While travelling through central America in Spring of 2005, my husband and I stayed at a rare gem of accommodations, near the popular Mayan ruins of Uxmal, in central Yucatan, Mexico. In the charming and authentic Mayan village of Santa Elena, this Bed & Breakfast is operated by the owners, an American ex-pat married to a Mayan Indian, fluent in English, Spanish and Mayan, who also live on site and oversee every facet of service. The rooms were spotless and stunningly decorated with finely crafted Mexican and Mayan artwork, and the ample breakfast was homemade, from the breads to the fresh fruit and juices made from fruit trees on the property. On a trip to the Yucatan to see the ruins, we found a wonderful little B&B very near Uxmal on the Ruta Puuc in Yucatan, Mexico. The Flycatcher Inn is owned by a "displaced American" as Kris calls herself, and her super husband, Santiago. The 4 rooms are spotless and cozy surrounded by tropical vegetation in the tiny Mayan village of Santa Elena. Kris and San knock themselves out to be sure everyone's taken care of! What a delightful find in the middle of the "jungle"! :) I gave it 4 stars because they don't have a/c, but how could you hear the jungle noises with a/c on?? :)
