“Small, cozy, hotel with wonderful atmosphere, great breakfast and helpful staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2011

We stayed in this hotel for three nights and really enjoyed the atmosphere. It is small but cozy and well cared for. Our room on the second floor was beautifully decorated. The breakfast was extensive and served on a lovely terrace beside the garden courtyard. There is a terrific restaurant nearby that had the best food we ate in Valladolid. The only downside was the early morning wake-up call of the roosters! Earplugs would be handy.

We recently stayed at Casa Quetzal and it is a very nice facility. The grounds are quite beautiful with a small pool and lush gardens. The room was a nice size and very clean. We have stayed in many hotels in the Yucatan and the main reason we stayed at this hotel was that it was small and off the main square so we assumed it would be nice and quiet. Unfortunately, the hotel is situated right next to a neighbor who raises chickens and the rooster start crowing at 4 am and never stopped. Also the hotel is right across the street from the beautiful monastery which is a must see. At night , the monastery has dogs in the yard probably for security but they unfortunately barked incessantly until past midnight. This is a really nice new place but for a quiet night's sleep, I'd look elsewhere.

The first thing you notice is the beautiful courtyard with the great plants and pool. The pool was too cold even for my young kids (ages 8 and 9) so it's more ornamental than functional. Perhaps if it was 100 degrees, one might go swimming but it was only in the 70s when we were there. The location is perfect. It's a 10 minute walk from the downtown square, which is both easy and safe. The breakfasts were great too! So why am I only giving 3 stars? First, the house next to the Casa Quetzal has roosters, which crow every morning starting at 4:30 AM. Since the Casa Quetzal has shutters (not windows), the noise comes into your room. In addition, the stray dogs (common in Mexico) bark next door for 15+ hours per day. If you live on a farm and are used to these sounds, you might be able to sleep through it. If you're a light sleeper, it's tough to get up at 4:30 AM. Lastly, we had some difficulties I would chalk up to inexperienced staff. Our family of four had requested a larger room with an extra bed. However, the staff had assigned us a room with a single king bed. Either they didn't read or didn't understand the instructions on our reservations, and our kids had to sleep on the floor the first night (we were moved the second night). As another example of inexperienced staff, we asked the receptionist to directions to a nearby cenote, but she couldn't remember the name or directions. It seems pretty basic that a receptionist should be able to know directions to popular tourist spots.

I stayed for 1 night at Casa Quetzel with by boyfriend during a road trip through the Yucatan in May 2010. It was a cute little place that is very deceiving from the front. We were able to park out front for free. We walked inside to this cute little oasis of a courtyard with lots of big trees and hanging vines. There was a terra cotta fountain and a pool- not clean enough to swim in though unfortunately. We ordered lunch from the hotel menu - a local restaurant cooks and delivers it and its quite good healthy fare. The rooms were clean but lots of gnats that buzzed in your ear at night. No A/C but a very strong fan. The local sounds do permeate the inner courtyard- barking dogs, roosters, but that added to the charm for us- others may find that annoying. The location of the hotel was okay. It was a bit far from the main square, which we drove to on our way out of town. Definitely not within walking distance to the main square. However, there was a cathedral right around the corner from us that we visited. We were the only tourists in this area because it was set away from the main attraction, so it was nice to mix with the locals and see how they live out their daily lives. It was a lively little area with a small park, locals playing football (soccer), little cafes, bodegas, etc. The hotel itself is difficult to find because the streets are not easy to navigate so keep that in mind when looking for this place. Overall, a cute little place to stay in Valladolid.

If you want traditional atmosphere with all the comforts, but no hassle, this is the place. A very upmarket B&B calling itself a 'boutique hotel,' it is expensive, but worth the price. The breakfast is very good, but ought to be included in he price not an extra. The swimming pool is very small, really a dip pool. The garden is lovely. The mosquitoes are ferocious and we used the A/C to try and eliminate as many as we could. I think you would have the mosquitoes anywhere you stayed.

Best service we had during our 8 weeks travel from Canada to Mexico. Our exprience: Excellent staff and individual service, very nicely furnished rooms, beautiful garden and a refreshing pool, best breakfast we had. After one day we prolonged our stay by two further nights and adapted our travel. Valladolid is fantastic to reach Maya ruins between Tulum and Uxmal. We recommend this hotel to everybody.

Nice hotel, with nice airconditioned rooms, pool was dirty with lots of leaves in it. The hotel was hard to find, and further away from the mainstreet then we expected. (10 min walk).
We thought the costs for a standard room were pretty high. If you want to go to Chitzen Itza, this is only a 30 km drive away.
