“The Perfect Place for Those Who Like Hidden Gems”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

We have just returned from a week in this wonderful place. The room was big and spacious with a patio and beautiful deck chairs out the back door facing the playa. Perfect for morning coffee and the delicious coffee cake that accompanied it. We had great fun using the cruiser bikes to tour Xcalak and the road north. Kayaking, snorkeling, bone fishing, manatee watching and lots of relaxation filled our days... the evenings were spent under a brilliant night sky with constellations I've never seen before.

Eduardo and everyone at Tierra Maya made us feel like we were part of the family. We met new friends from Norway and hope to keep the connections we made there ongoing. The tacos, tamales, shrimp civeche, and the chile relleno were great. Food was definitely a high light! Getting there from Cancun was a long drive. When we come back, we will rent our own car.

Thank you so much for one of best vacations we've ever had!!

Room Tip: The refrigerator was a great benefit for the leftover chocolate cake from dessert!

We have only just left Xcalack and Tierra Maya this morning, but would like to write while it is still fresh in my mind! I highly recommend this place to stay. From the minute we arrived, the hotel manager Eduardo made us feel so welcome and went out of his way to help us out.
Our room was exceptionally clean and roomy and deorated very nicely! This may sound weird but the bedding and towels were the best smelling linnen i think I"ve ever smelt! :D The beds were super comfortable too! There were fly screens on all the doors and windows, so sleeping with them open with the lovely sea breeze was amazing. The views from our balcony were lovely and the beach right at your doorstep with fine white sands is a bonus too!
The hotel is a little bit out of town, which is part of what makes this place so special, and free bikes are provided for the easy ride into town. You come to this place to relax... don't expect crazy party or happening place - Go to Cancun if that's what you're looking for!

Xcalak - 400 people (mas o menos) - is a fishing village that envelopes u in its slow pace and easy life. Tierra Maya is a short bike ride or 20 minute walk from the village. Bikes provided but if u ride into town for dinner must have headlamps - it is crazy dark!! Seaside palapas are spacious w simple traditional Yucatan decor ! Small beach and long dock leading to turquoise swimming spot front the property. Eduardo is helpful and cheerful. Verify what is included in continental breakfast so not surprised by extra charge! Thanks to Lovely staff - Carla and Jolanda and Ernesto!

A must do thing in the hotel: take the kayak, paddle out, bind the kayak at the buoyant, swim with thousands of fishes and snorkelling around the big coral just in front of the hotel beach! The best experience in life! Worth all the price and efforts to come.

And don't miss the nice Mexican food in the restaurant

We stayed at Hotel Tierra Maya for 10 days and really enjoyed ourselves! The small, quaint hotel right on the Caribbean Sea was exactly what we were looking for. We chose Hotel Tierra Maya over other hotels in the area because of the 'freedom' guests have in their own vacation (turned off others because of reviews from guests feeling obligated to do what the owners wanted them to do). Never once did we feel obligated to do things for the sake of the owners. We really enjoyed the kayak and bike usage, the basically private beach, and the laid back vibe of the staff. It was also great to know that if we had any questions, Eduardo and staff where always there to help. The food in the restaurant was also very good. Also, the proximity to town compared to other hotels/Inn's in the area was ideal (only 2.5 km north of town, an easy bike ride). I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a very relaxing vacation, in a quaint hotel.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the luxury room (fridge was very nice to have)

We love Eduardo ! We like his relaxed style when he cooks lobster, probably the best lobster in the world, we like his surprising style when he mixes in the fastest way possible the greatest margaritas around Xcalak and last but not least we adore the perfect style that he has when he takes care of the guests' wishes !
Thank you Eduardo and we hope to see you again !
For all who want to got to Tierra Maya, we advise them to take a walk under the moonlight on the quay in front of the hotel. Feel the warm breeze coming from the Caribbean see, listen to the sound of the waves and forget about your troubles with a good rum.
We will certainly come back very soon.
From the three young guys !

This is the third time we have stayed at the Tierra Maya over the past few years. We came here exclusively to fly fish and were not disappointed. Ove the coarse of a week we caught many bonefish (nice size), quite a few baby tarpon and some snook. We did hunt for permit, got some shots but did not land any (next time). Anyways, Everisto is a good guide and Tierra Maya is the place to stay. Eduardo does an excellent job providing excellent service, and the food is great. I will be back as soon as I can get some time off. This place is great!

Room Tip: get the upgraded luxury room, well worth it
