“Hotel Arenas & Area - Mahahual, QR, Mex 2011-08-23”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2011

Staying in the Playa del Carmen area for an extended stay, we decided to take our second trip south and visit Mahahual..overnight...2.5 hours south. Day was gorgeous, beaches beautiful but loaded with 'boat people', as you have to remember this is a cruise ship destination. Capable of 5 ships per day, fortunately when we arrived there was only one and they were nearing the end of their day therefore departing soon. We decided to check out the nearby hotels but opted for a few more secluded, boutique type hotels south of the main beach area...maybe like 1 mile south of the activity.

The Hotel Arenas was right on the beach (well across the dirt roadway)...had their own private beach area for customers/quests; service on the beach..either drinks or dinner or breakfast...very accommodating. Very friendly. We choose the top floor room to spoil ourselves. Very clean, a/c, gorgeous view...sunrises directly in front of you...very spectacular! Cost of food was very moderate considering the area. Only spent one night but will spend more on next trip. Mahahual has beautiful beaches...great snorkelling. Where the malecon (walkway) is, there are lots of vendors and restaurants and beach palapas to take in the view. The vendors are very similar to 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen!!! which is why we chose to stay a bit out of it at the Arenas. Overall a GREAT experience. Again, boat people abound if a ship is in port. Check schedules!

Room Tip: don't be afraid to ask to view the room.;

i had the pleasure to stay at hotel arenas. the rooms & staff were great ! i spoke no spanish when i arrived yet was still able to have a great time & learn a little spanish when i left. the staff was great & saw to our every need. the rooms were always spotless, the food was reasonably priced & excellent to eat. when one the staff luciana found out i was a finicky eater. she went out her way to order for me knowing my preferences i was never disappointed. if you are a couple on a romantic get-a-away, business man, or on family vacation. this little hotel has it all. right on the beach with free kayaks & just a short distance from the store & nightlife. i will visit again & recommend to anyone staying in mahahaul to do the same.

Room Tip: rooms 5-6 have the best ocean view

We recently stayed at the Hotel Arenas in Mahahual (11/2010) and found it to be a very nice small hotel. The rooms were about 15'x15' plus the bathroom and balcony/deck, ours had a king size bed, with a large wardrobe for hanging clothes and drawer items. The hotel has only about 6 to 8 rooms, so it is a small intimate place, very friendly and helpful staff with a restaurant/bar right on the premises. We paid a in advance for our trip (about $65 inc Tax) and our reservation was correct when we arrived and the manager was waiting to check us in herself.

The restaurant has a small, but tasty menu, for breakfast. lunch and dinner. The Margaritas were hand mixed and generous compared to many places in the area. Restaurant prices were very reasonable, about 70 to 200 pesos per dinner entree, depending on the item. Seafood, chicken and pasta dominated the dinner selections.

The beach is directly across the small dirt beach access road from the hotel, about 75 feet from our room. There are chairs and lounges with umbrellas for sitting on the beach as well as outside of the hotel.

Make no mistake, Hotel Arenas is not a 5 star 1st class hotel as you might find in the larger resorts, ie Cancun, but there are none of those in Mahahual anyway, as the town is a very small laid back beach/fishing village in a somewhat remote area. Hotel Arenas is however, as very friendly, clean comfortable place to stay basically right on the beach.

We had a rental car, so the Hotel's location about 1 mile from the center of town was great for us. If you want to stumble from bar to bar and then back to your hotel, either stay in town or get a cab, which were readily available.

The dive shop we used was just about 1/2 mile down the road from the hotel, so that was also convenient for us.

All in all, we really liked the place and will try to return soon.
