“Home 1 day, want to go back!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2009

Catalonia Royal Tulum Jan. 9 - Jan23, 2009. A great holiday at the CRT! Booked our holiday with BCAA in Prince George and used Sunquest Vacations. Excellent connections and everything worked out great. We flew on a Air Transat Airbus A310 and it was slightly cramped, try to get the first class or pay to sit at the emergency exit for more leg room. On the return trip to Vancouver we requested aisle seats which were not so confining!! Food was terrible on the plane. Do not stop at the counters outside the Cancun terminal as they act like they are part of Sunquest but they are just selling timeshares. Avoid them!! We know of someone who stayed too long talking to them and missed their shuttle to their hotel.. Cost them a lot of taxi money to finally get to their hotel!! Reception at the hotel was very fast and efficient. We received a king bed on the second floor which was fine. If I had to do it again I think I would prefer the third floor on the west side of the complex to see the setting sun. Hotel room key card was fun to use as it sometimes took us a few minutes to get into our room but my wife and I had fun trying different card swipeing techniques!! They probably could use some new beds but we survived. The shower was great. Had only warm water one day but oh well!! Food and service for the most part was very good. Had a very dry piece of chicken at the Royal Grill one night but I was putting on too much weight anyway!! Bring your own insulated cups especially for the smoothie bar as their glass washing was a little suspect, looks like they use some sort of chemical!! Beach, pool etc was fantastic. The topless section also added to the romantic aura of the place! Bring lots of US dollar bills as I was tipping with 20 and 50 peso notes to everybody and it can get expensive but they deserve it. I could go on and on but I am sure you will enjoy the CRT. PS. The washrooms at the Vancouver airport were not very clean and they had a little trouble connecting our plane to the ramp. Everybody involved with the winter Olympics should go to Mexico to see how to treat tourists!! I hope our waiters and waitresses and other service people are equal to the task!! Back home in Quesnel at -28 degrees!!

My husband and I and another couple stayed at the CRT for the first time in early December. We have visited six other AI's in Mexico and the D.R. and this is the first time we have considered returning to the same resort.
Loved:
The beach is beautiful. Soft sand, easy to walk into the water, and fun when the surf picks up too. There are a few patches of rock here and there, but they are easy to see when the water isnt too rough, so easy to avoid. Do watch out if the waves are rough: my friend landed unexpectedly on the coral while out floating one day.
We loved the "couples only" set up, and we hope the price doesnt jump too much before we can book again.
We really enjoyed the snack/pizza area. The burgers and pizza really are great, and this is the best place in the resort to get things "special order."
The staff is really friendly and efficient. Pool and beach service was the fastest we have ever experienced. The resort is smaller, and we dont think it was too full, so I am sure that helped speed things up.
It is great that they offer the restaurants without reservations, so you can walk in when you are ready. We like to eat early, so the restaurants were mostly deserted when we ate between 6 and 7 oclock. We did see patrons waiting for seats one evening at the italian later in the evening, but this is understandable considering they dont have very many tables available in the Steak/Italian restaurant.

We really think that the hotel should reconsider having a buffet available in the evening. The menus in each restaurant are a bit limited, and on other trips we have always enjoyed cruising the buffet for after dinner snacks, and grazing through the dessert selections. Only the International Restaurant has a small dessert buffet, and the wait staff was quite confused when we only wanted a table so that we could sample some desserts. Maybe the Sports Bar that is opening soon will have a more casual option for the evening.

The resort is very quiet in the early morning, and one other change we would recommend is a 24 hour bar, primarily so you could get fresh coffee early in the morning. They set up a carafe and some pastries in the lobby area between 6 and 7 am, and there is coffee makers in the room, but a place down by the beach to get some coffee or juice in the early morning would be wonderful. We would hike up to the lobby, get a cup of coffee, and walk all the way back down to the beach. Our friends had good luck with room service for coffee on two mornings, but then they were told that coffee wasnt a room service option, without ordering food.

Our transfer left at 6:45 am on the day we left, so the buffet wasnt open yet for breakfast, and all that was available that early from room service was sandwiches.

My friends and I are the type of travellers who like one or two "fancy" meals, but prefer to eat in a more casual atmosphere most of the time. That is the reason we have not visited "Couples only" resorts before. Usually they are too upscale for our tastes. Hopefully the CRT will find a happy medium. The size and location of the resort are perfect. The fact that most of the other resorts in Xpu-ha bay have closed makes for a very private beach experience. You can walk a fair amount each way down the beach without encountering too many people at all.

We took only one excursion, with Edventure Tours. We had a "customized" tour just for us, with a private driver. We went to Tulum, Coba, and to Sam's Club, so my friend could by some Don Julio Real tequila. It was a great trip, and we liked doing things at our own pace.

To sum up: No one in our group went hungry (or thirsty), no one had any stomach issues, nothing was stolen, our rooms were clean, comfortable, roomy, and things worked. No bad service anywhere, and it was usually particularly good service. I would recommend a direct transfer from Cancun, it is a bit of a drive from the airport, and you wouldnt want to be stopping at all of the other resorts along the way to drop off other travellers. We look forward to returning again as soon as we can.

We stayed at the CRT from Jan. 10th -19th. The resort is an hour and 10 minutes from the airport, a nice way to see Mexico. Upon entering the resort, we were greeted with glasses of champaine, and smiles from the front desk staff. I cannot say enough about them. They were so helpful, friendly and accomadating. The hotel lobby and grounds are beautiful, and very well maintained. .The staff all work very hard, and were all very friendly. They keep the walk ways swept an hosed, and the whole grounds very clean. Although not needed, bring dollar bills for tips. They deserve it!!!
Room was comfortable and clean. They left "towell art" several days, one which included several real flowers on it for decoration. There was always hot water in the shower. They stocked the fridge every day.
The beach was perfect!! Beautiful!! There was not enough coral to complain about. A perfectly smooth soft sandy bottom with an ocassional coral rock. Its expected to have SOME coral. You could walk for miles in either direction on the beach. There was always a spot down the beach if you prefered a little privacy. It was fun feeding the fish a bun from the buffet. The beach staff were fun, and not pushy at all. They work so hard. Yoga on the beach every day was awesome. Water arobics in the ocean was so refreshing. Beach waitress was excellent and the smoothie bar a great touch. Try the baby. mmmmmmm. The beach photographers were also awesome. The pictures turn out wonderful!!
The food was great. If anyone went hungry it was their own fault. I dont understand why anyone would complain because there was not an evening buffet. After all....how many buffets a day do you need?? I thought both the breakfast and lunch buffets were great. If you couldnt find SOMETHING in them you liked..........something is wrong. The terrace was fun, relaxing and very interesting appetizers, and beautifully presented. That was one of my favorites. The Mexican was one of my least favorites, but it didnt matter. You certainly wont go hungry because you do not like one restaurant. You do not need reservations at any of them. Try the royal salad. excellent!! Room service is limited, but how often do you eat in the room. We did order breakfast a couple times, just because we wanted a lazy morning.
The location of the hotel was perfect. a 15-20 minute "free" shuttle ride to playa del carmen. Fun to see!!! Several cenotes just down the highway, and about an hour 1/2 ride to coba.
Sophie that arranges the tours in the lobby was great. The coba tour ( the full tour) was very nice and informative. You also get to swim in a cenote after the tour. Make sure you try a cenote if you are into nature and swimming. So interesting and very refreshing.
All in all I was very satisfied and would reccommend it to anyone. We slept with the patio door open every night, and I already miss waking up to the sounds of the birds in the jungle. I miss watching the iguanas and gekos and all the other wildlife in the jungle. I would definetly go back!!

My wife and I stayed at the CRT Jan. 14-18. We have traveled to many all-inclusives in this area including Iberostar, Riu, and Barcelo. This resort by far had the best food and the best beach.
The rooms are a bit plain, but we found the beds comfortable, the TV worked, and so did the plumbing. The shower head was my only criticism and needed replacement, but I did not complain so my bad. In spite of some rainy and cloudy and unseasonably cool weather we still had a great time. We did not leave the property as we were there to chill out. Staff quality is great and everyone is helpful. Some extended waits for a drink at the poolside bar can be expected. The duck sandwich at the snack bar is very good! Mostly european and Canadian guests, with food styled to please europeans. We liked it, but heard other Americans whining - wow what a surprise. We wil be going back for sure!!!

Having previously stayed at a Catalonia property, we expected to find a well-run resort with top notch staff and service. The Royal Tulum far exceeded our very high expectations and was simply the finest resort we have ever visited.

GETTING THERE: We booked the entire trip through Jet Blue Getaways. We have always before used online travel sites, but the big sites' (Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity) "specials" all consisted of several stops or very long (in one case 11 hours!!!) layovers, which would waste two entire travel days. The Jet Blue representative was aware of our budget and made it very easy to get nonstop flights both ways, transportation to and from hotel and airport and actually called us when we arrived to make certain that everything went as planned. We actually came in under budget--and were upgraded from a room to a Jr. Suite. We've never had such an easy time booking a trip and will likely use this company in the future.

ARRIVAL: After surviving the hoard of timeshare sellers and "taxi drivers" who regularly accost arrivals at Cancun airport, we were escorted to a van and taken to our hotel, where we were greeted with cold drinks and cool washcloths by the welcoming staff in the very lovely lobby. Check in was quick and our luggage was in our suite by the time we arrived. We were very pleased with the amenities and loved the private terrace, which looked out on the 'jungle', where soft music was playing--a perfect counterpoint to the calls of the birds outside. Sitting on the terrace was so lovely and relaxing that we could easily have spent most of our time there.

THE BEACH: One of the loveliest and widest in the Mexican Caribbean. Great reef offshore with interesting visuals for snorkelers, towels and lounge chairs plentiful, and 'beach service' for those too relaxed to walk a few yards to get their own drinks or snacks. There is a juice/smoothie bar on one end of the beach, a snack bar on the other. One does not have to go far for pampering.

POOLS AND HOT TUBS: All immaculate, but did not see much use during our stay...many sunbathers around the pools in lounge chairs; we chose to take advantage of the "beds" with cushions and curtains--brought books, stretched out and had a cozy nap in the sunshine.

FOOD: Excellent selection and served at proper temperature. We loved the fact that we could order a la carte at both breakfast and at the restaurant of our choice for dinner. No waiting, none of that silly "make reservations several days in advance" nonsense. Food and service were consistently good...much better than one expects at an all-inclusive.

STAFF (important--please read): A reviewer mentioned having had his credit card compromised while at the resort. This is OUR experience with the honesty of the staff. One evening, we carelessly left for dinner without locking the safe--the key was still in the lock when we left. We did not know this at the time, but when we arrived back at the room, there was a call from the front desk telling us that the housekeeper (Esmeralda) had noticed this during turn-down service, locked the safe (which contained all of our valuables and most of our cash) and immediately brought this to the attention of the manager. We were gratified by her honesty and her protection of our valuables (remember--the hotel workers make in one week what most Americans spend on a trip to Starbucks!! I imagine that many people could be tempted by an opportunity such as an unlocked safe). We gave Esmeralda a 'thank you' envelope for her diligence and spoke to the manager about our gratitude to her.

THE PROPERTY: Simply magnificent, perfectly designed for privacy and maximum beauty. The path from the main lobby to the ocean gives one the feeling of walking an ancient jungle path, yet one feels absolutely safe...we walked it several times daily, and always were greeted by one or more hotel employees "strolling" the pathway. Wonderful plants and flowers growing in profusion, a wooden bridge crossing a cenote filled with fish, iguanas basking on a warm and sunny surface, tropical birds, the occasional squirrel, and lovely soft music to accentuate the experience. There are two sweet dogs, Bingo and Vivienne, who live nearby and often visit the beach area. Guests sometimes share a bit of food with them and are rewarded with doggie smiles and wags.

SLIGHT NEGATIVES: The occasional loud guest who had had too much to drink and thought that it was acceptable to throw a beer can or paper cup into the impeccably maintained gardens; room key cards that often took several attempts to open the door (a common problem there--caused by humidity, perhaps?), the VERY loud entertainment--we were close to the 'theatre' and heard the music nightly, while we would have preferred to sit quietly on our terrace and listen to the sounds of the night birds.

CONCLUSION: We returned home last night and are already looking forward to our next visit to the Catalonia Royal Tulum. The property is still being renovated, and we are sure that our 99% perfect vacation will become 100% perfect when we return to our favorite vacation spot.

PS: Please tip the staff and tip well. No, it is not required...simply a human kindness to people who make very little money and will likely never be able to afford the type of vacation that they are instrumental in providing to their guests.

  • Liked — Natural beauty all around--butterflies in the open lobby in the evening made it magical there.
  • Disliked — Slight problem with room key cards.

We just got back from this hotel and we only had 2 disapointments:
1. NO Swim-up bar
2. NO buffet at night - only a la carte!

No swim up bar wasn't the biggest thing because they had waitresses coming around to get drinks for you.

Being a fussy eater, I was very disappointed that there wasn't a buffet in the evening. It was the only hotel we've ever stayed at that DIDN'T have a buffet at night and we will definatley look for a hotel that has one next time. It's nice to have the option of a la carte (and some people love a la carte) but we are definately more buffet type people. The food was pretty good. We've had better, but we can't complain. The hotel was very clean and well kept. The beach was the nicest beach we've ever seen. It was like walking on flour! Great beach! Friendly staff. Overall a very nice stay!

One note: for people that have trouble walking or anything, it's quite a long walk from the lobby to the beach and rooms. Lots of walking! Beautiful trail though! Right in the bush!!

Let me start by saying that I have been to many all-inclusives and still haven't found perfection but this resort is as close as I've come.

This is an adults-only resort and the atmosphere is very, very relaxing. Whether it's the lush vegetation surrounding the rooms and pathways or the laid back but friendly staff, it's easy to overlook some of the details that are lacking (which I will bring up in a moment). But first some of the plusses:

1- The food is tremendous. Interestingly, breakfast was a dissappointment which is strange because usually breakfast is my favorite meal at all-inclusives. But lunch was great, and dinner was excellent especially the Tapas Restaurant which is very, very romantic and an experience I have not had at any other all-inclusive hotel. I would highly recommend the Key-Lime martini there.

Another plus is that there is no dinner buffet at this hotel which means you must go to one of the 5 restaurants (Mexican, International, Tapas, Steakhouse & Italian). But the really great part is you don't have to make reservations AND there is no limit on which restaurant you decide to go to.

There is also a snack bar that serves freshly made pizza, hamburgers, sandwiches and even crepes that's open until 2 am.

2- The beach is nice. It is a little rocky in some areas (especially where the waves are a little bigger) so if I were to go again, I would head down to Payless and get me a cheap pair of shoes. That way you won't have to worry about scraping your feet.

3. I also found the service to be pretty good. Again, you will generally find at all-inclusives that the service is not 5 stars. But you do get served drinks on the beach and in the pool area which is nice especially considering there is only one bar in the beach/pool area and the wait there can be 15-20 minutes at times.

Also, the activiites staff does a good job of bringing a fun but not annoying attitude. I guess it depends on your personality, but I have found the activities staff at some hotels to be a little over the top. The staff at Catalonia did a good job of having fun but not forcing you to participate which I found refreshing.

4- I also found the rooms to very nice. Our A/C worked great, we had steaming hot water, lots of towels and they replentished the minibar in the room every day. Also, the room was very modern and just overall very satisfactory.

I won't go into every little detail but just that this is a very good hotel and I will leave some things as a surprise if you do decide to go. With that said, I will give you the skinny on some other things that could be improved:

1- Room service is 24 hrs but it's very limited. I have also found at most all-inclusives, Catalonia Royal included, that the room service portion is nothing compared to what you experience in decent hotels in the USA. Often times it tends to take a very long time to get the food and usually the attitude of the person taking the order is not all that friendly. Not sure why but this has always been the case at every all-inclusive that offers it. Catalonia also does not serve any drinks to your room which means if you want to drink wine with your meal you will have to go out and get it yourself.

2- The 2 jacuzzies they have mostly depend on the warmth of the sun to be hot. In other words, they are not true jacuzzies and if you are there when it's cloudy in January it doesn't seem very warm. They only heat the jacuzzies to about 90 Fahrenheit.

3- The room cards they give you to get into the rooms are horrible. We seriously had to sit there and put the dang card in anywhere from 10 to 30 times before the green light would flash. A lot of other couples were having the same problem.

4- Besides being rocky, the beach was a little dirty and by dirty I mean there seemed to be a lot more trash that washes up (and wasn't cleaned) than other hotels I have been to. Again, this shouldn't be a dealbreaker but it is an area where the hotel could improve.

5- I liked the selection on the drinks but at the same time the beer was very watered-down and so were a lot of the other drinks. This shouldn't be a deal breaker either but it just means that it takes a lot longer to get your buzz going.

But again, overall, a very good hotel. Very clean (except parts of the beach), lots of vegetation, a lot of things to do and great food. That's why even with some room for improvement, Catalonia Royal is getting 5 stars and I would return.
