“Great Time at CRT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2010

Just returned last night from a quickie 5 night stay at CRT. What a great resort, hard to believe it's a 3 1/2 *, just hope that with so many positive reviews we'll be able to return! So many people we talked with said they had gotten info and booked because of what they had read on TA, and everyone we met was more than pleased, so word has definitely gotten around.

The resort is not very impressive from the road, especially if you've been to any of the other AI's in this area of Mexico where you drive down km's of landscaped roadway before you reach the lobby of the resort. But, what it lacks in curb appeal more than makes up for it. From our first encounter with the staff until our check out everyone was friendly, always smiling and saying Hola.

We were in Bldg. 3 in one of their renovated rooms, non-smoking, king bed and on the 2nd floor. Very spacious room with nice bathroom, large shower (no bathtub), powerful hairdryer, nice towels, 2 bathrobes and 2 pair of slippers, ironing board & iron (does anyone still iron???), everything needed to make for a comfortable stay. They advertise in-room wi-fi and I brought my notebook to keep in touch with family on Skype, it was a bit sketchy as sometimes the signal was very strong then just went out, they were experiencing problems with it during our stay, there are also 2 computers in the lobby area for use at $5 USD for 30 minutes. Bldg. 3 was pretty much in the middle and very convenient to both the restaurants and the pool and beach.

The resort itself is beautiful, everything is so well taken care of, the pool is huge, grounds fantastic and what can I say about the white sand beach that hasn't already been said? The food was more than adequate, we did have dinner at each of the restaurants but didn't make it for tapas. Our favorite was LaSelva, very good food with good service, the Mexican restaurant and the Grill were good, only negative was at Toscana, the Italian restaurant, the food was fine but our waiter was very cranky & rude.

Really don't have much more to share that hasn't already been told. We had a great time, met several couples and hope to have made life-long friends with one couple. Time went by too fast and we hope to return.

My boyfriend and I spent a week at Catalonia Royal Tulum. We found everything to be wonderful, except the bed! They are currently updating the rooms, so half have new pillow top beds and half have rock hard beds. We got a rock hard bed and it was horrible! We requested to change rooms, but did not get a chance to switch. Everything else was perfect. The food is not the gourmet or anything, but better than many places. Variety was nice, we ate at each place once. It helped that we tipped at the bars, because we got better service, and stronger drinks. The staff is friendly, and fun! Our room was great, big shower, private balcony. We also had an old-school safe with a key that was annoying. We planned two excursions with the travel people onsite. Both worked out great. We went fishing with the guy just down the beach, Tacho, and he was wonderful, safe (well, safe for Mexico anyways), and helpful. I went for a massage at the spa, and LOVED it! Spa is clean, nice, and relaxing. I got a massage on the beach that was fabulous, and you then have access to the sauna all day. The discotheque was kind of empty most nights, but we danced anyways. The nightlife is nonexistent but we didn't mind at all after drinking and hanging out at the beach all day we didn’t want to go out! Seriously, we had the best vacation and loved the resort!

CRT was excellent! We first visited this facility in 2005 when it was the Copa. Things have definitely improved since then.
1) The food was very good and they had a very good variety of items to chose from.
2) Service was excellent with the front desk, the maids, and the activities team
3) This is not a place to go for beer drinking contests, but it has plenty of activities and things to see (IE: people-watching).
4) The best part was the beach. You can snorkel right off the beach and reach an awesome reef. We saw hundreds of fish, a sea cucumber, a turle, and spiny urchins.

Also, take some cookies into the water and feed the fish as you walk in.

This was our first time at the CRT and we travelled with my partners parents. We're in our 40's and they are in there 70's. After a long day of travelling we were greeted with some bad news, they didn't have room for us at the CRT so we were sent to their sister resort the Catalonia Maroma. William whom greeted us at CRT assured us it would only be for one night and he was extermely apologetic. To make a long story short the Maroma was not the same caliber of hotel as the CRT and we'll save that for another review. The next day we headed back to the CRT and we were compensated very nicely with an upgrade to two honeymoon suites, 45 min. massages, fruit and champgne in the room. I can't compliment the staff at this hotel enough, but a special mention definitely goes out to William who made our stay very memorable. During out two week stay we were contacted approx. three times to ensure we were enjoying our stay. The staff here go out of there way to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. CRT is a well oiled facility!!! The beach is one of the nicest I've seen and I have been on some of the top beaches in the world. The hotel is clean and the cleaning staff go above and beyond...(i.e. we saw the staff dusting the banisters that wind through the mangroves) The food was outstanding even the room service was great, the entertainment staff were always smiling no matter what. Thank you Jose, Laly and Martin. The smoothie bar, (Ma Loo) was very good. The spa was absolutely wonderful we had our free massages and loved it so much that we indulged ourselves in a reflexology treatment. The reflexology was devine, both my partner and I found it more enjoyable than the massage...so check out the Spa it's a must!! The nightly entertainment was average but after a few margaritas everything was outstanding. Night life wise, things died down after 10:30 but we were okay with that, we picked this hotel because of it's quietness. There was a vendor from Coco Bongo who was there daily willing to shuttle you to one of the local night clubs in Playa del Carmen if you wanted to go and party. Lastly do not let the negative reviews deter you from trying CRT. We were all very happy with our choice and we would return in a heartbeat.

WONDERFUL vacation.

No bugs, no problem with loud entertainment. There's beach volleyball, water aerobics, bingo. A pool table in lobby. A stage for night entertainment. Rooms are jungle view with a short stone walk to the beach.

No reservations needed at any restaurants. Waitress service at beach and pool. FOOD was varied, fresh. Once the buffet trays started looked 1/2 full, someone was bringing out a fresh tray.

All the water is osmosis filtered although I would suggest using their bottled water. 2 big bottles were left in washroom. A mini fridge had more. Constantly restocked.

Most are 35-55 years old. Probably too quiet for 20 year olds who wanted to party. Many young couples were on their honeymoon though. They could get romantic canopied beds in special suites.

Definitely would go back.

We just returned from CRT and had an amazing time! It was our first AI experience and we were blown away.

It did take a awhile to get there after landing in Cancun about 7pm. We booked the Olympus transfer with the package through Travelocity. There were 3 other stops so we didn't get to the hotel until 9pm. They had drinks and towels waiting for us and check in went as smooth as can be. I emailed our room request a few days earlier, a King bed on a higher floor, and both requests were honored, which was surprising to me considering how late we checked in.

The room was spotless, we just had a regular room in the 3rd building, Brisa. I loved the location because we were halfway to the beach and halfway to the lobby. The jungle path was gorgeous, a pleasure to walk up and down. There were robes and slippers in the room, which was a really nice touch. The housekeeping staff did an amazing job, everything was so clean and every request was quickly fulfilled. Also, apparently upon check-in my boyfriend notified the front desk that the trip was to celebrate my birthday, the next day they had sent a cake and bottle of sparkling wine to our room, so nice!

We were able to catch dinner at the Terrace, the Tapas lounge and it was an incredible first meal, the grouper was fantastic! All of the meals we had were excellent, my favorite was the Mahi-Mahi at La Selva, the Main restaurant in the lobby. Breakfast and Lunch Buffets were great with lots of options, I loved the fact that there was always an abundance of fresh fruit available. I mostly ate guacamole and chips for lunch it was so good! The Deli/Pizza was also very good for made to order sandwiches and pizza. We had room service once and it was quick and great for snacking.

The following day we were finally able to see everything in the daylight and it was spectacular. I know it's been said before, but the beach is crazy amazing. Powder sand, turquoise water, truly an awesome sight. I was a bit worried about chair situation since it seems to be an area of frustration for some guests, but honestly we had no issues. We were able to find spots at the beach and by the pool everyday and we are not morning people, so we weren't at the beach/pool until 10 or 11. We never doubled up by "reserving" chairs in both places, I think that may lead to some of the problems, if everyone is kind and courteous and just uses what they need at the time, I think it would help the situation. I thought occupancy must've been way down since we were so luck with the chairs, but we asked upon check out at it was at 90% the whole time.

The Entertainment staff was fun, they were good at getting people involved, but left you alone if you didn't want to participate. We only caught one show, the Flamenco show, which was great! The Lobby and Beach bar were pretty dead past 10, but it was easier to get a drink that way :) We went to the disco and were the only ones there, so we decided to dance like fools, which was actually really fun! They played great music!

We left the resort once to go to Tulum, using the collectivo, public transportation. It was easy and cheap to use and we waited no more than 5 minutes each way also the drivers were very helpful and nice. We only spent 200 pesos on the excursion, which I think is well below what tour companies would charge.

Overall I have nothing negative I can say about the trip. CRTs attention to detail is outstanding from the towel animals to passed fruit skewers by the pool in late afternoon. Service was amazing we really felt very welcome and everyone is so nice and accommodating. Our drinks were never empty and they never expected a tip, we did tip of course and they definitely deserve it. We will definitely make a return trip as soon as possible!

Thanks to CRT and all who posted reviews that helped us make the decision, it was an unforgettable experience!

We stayed 3/17-3/21, weather was a little iffy when we got there, glorious Thu/Fri, windy cloudy on Saturday til about 1030am and then just windy and sunny/warm. Waves were intense on Saturday, lots of fun in them and watching others get plowed over!

Would go back/recommend to others, we probably won't go back as we like to try new places, but wouldn't hesistate to stay at another Catalonia resort in the future if they're anything like this one. We used Cancun Shuttle(private car) to get there. Think it was about $130US, plus tip. No problems other than finding our driver in the pandemonium outside the terminal. Thankfully there were people out there to help guys like us who looked dazed! Didn't keep track of time, as I was too busy trying to learn/refresh my spanish with the driver and closing my eyes at the way traffic was moving. Fast, and furious! Saw many accidents on the way down. Our return was much calmer, our driver was there 1/2hr early, thank god for that, as the line for USAirways was at over 1hr! but we had plenty of time.

The property: Very open reception area, cool towels and drinks upon arrival were a nice touch. We booked a Jr. suite, and were offered the upgrade($25-30/night/person I believe). We didn't do it though. Staff was constantly cleaning and on the go. Was impressed on our last night when we were walking across a bridge the lights in that section went out. We had a quick drink/appetizer at Tapas and when we got out, there were workers with flashlights moving around in the bushes fixing the problem. By the time we got back from the steakhouse everything was lit again. We didn't use the pool at all but it certainly was inviting, as well as the "chill" area. We hit the beach, and like every other resort you'll need to save a chair. usually by 8-830 all the chairs on beach were taken. Didn't notice anyone taking a chair and then not using it..other than trips to eat etc. The stone path was a fav of mine, lots of little critters, soothing music(but not loud at all) and pleasantly relaxing. Took about 5-7 min to walk from beach to building 1. I loved this walk, with all the plants/animals etc, it really got you to slow down , breath and relax.

Rooms: Rooms were cleaned 2x a day. As has been mentioned before, if you don't leave a note with a tip..the money will be there when you get back. You'll need to leave a note each day. Bed did have a topper on it but was still pretty firm. We asked for another one and it finally arrived Friday. Believe the night service does this, so best to ask as soon as you get in your room. We left note for maid on Thursday morning, she did come back at one point to clarify what we wanted and Friday nite turn down service put the topper on, which did help some. Our room did come with a nice bowl of fruit and cold champagne, although we didn't drink the champagne. Bathrooms are EXCELLENT! Was amazed at some of the toiletries they included..even a shoe horn??? (not that you need one for sandals!)If you use a lot of electrical appliances to get ready, you'll probably want to bring some electrical strip, as there was just 1 outlet. Wi-Fi worked really well, once we got password/userid from front desk..it's your room number for both. Another benefit of Jr. Suite, is the balcony is open on side. Also the rooms are quiet, never heard toilets flushing, people talking, doors shutting etc. Not sure if there were folks around us while there, but think the resort was fairly full. Hot water was HOT and plentiful.

Food: Okay this was were we weren't too impressed. Food was good, and we definitely didn't starve just didn't "WOW" us. We tried the Mexican, International, Tapas and Steakhouse. Our fav was the steakhouse, even with the old country music..not a fan..but it actually did work with the atmosphere. We liked the atmosphere of the steakhouse as it was open air, and much quieter than the others..also the food was more to our liking. We did however LOVE the breakfast and lunch buffets. Big variety of food at both and all of it very good tasting. The food wasn't your typical "buffet" like Golden Corral or anything. Many healthy dishes, very little fried or pre-made stuff. Lunch even had sushi.

Entertainment: We entertained ourselves with watching the waves and getting sunburned! We also loved feeding the Angel fish. Bring some bread/fruit from buffet and you'll be amazed. I even got them to take bread bits from mouth!! Animation staff seemed very enthusiastic, but not annoying in any manner. No loud music constantly blaring like at other resorts I've been too. We didn't go to see any of the shows, although by the applause and parts of it we heard they sound pretty entertaining if you're into that kinda thing.

Spa: LOVED IT! Got a80 minute Swedish massage, $100US and a 50 min. mens facial, $75US +tips. Wow what a nice relaxing treat. Felt years younger and even my partner who isn't one for compliments, made mention of how much better my skin looked after the facial. I don't think the hotel promotes this service well. I was shocked that the spa staff never tried a sales pitch on products, and if they had i would probably had bought something as I really enjoyed the facial service I recieved. Had an unrelenting "salesperson" on a cruise last year..kinda ruined the massage I had just received. They really should include a service menu, with prices in the room and on their website imo.

Overall we both really enjoyed this resort. I think they could service their guests better, by giving more specific information about the resort in the in-room guide. I personally hate having to call desk everytime theres a question about a service..especially for things that, imo, most guests are probably going to inquire about..just seems simpler to have it all layed out in the room info book.

If anyone has questions feel free to write me a note and I'll try to answer you if I can!
