“This place is just fantastic!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2008

I just have to inform you about this place. Along a beautiful coastline with some great diving opportunities and an impressive coral reef you'll find the ecohotel Maya Luna.

The cosy hotel is owned by Carolien and Jan from Holland and they also run this beautiful restaurant. Their cabana's with traditional palapa's offer perfect privacy, their main terrace is lovely for reading, having the best guacomole in life, for chatting or just sitting while enjoying te view.

I've spent over a week at their place and would have stayed longer if I could. It was great for me, as I left with a lot of energy after a bit of relaxing, reading and wondering around. And it was great for my partner who discovered the village, nature, the Maya ruins close by and for diving.

I think it's amazing how they and Maya Luna recovered so well from hurricane Dean. Even the garden with bougainvilla's, palms and bananatrees is looking fine already.

  • Liked — the view, the food, the relaxing and still interesting surroundings, the owners
  • Disliked — there are some little things that remind of Dean, like a missing light next to one of the beds

We spent 2 days in a lovely cabaña on the beach. It was just restored after the demolition by hurricane Dean, some 3 month earlier. It was obvious that the owners have worked very hard to accomplice that. I hope for them that their fantastic garden ( I have only seen pictures) will grow back very soon. Then it is absolutely Heaven on Earth. I enjoyed very much watching over the sea and just relaxing.
Yes, nice place, nice people.

We spent two days at the Mayaluna on our trip thru Mexico. (Honeymoon!) While we were there reconstruction was still going on after hurricane Dean. Despite the reconstruction Mayalune is on its way back to becoming a true paradise again!
We enjoyed the best food we had for 3 weeks of Mexico. The studio's on the beach are really nice, having 2 stories! A big comfortable cosy room with a sun/moon terrace on top. Tip! Go up to the moon terrace at night and enjoy the incredible sky full of stars.
Didn't had the change to see the reef, should be very nice. One of the many reasons to come back again.

Our bungalow at the Maya Luna was lovely - probably the best accommodation we had in Mexico. It had been lovingly restored post-hurricane, and had a delightful sun terrace on top.

The owner was very welcoming and helpful. She booked us on a snorkelling trip and showed us books about the local wildlife. The Maya Luna cats were also very entertaining - especially when a crab wandered in! (You couldn't be closer to the beach).

The restaurant is very cosy and fitted out with lots of interesting memorabilia. More importantly, the food is truly excellent - definitely the best we had during our trip - all fresh and very well prepared. It's also good value.

The only reason the place doesn't get the full five stars is for something beyond the hotel's control, which is the fact that Mahahual was badly hit by Hurricane Dean, and it will take time for the town to get back on its feet. However, it's worth going to take a look if you're passing that way, and you certainly can't do better for a place to stay than the Maya Luna.

Majahual must have been a fabulous place, but climate and tourism is doing a very bad work here. In August 2007 we discovered a dying lagoon, with seaweeds everywhere ‘left to keep fish leaving’ explain the MayaLuna owners. To clean the sand of the lagoon need important investment, but to clean the first few meters beach (with wind sending plastic rubbish each morning, and to permit children to go into water without been afraid by all things in the water) seems a minimum to welcome correctly tourist. A car is essential, to go to the village ( 4km from rooms) to find a clean beach, but also waves of hundreds of tourists escaping from cruise boat to drink beer, buy plaster memories and also playing with noisy motorboat or Quad. The Puerto Maya town creating kilometres of road to prepare building to keep longer period those tourists will grow the destruction of what should be a natural and quiet place If think previous storms destroyed slowly the lagoon, and after Hurricane end of August 2007 it must be worst. We went to the Belize frontier , with same dirty water but also with Jelly fish, it was a pity to meet a young couple that arrive for 1 week and realising the situation.
This sad situation is not improve by a military behaviour of the host, as she administer you as soon as you arrive all rule you have to respect for water, electricity etc.. for probably good reasons (but unpleasant manner). If she forgot some ingredients of children breakfast ( and size from her husband was far bigger..), she will not forget after a 1 week staying to make you pay every pesos … even if you send a 30% reservation payment that give her an good rate. I can’t claim for this in holidays, but it is very unpleasant. And I understand the situation in Majahual is defacing so much !

  • Disliked — what Majahual has became, and shape of the MayaLuna lagoon

Sorry to hear that the holiday of guests at Maya Luna was not at all what they expected it to be.
I would like to respond to some of the comments.

Maya Luna is an ecological hotel and is located in a environmentally protected area. Sea grass beds are of critical importance, intimately linked to the well-being of the reef just in front of our hotel: among other things it is a nursery ground for shrimp, lobster, snapper and other sea life. That’s why we don’t get rid of the sea grass growing in the sea in front of our beach.

Its true that every day again a lot of sea grass and unfortunately a lot of garbage lands on our beach. But guests must have noticed that our gardener is cleaning our beach every day. And every single day he collects the sea grass washing ashore and uses it as fertilizer for our garden.

I remember this family left after breakfast nearly every day, coming in again most days late in the evening. So we had very little contact. I remember that we have proposed them several times to let us know what their children’s favorite dish was so we could prepare it for them. But they never did and hardly did not eat in our restaurant. .

I would say that paying a deposit to secure a reservation and in the end paying what you have to pay is quite a normal thing. The exchange rates we manage are as close as possible to the official rates of the day of the deposit has been made. Our policy is : we don’t want to gain money on exchange rates, but neither loose money on it.

Of the whole review I understand that their holiday in Mahahual was quite disappointing. They didn’t like the sea, they didn’t like the town, and did not like us, the owners. I’m sorry about that, and sincerely wished they had informed me on all this during their stay, so I could have tried to do something to make their holiday a bit more comfortable.

We spent the day at Maya Luna during a cruise ship stop in Costa Maya. I found out about it on the Cruise Critic website, and contacted the property directly to make reservations. This is a great place to spend the day in Majahual. All arrangements were made thru email, and a small deposit was required to hold space for us. Deposit was put towards our food/drink bill. Only 15 persons are allowed to use facility at one time. Staff is small, and were kept very busy with the 10-12 people that were there that day. Bar and restaurant are very good, but service is a bit slow. Property is small, but very nice. Nice shady areas to relax. Hammocks, kayaks, and loungers available on beach. We like to book excursions that are away from the hustle and chaos at the pier. This fit our needs. It was a relaxing day in the sun. We were able to swim and snorkle from the beach. We were able to see guest rooms. They are very simple, but clean. Costa Maya and Majahual is mostly undeveloped and primitive. These accomodations seemed to fit the area, and were very clean and reasonalbly priced at about $75.00 per night. I would recommend this place for a relaxing peaceful getway. Don't expect any frills, just simple accomodations at a good price.

  • Liked — Peaceful, Relaxing, able to get away from it all!
  • Disliked — Service from bar / restaurant was a bit unorganized, and short on staff

We stayed on Hotel Maya Luna in Majahual earlier this month. I have to say that the place is amazing, it went far beyond our expectatives. The nice thing about this hotel es that it has only four rooms, leaving a lot of room for the quietness we were looking for. Unfortunately, this quietness was interrupted constantly by groups of american tourists that rent speedboats and go all the way along the coast, between the beach and the coral reef. What's sad about this, is that with this kind of growing activities many plants and coral itself are heavily damaged by the sake of fun.
Anyway, our experience with the post, food, friendliness, etc. was the best. In fact we are starting to plan our next holidays there.
