexican restaurant was our favorite -- best quality, best variety. Tapas had some yummy treasures, but being Typical Americans we never really got enough :) Italian wasn't nearly as bad as people warned -- if you go, just stay away from the seafood. The steakhouse was probably our least favorite -- burnt burgers, puny servings of vegetables, and a mysterious lack of fries. Overall, we ate plenty and didn't have any health issues, but we wouldn't call the cuisine the highlight of our trip.

Drinks = ***
We came for unlimited margaritas and we had...one. The super-sugary-syrupy margaritas were not worth the effort of asking for customizations every time we ordered. The surprise favorite was the Caipirinha (kind of like a mojito) - strong, refreshing, and not at all syrupy. Another favorite was the Iceberg - cold beer topped with a layer of frozen margarita (small enough to not notice the super-sweetness when paired with the beer). Sadly, there was no wine available without having to shell out extra cash, but we were well-inebriated from the other offerings.

Waitstaff = **
Underwhelming table service. We had a few high-energy waiters who greeted us warmly, but in almost every case we were soon forgotten. We typically waited 10-15 minutes for our drinks, and only once were offered refills without asking. The best service was at the Tapas restaurant, which also had, by far, the finest ambiance of all the restaurants. To be clear, we tipped and tried to make friends with the waitstaff, but it seemed to go unnoticed.

Bartenders = *****
The bartenders, on the other hand, were very fast, very friendly, and genuinely good people. We became good friends with the night guy at the Margarita bar, Jesus. He started pouring beers for us when he saw us coming back from the beach so that they were ready by the time we reached the bar. Every time. They're all great sources of information, too -- good dining tips, when to sneak into the pool after closing hours, weather, translations, etc.

Nightlife = **
The resort becomes eerily quiet after dinner hours. No music. Few people. Just silence. We routinely walked up to the empty Margaritas bar at 10pm and asked Jesus if the place was closed. (Nope -- open until 2!) Everyone seems to turn in early here, which is fine, but we felt like a nuisance talking and laughing at midnight. The exception was pool party night, which had music blasting until late (fun, but probably keeping the whole resort awake).

Weather
We were there mid-January, near the beginning of the "high season". Temperatures were high-70's, sometimes low 80's. Over the course of a week we had three clear days, two days partly cloudy, and two cloudy days (with occasional sprinkles). If I had my way I'd probably go back later in January into February to improve our chances of nicer weather. We had plenty of sun, but a few more clouds than we had hoped for.

The Italians
Several reviewers have noted "The Italians" -- I thought I'd say couple things. A giant tour bus will roll in regularly, dropping off a crowd of vacationers who seem to be primarily from Italy. They have scheduled outings and events, which means certain parts of the resort will go from dead to packed very quickly. They were generally fairly nice, but definitely boisterous. Some of them chain-smoked on the beach, but it was easy enough to find a spot away from the smoke. Didn't get to know any of them personally because they stuck to their own circles. Let's just say, every day was good, but the days without the Italians were the best.

Abandoned resorts nearby
Some interesting, though creepy-looking ruins are scattered along the beach in either direction. Take a look when the light is good, but watch out for the guard dogs!

===============

Overall = *** 1/2
We had a great time and would recommend this place to friends. Next time, I'll probably choose a place with a bigger beach (or fewer people) and better reputation for food/drinks. If you get a good deal, give this place a try.

I did a lot of research all over south-central America & the Caribbean for our wedding location - considering cost and what we would like to experience as well as for our guests - this place was great!

We upgraded to the Honeymoon Suite (an extra $475 USD? - not an actual Jr. Suite, but upgraded room) which was worth it, awesome room, free couples' massage, dinner on the beach (we didn't the the chance to do it), upgraded room amenities, free Honeymooner's t-shirts, champagne with chocolate covered strawberries in our room (twice actually, we're still not sure why the 2nd time!).

We had Jacqueline as our wedding planner who was great. We chose the renewal of vows package to avoid all the hassles of a legal Mexican wedding. We paid extra for fruit + chocolate and speaker for music after the ceremony on the beach. We brought artificial wedding flowers so I used my flower allowance that came with the package + a little extra $$ and get nice white and blue orchid boutonnieres and corsages for our guests. We had our wedding dinner at the Royal Grill, but requested to be on the other side (usually closed) so it wouldn't be so windy and more private - they accommodated us without extra charge and we had 2 dedicated servers. The food presentation was top notch and impressive. The servers were very attentive and met our every need. I had to select a menu for our dinner and it was great. Thanks again Jacqueline and our two servers and of course, the chef!

Pros

- nicely stocked mini bars (every day!)
- Most staff spoke English (not so much the maids/cleaners but they always smiled!)
- great staff! They all seemed pretty happy, great service.
- Good food & drinks. Top shelf liquor available, just ask!
- Good selection of restaurants (excellent breakfast buffet by the lobby & lunch buffet by the pool-beach)
- Beautiful stone pathway from the lobby to all 6 buildings and finally to the pool area. Nicely shaded from the afternoon sun
- Awesome awesome beach! lots of beach and pool chairs (good quality)
- cool juice bar on the beach (ma-loo)
- hot water in the hot tubs! (between the beach and pool, 3 altogether)
- lovely big pool with fountain (cold water though)
- not crammed next to other resorts
- free wi-fi in the rooms, we had great reception in our building 6, third floor room
- nice renovated rooms & suites (some are still being upgraded/renovated)
- great service, even without a tip! Very personable staff
- good live entertainment at night in the lobby
- no theft, have a great loss prevention plan in place at the resort with security. We left some money out, laptop, no issues whatsoever
- reasonable wedding packages and great wedding planners!
- great servers at the pool and beach (also use large plastic hurricane glasses for drinks!
- nice, big open air lobby
- nice deli beside pool bar for snacks! Watch out for the birds and the french fry eating iguana!
- bathrooms on the resort are all nice, even the one by the beach/pool!

Cons

- some of the rooms are not renovated yet, hard beds in those!
- no dinner buffets
- disco lounge - music too loud, nice lounge
- no swim-up bar

Suggestions for the resort

- organize some nightly activities at the disco lounge or pool bar and start them earlier than 11pm, why not 9-9:30pm?
- Turn down the volume in the nice disco lounge!
- finish the renovations of the rooms
- offer a dinner buffet 3 nights a week
- organize a fee-based shuttle to Playa Del Carmen where guests pay $5 each (very reasonable & possible as they eliminated the free shuttle due to taxi union protests)
- pool heater in the off-season. The water is very cold!
- some shutters to cut down the wind for the Royal Grill Restaurant at night

First off thanks to Fayette with Tripguy.com for helping arrange our third group trip. The Catalonia Royal Tulum resort in the Riviera Maya area of Mexico was wonderful. After a little shaky start because of an airline failure Fayette and Funjet got us back on course. We ended up with great flight times. Utilizing the price protection portion of the insurance was a plus also as we feel we received a tremendous value.
The Catalonia Royal Tulum is a great resort. Somewhat unique as the rooms are in a jungle setting with beautiful stone paths leading from the lobby to the beach. The clear water, white sand, and lack of rocks makes for a perfect beach. Good snorkeling right at the resort also. We ate at all the restaurants and enjoyed the food and variety. The rooms are nice and also quiet. Always people working to keep the resort clean. We utilized what the resort had to offer and enjoyed everyday.
All of us said this a place we could easily return to.

My husband and I stayed here, along with some friends for a week in January 2011. The beach is probably one on the best at the all inclusives in the area. The water is perfect for swimming, and you see lots of angel fish in the shallows. There aren't other resorts nearby, so although it is pretty crowded, you can walk up the beach a bit for some privacy, you just won't get a chair. Although, I have to say I didn't appreciate all the cigarette smoke and topless fat ladies.
For the most part, the employees working there were very kind and friendly. I loved the cute towel art the maids leave on the bed, and those girls working the drinks on the beach deserve a raise. Don't miss going out on the hobie cat with Marco Polo, and tip him good. The massage I got at the spa was very nice too. The one problem we had with the service is that the phone in our room didn't work all week. They were waiting for some part to fix it. It wasn't until I complained multiple times that I was offered another room, but we had already switched rooms once because the Wifi didn't work on the ground floor room and I found it too dark there. So we didn't want to pack everything up to move again. I thought they could have offered some other recompense, like a credit to the gift shop or spa.
As for the food and drink service.... well, that is the reason we probably won't be back. I liked the idea that you didn't have to have reservations or dress up for dinner, that was a major selling point for going there, but it was 'hit or miss' where to food was concerned. Most of the food was named after dishes I normally eat, but they didn't taste anything like what I was used to. I don't mean to say it was all bad. Flank steak at The Grill was good, breakfast omlettes, the pizza at the beach, and some items at Tapas. (Although they changed the menu halfway through our trip. The old menu had better appetizers and desserts, but the new menu has better entrees.) The night we tried the Mexican my husband got really sick and was alternately throwing up or having diarrhea all night, and didn't feel great the rest of the trip. I thought it was weird that they didn't have very good Mexican, when we were in Mexico. I think they try too hard to have fancy items, when people just want basic Mexican. If you want really good Mexican, La Buena Vida in Akumal on the beach is awesome.
That brings me to drinks, they were totally unpredictable, but overall the mixed drinks weren't good. You could order the same drink and get something totally different every time. Generally they were too sicky sweet and bitter. I have never had a pina colada and strawberry dacquiri I didn't like until this trip. I just ordered pop after a while, and that was fine.
Don't bother with room service. The menu is very limited, and it isn't good.
Having said all that. I still think overall it was a good value. If only they had better food and drinks, and my husband hadn't gotten sick, we would be coming back for years.
