Nicest hotel in town, but not a lot of choices. This is defiinitely a 3rd world experience.
Hotel is located on the town square. Poverty is very evident. The town square was lined with vendors begging you to buy. The most disturbing thing was a girl who was probably no more than 4 or 5 trying to get me to buy peanuts from her in front of the hotel. When I walked past she followed me and started “pawing at me” from behind. I later learned from someone at the hotel that in all likelihood she was trying to lift my wallet. Very very sad. Once you got off the main streets, the areas were definitely 3rd world…i.e. starving animals, houses with no windows and dirt floors. In front the main church, (directly across from the hotel) the town’s severly handicapped (the blind, cerebral palsy, etc.) were brought to beg. There were probably 10 people begging outside the church.
This is about 20 miles to the pyramids, but inside the pyramid grounds, the government has let probably 500 street vendors come in.
The hotel restaurant was very good, and reasonable. The hotel had a beautiful pool and courtyard. Parts of the hotel were 400+ years old as this is the second oldest city in Mexico.
This is the "real" Mexico. If you aren't prepared to have your "eyes opened" stay in Cancun or Cozumel. This hotel was safe, but all around were signs of extreme poverty. I would not have gone outside the hotel at night though.
