“Beautiful, Romantic, and Relaxing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

This resort is truly an oasis. My husband took our honeymoon here June 23-30. If going on a vacation to the Cancun area I highly recommend coming here or anywhere south of Playa Del Carmen, especially if you are looking for the best beaches in the area (according to the locals) and also some peace, quiet, and relaxation. Anything you want to do you can arrange even if the hotel doesn't seem to have many things "included." You can easily get to any activities in the area. My husband and I did deep sea fishing at Marina Del Cid, Scuba Diving at Bahia Divers (which is literally a 100 yard walk down the beach from the hotel!), the Mayan Coba Excursion with Altournative, and horse back riding at Maroma Beach.

The food was excellent at all restaurants, though we recommend staying AWAY from the Lobster dinner, that got both me and my husband sick for 12 hours, and we still had to pay extra for it.

The servers and people that work there are so happy and helpful! If looking for someone who is fun to talk to and a great server ask for Fernando at breakfast or at the lunch buffet, he is great! Just a note for Americans, they don't accept American dollars in the gift shop or at the concierge, but the servers and bartenders and drivers do appreciate American dollars as tips!

The hotel in general has an amazing atmosphere, its like walking in a jungle all the way through to your room, look out for some jungle reptiles and animals too! The beach is beautiful and wide open, the hotel is not near any other resorts so there a lot of open space to walk on and swim around. Its easy to go snorkling during the day and so worth it. The pool is very nice as well with lots of places to sit and relax, our favorite part was the three different temp. hot tubs that overlook the beach. The staff also really stays out of the way and is very honest and trustworthy, we left our safe open once by accident when we were away, we got back to find a note saying the turn down service had locked the safe for our safety and we had to call security to get it unlocked, nothing was gone.

The rooms are very nice no matter what level you choose. A very comfortable king sized bed and your room is cleaned immaculately every day when you leave. The hotel in general is very clean.

We think this is a great resort and highly recommend it to honeymooners, vacationers, and adventurers alike!

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the beach and pool are better so you don't have to walk as far.

This place is FANTASTIC! I had my best vacation ever! We read the reviews and some people wrote discouraging things about Vera Club and the Italians, BOY WE'RE THEY WRONG! The Vera Club rec directors welcomed me and a bunch of other English speaking guys. We played volleyball and they even included me in their soccer games. The Italians were fantastic, someone said that they were unfriendly, totally not, they don't speak English, but if you try you can communicate.
The resort was awesome! The service was top of the line, they try to learn your name, and they try to teach you how to speak in Spanish. The food was the best I have had, they do cater to the Italians and that is a great thing, because they do know how to cook! The Mexican food was traditional and great!
The beach was so so beautiful. With the other three resorts abandon, it is like a three mile private beach. The resorts were never repaired after Hurricane Wilma in 2005. The one resort is like a ghost town, kinda cool if you are into Blair Witch. :-)
Rooms were very very nice. We weren't in our room much, we headed to beach at 8am and did not comeback to room til 6pm. Shower and head out to dinner, then back to sleep.
Activities! If you are into sports and fitness, this place is great. They run two sessions of volleyball daily, they do bocci, horseshoes, darts, soccer, water zumba, and salsa dance lessons. We only went to one show, the Elvis tribute, let me put it this way, don't miss this show, very entertaining.
Finally, I want to thank the Vera Club dudes, they made my vacation so so much FUN! I am putting their picture on this to see. If you see them tell them Roberto Tres said Hi!

I gave this resort 5 stars, because it really is a wonderful place! However, one small thing would make it absolutely perfect. Too many people are smoking everywhere and it would be great to create a designated smoking area and ban smoking from bars, in the lobby and around the pool.
This is our third visit to to this resort and again we loved the great service (David and Fernando you were amazing!), the smiling helpful staff and the perfect location on the beach. There were fun activities to enjoy the outdoors, like water "gym", guacamole making, horseshoe pitching, bocce ball tournaments, dance classes, spanish lessons and lots more. The place is squeeky clean and the housekeeping staff ought to be commended for taking the time to make those fun animals out of towels. We will be back!

My husband and I just returned from a 6-day stay (June 24 - June 29, 2012) at the Catalonia Royal Tulum. I can describe the entire trip in one word, AMAZING! The resort is absolutely beautiful and well-maintained. The rooms are very clean and the staff very friendly. The food was 5-star all the way. And the beach was so beautiful. There's a coral reef about 80 yards from the beach which is great for snorkeling. Or you can walk in either direction and just enjoy the scenery. It is truly an amazing resort and we will definitely return. I highly recommend this resort to others.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Brisa 3000 building and it's centrally located so there's a short walk to t...

This was our third time coming to this resort in the last 4 years. We absolutely love this place! The beach, which is our favorite part, is amazing! The snorkeling is incredible at the resort. There's great snorkeling right off the beach and if you swim out to the reefs about a quarter mile out there is even better snorkeling. We saw a couple turtles out there and tons of beautiful fish! Also, I highly recommend taking the public transportation to Akumal which is a short five minute drive. You're guaranteed to see multiple sea turtles there (we saw about 5). I also found a couple sting rays which are really cool! Just don't get too close of course. I highly recommend bringing your own snorkeling gear. That way you don't have to return your equipment in an hour!At least it’s free at the resort. At Akumal, expect to pay $15 per person to rent their snorkeling gear. Not a good deal. Also, we made an awesome investment in purchasing an underwater case for our camera. If you are in to snorkeling and taking pictures, I suggest you do the same! Don’t waste your money on the disposable underwater camera as they are bad quality and restricted to the amount of pictures they can take. And by the time you've developed the photo's you probably spent close to the same price as just buying an underwater case (ours was about $45 and well worth it).

At the CRT most of the staff was awesome! We made friends with some of them! The food was decent. Like most people say, excellent presentation and a little lesser in the taste. But we always found foods we liked and stuck with them most the time. My wife has a sensitive stomach so there were a few times the food didn't sit well with her.

As for the weather, Tropical Storm Debbie hit us pretty hard a few days. We had 2 full days of showers. Some days were really nice with showers and thunder storms all night. But the last couple days we were there we had no rain at all which was nice. Expect to see lightning every night because we did (which we loved to watch)!

One bummer was that the bridge leading to the pool and beach was closed the entire time and probably will be for a while. The only way there is to walk along the service sides of the resort which is not nearly as glamorous as walking through the middle. That was a bummer because that was one of our favorite parts about the resort. But they have to do what they have to do so I can't be too upset about that.

Also we used to love feeding the angel fish that always great you whenever you go in the ocean. Unfortunately they no longer allow that because it can attract barracudas that can hurt people. So we had to be a little sneaky about it and wait till the life guards were gone. It was totally worth it!

If mosquitoes tend to enjoy your blood, then bring some powerful deet repellent (I brought 50 deet). I was really good about putting it on every night before going to dinner and I still managed to get about 8 bites or so.

Be sure to tip often as the workers work hard for them. $1-2 was our usual for things.

We really enjoyed ourselves and will be back for sure!

we just got back from a wonderful 10day vacation, i would go back next week if i could, it was the best beach i have ever seen. the staff was very helful and they worked very hard keeping the place beautiful. i agree with Mazagrewp the Italians thought they owned the place, that is my only complaint.

Room Tip: the middle buildings are quieter.

Really wanted to love this place. It has so much going for it but one very big issue. If you like to lay on the beach or around the pool listening to nothing but the surf and only being interrupted by the waitress coming to take your drink order then this is not the place for you.

The Bad
The noise starts around 10 am with the loudspeaker by the pool advertising stretching for several minutes, if that weren't annoying enough the Italian Veraclub and hotel animation employees go around shouting for you to join it. This continues about every 30-45 minutes until lunch when there is a small break and then until about 5 or 6 in the evening. This along with the loud music (and they play the same songs everyday!) really doesn't allow for much relaxing.

Furthermore, if you've made the mistake of setting up near the pool on waterpolo day then your in trouble. No apologies are made as the employees try to force a game. The entire section of chairs near the pool were pretty much vacated else you would splashed or hit in the head with a ball. Never mind all of the spilled drinks. I don't think that the enjoyment of the veraclub and hotel animation employees should come at the expense of 15-20 guests who wanted no part of the activity.

The night life is loud and not very good. On the nights when they have a pool party it can be very loud if you are in buildings 5 or 6.

The Good
This is probably one the most beautiful beaches in Mexico. Powdery white sand and calm turquoise blue water. Bring snorkels because you can see a lot of fish if you just go about 10 feet south of the resort. The beach is very walkable and there is only one other hotel along the whole strip. Found out from an employee that the cenotes are very unstable in the area and the other resorts have been abandoned.

The grounds are beautiful and there are a lot animals to see when walking to the lobby. The rooms are average but who really spends a great deal of time in the room. It is maybe a 5 minute walk from the last building to the lobby, it can be a bit slippery if there is rain.

The restaurants were ok. The best were probably the Mexican and buffet. The Grill was pretty disappointing and you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes at the Tapas restaurant. The staff everywhere (excluding the animation and veraclub staff) were excellent! They really made an effort to make sure you had everything you needed. Especially Carlos who works breakfast and lunch who greeted you everyday with a smile and hi-five whether or not you were seated in his section. The entire staff who worked at the Margarita bar in the lobby were excellent. So please tip, 10 or 20 pesos is not much to ask.

If not for the noise and annoyance created by the animation and veraclub staff we would probably be back. But we like to relax and get away from all the noise and hubbub of daily life.
