“Exceptional service at Royal Suites and a better than expected room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

We visited Royal Suites Yucatan for the first time in February 2013. We were looking for an adults only all-inclusive with better than average rooms, service and food. This was our seventh trip to Riviera Maya and the fourth all-inclusive we’ve tried (others were Secrets Maroma Beach, Ocean Coral & Turquesa, and El Dorado Casitas Royale – our hands-down favorite). Thanks to Trip Advisor reviews, we knew that the Royal Suites was part of a larger, family friendly complex, which was fine, but we wanted a quieter place to which we could escape and find some peace and tranquility.

The entire complex is beautiful, well thought out and offers just about anything you might want. The staff throughout the resort, and especially at the Royal Suites, was amazing. Smiles all around, super friendly and very accommodating. We enjoyed breakfast most days at the Royal Suites restaurant and had dinner there several times. We very much enjoyed the many cats visiting diners on the terrace as well as the raccoons who were quite entertaining.

Other things we loved about the Royal Suites – the room was very nice, despite the fact that we booked the least swanky of the options at Royal Suites. It was quite large and the balcony/Jacuzzi was gigantic. We were very pleasantly surprised. We also loved the lounge chairs on the balcony and enjoyed sitting out there reading in the morning. Housekeeping did a great job and left us lots of towel and flower petal surprises throughout the week.

We had originally requested a room on a higher floor. We stopped at reception to ask whether it might be possible to relocate during our stay so that we could have a room on a higher floor. Although the Royal Suites were at or near capacity, they made an effort to accommodate us and contacted us with the offer of a new room. (We ended up declining because the process for switching rooms sounded a bit more complicated than we were up for, so we decided to stay where we were. But we were very grateful for the effort they made to find a different room for us.)

The golf cart shuttle service was really convenient and friendly. At most, we waited maybe 10 minutes even at the busiest times of the day. The free boat rides were a relaxing and fun way to view the the entire property and to get around between hotels.

We spent a lot of time at the saltwater pool, which has terraced levels leading down to the saltwater pool and the ocean. It was never crowded at the saltwater pool, despite being high season. The large beach beds in the Royal Suites beach area are nice, as is the nearby bar. We also took a Segway tour of the resort, which we highly recommend. It was fun learning how to use a Segway and then zipping around the resort’s various areas to explore all it had to offer. The spa is stunning and has a very relaxed feel.

We spent very little time at the Royal Suites pool, other than at the end of the day, because it seemed to fill up quickly in the morning and felt a little closed in to us. There is very little negative we can say about our stay, however, we have enjoyed the other adults-only all-inclusive resorts a little more because the other resorts seem to draw mostly couples, while the Royal Suites seems to attract larger groups of couples traveling together. Some of these groups had a “takeover” mentality of certain areas in the Royal Suites. They seemed to want to monopolize the lone bartenders on duty at the lobby and pool bars, the handful of outdoor tables overlooking the lagoon off the main lobby – and the pool area in general. They were boisterous and having a great time together, but if you were looking for a quiet, relaxing afternoon reading a book poolside with your spouse, you often weren’t going to find that. At least not during the week we were there. This is no reflection on the Royal Suites itself, just an observation about the difference between our experiences visiting all-inclusive resorts in the area.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Royal Suites. It is a beautiful place with great people working hard to make sure you love where you are vacationing.

We've never stayed at the "high end" part of a resort before, and we certainly did feel like royalty. The pool was quiet, felt exclusive, and we did enjoy that. The rooms were also beautiful, origami towels amazing, and all the staff were most polite. The free Wi-Fi was appreciated, as was the clock-radio with iPod charger. Maybe it is just the Air Transat tour operator we had, but the direct bus to/from the airport (rather than stopping at three different places at ten different resorts along the way), was really nice. If it's your birthday, let them know in advance and they'll decorate your room with balloons and leave you a little chocolate cake. There's a list of special requests you can make, such as a type of pillow, or what time to make-up the room, and they did all this fully, and it was also much appreciated. The spa facilities were great, and the gym and equipment very high quality (though they don't have any keys for the change-room locker cabinets).

But if they want to improve, here are some comments:

1) Signs and information about the resort frequently comments about their concern for the environment. If they really cared, they would have solar water heating and photovoltaic solar cells to help generate electricity.

2) Some of the evening shows were great, but the big problem is all that is provided is the show's name. There really should be a sentence or two describing the show. What can one tell from "Caribe" or "Fire".

3) The sliding doors on the room patios lock when you fully close them, locking you out of your own unit. There should at least be a warning sign about this.

4) The pen for the crocodiles (the more northerly one, not the island) looks way too small, has way too much concrete, and is way too sparse.

5) They keep bringing liquor bottles to your room, but you can't refuse it, and you can't take it home with you. Why make so much work for no reason.

6) They allow making private archery sessions, but they got it wrong three times (wrong day, conflicting time with another booking). They were most apologetic, and they did eventually get it right, but they do need a better system for this.

7) The sports equipment was mostly broken. They had only one right-handed and one left-handed archery bow, so the scheduled archery is mostly 15 people waiting and watching one person. They had only a single shuffleboard stick, even though they have two decks -- there needs to be at least four sticks, preferably eight. And the discs were all chipped. This is a really easy and inexpensive problem to fix. They should have a laminated card with the shuffleboard rules.

8) The riflery should have targets where you can see how you're doing. Shooting at tennis balls just shows if you hit it or not, there's no feedback so you can learn how better to aim or how much you're missing by. It is just random.

9) The miniature golf holes are really stupid. Each one is almost identical and completely impossible as the hole is up a short ramp, which is only only one side. It is just a frustrating waste of time.

10) The food was good enough, quite a large selection. But there needs to be descriptions of the buffet food. I'm a vegetarian, so a description like "Texas Rice" just doesn't tell me anything useful. The buffets were completely repetitive; all buffets were the same, just rearranged, and the same food every day. Very few special things to discover (other than real ice cream in a few places, or that the bar has pub mix snacks).

11) One day there was a letter they would be fumigating the room for bugs, but if we requested, they would not do this. We don't much care for poison and would prefer they do this when the room is empty for a day. So we did request they not do this, and the concierge duly wrote it down. But there was later an unusual smell in the room, I'm sure they did it anyways. In fact everytime the smiling concierge wrote something on a piece of paper, it never happened (the archery booking, for example). If there isn't a computer program for it (such as restaurant reservations), it doesn't happen.

12) When we arrived, our room key didn't work. The suitcase porter guy should have zipped back to fix this, but we ended up having to phone and walk back.

13) It would be nice to have more retail on-site. The vendors that set up had glaring bare light bulbs and poor selection.

Also, the resort is needlessly huge. We never took the golf carts transfer, seems like a silly waste of time to be waiting for transfers when you can get exercise walking instead. Who wants to spend their vacation waiting for buses within their own resort. But the walking and the walking, with the carts and some scooters zipping by gets annoying.

Room Tip: We were in building 69, on the ground floor, in a Royal Suite. The room was magnificent, and the bui...

We have stayed at Royal Suites in Punta Cana - TERRIBLE (poor food, unfriendly staff, overall not up to par. HOWEVER - ROYAL SUITES YUCATAN WAS THE OPPOSITE - there aren't sufficient adjectives to describe the Royal Suites Adult All-Inclusive. We were treated like royalty, every step of the way. Beautiful facilities, magnificent rooms - spacious, spotless. Variety of restaurants, something for everyone. We mentioned that it was our anniversary and our Butler made special arrangements for us that we will always remember - private, romantic table at El Jardin, music, champagne and chocolate dipped-strawberries, rose petals and candles, our hot tub on the balcony also had "mood-lighting". The bar service and beach service was spot on. Fun, friendly staff everywhere. At breakfast the maitre de greated you with "good morning my family" and a huge smile. Good food, the lobby bar always had appetizers, sweets to accompany your drinks. Concierge was very pleasant and helpful and tended your every need. The grounds are spectacular - well kept & clean. Going back in February and bringing friends. We are anxiously awaiting another wonderful experience!! Highly recommend this slice of "paradise" you will visit again and again.

Room Tip: We were actually there in Feb. 2012 and stayed in building 68 or 69 - directly across from the lobby...

For the 4th time in Mexico I must react this year, because this is the area of the hotel (the Royal Suites) as offered as exclusive and better (and more expensive). In fact, it was not so.
As we arrived around 7 p.m. (after about 20 hours travelling) at the lobby, no one seems to worry about the 2 only tourists wo arrived with their suitcases in the small lobby of the Royal Suites. After checking-in, we had to wait 15 minutes untill a bellboy appears (apparently from another hotel of the same company) to lead us with his cart to our room. Never seen during the last 15 years in all the hotels we stayed, worldwide.
The service at the exclusive (only for Royal Suites) restaurant "El Jardin" was very mediocre: There is a total disorganization.
In the exclusive (only for Royal Suites) restaurant "El Jardin" (50 places), you can eat in a pleasant atmosphere, but the choice of dishes is very limited, by comparison to the buffet restaurants (5 buffet restaurants who serves the 1'500 rooms of the Palladium Hotels..).
In the buffet restaurants it is always the same assortment, the quality and the presentation of the dishes was not appetizing, Also the mexican dishes were mediocre. The worst food that we have seen during the last 15 years.
In the exclusive pool are of the Royal Suites, there is no carefully cleaning: In the morning: ashtrays and empty glasses are still on the ground, at 8.a.m. the towels from the past day are still in the adequate receptacle (see photos). And the staff was not worried about this.

My husband and I, along with 7 other family members, travelled to the Royal Suites Yucatan by Palladium from December 11-18, 2013. This was my husband and I's second time to The Royal Suites (we had been there for our honeymoon for 2 weeks in July 2012). We have travelled to many other countries, and many other all inclusive resorts, but this one certainly tops them all! We will definitely return and would recommend any all inclusive traveller looking to be spoiled to head here!

Bars:
The highlight of both of our visits to The Royal Suites has definitely been getting to know the bartenders and experiencing their incredible service! Jose Luis AKA "Pepe" (Royal Suites lobby bar), Filliberto (Royal Suites lobby bar), Roman (Royal Suites - covers various shifts), are the BEST! They are so sweet and rock at what they do! Luis worked the Royal Suites pool bar during our honeymoon in July 2012 and is now at the Riviera lobby bar but he is also incredible. On our honeymoon, he never let our drinks go dry and we barely had to move an inch! I would actually recommend that he be put back on this shift for how good he was at the Royal Suites pool! Santos is also a great bartender at the Royal Suites pool. If you are looking for a party resort, I probably wouldn't recommend this one - it is more low key but still such a fun time!

Food:
The food at the Royal Suites a la carte "El Jardin" is incredible! Be sure to try the coconut shrimp cocktail and cheese fondue. We did have a bit of trouble when ordering steaks - they were VERY rare (even when ordered well done), but other than that, the food and the service was excellent! It is also nice that we were able to make reservations for 9 people every night at 7 or 7:30 with no problem. In fact, I made all the reservations in advance by emailing the Royal suites lobby. They took care of us and all our reservation slips were ready for us upon our arrival. This is also a perk of staying at the Royal suites compared to the other sections of the grand palladium - the other sections have to wait to get into the restaurants while we were able to sneak right in with our reservations.
We also ate at the following a la cartes: Portofino (Italian), Japanese (be sure to sit at the table where they cook as a show for you), Rodizio (Brazilian), La Adalita (Mexican), Ribs and More, and El Dorado (the steak house). The good was pretty good for the most part - I would say typical all inclusive meals. Generally the service was a little slow... Usually took around 2 hours (7-9PM) to have our meals. Our favourite restaurants were the Japanese and Rodizio. There were just a few particular items I wanted to point out in hopes that the resort would make an effort to improve them.
First, when we arrived at our Japanese a la carte for our reservation, we were 15 minutes late. We had been waiting for a Royal Suites golf carte for quite some time - it was a busy rainy night, but we had the Royal Suites reception desk call the restaurant to let them know this so they would know we were on our way. When we arrived, we were very meanly greeted by a man named Salvador. He pretty much yelled at us for being late. We knew it was an issue, but we tried to let them know we weren't being dissrespectful, just having a hard time catching a golf cart. I think this could have been dealt with differently since it was an awful first impression of the restaurant. The food was great though and in the end, an awesome dinner show!
Secondly I also wanted to point out some major issues we had at "La Adalita" the Mexican restaurant. I wouldn't recommend that guests go to this restaurant since it is the only one we really had real issues with. When we first arrived, we were seated at a table for 9. We arrived at 7PM and by 8PM some of us still didn't have water or any drinks ordered. Our waiter seemed to have trouble understanding English, and took all of our orders in a random order, which I am assuming led to some confusion. As an example, my brother in law and brother both ordered coffee with baileys. One of them got black coffee with apple chunks in it and another received a glass of flat coke and another glass of milk and Ameretto. We all had plans to go to Coco Bongo that evening, so we didn't have an unlimited amount of time for dinner. After an hour and a half, we still didn't have the soup we ordered. We finally pointed this out, we got it, and the soups were cold. When we finally received our main courses, my dad discovered a bone in his chicken enchiladas. My chicken tacos were undercooked, and my brother was sick with food poisoning for 2 days later (he was the only one who actually ate his main course). We ended up having to rush to the buffet to eat a meal before going out.
On a more positive note, Jose at Rodizio was an awesome waiter! It was excellent service and great food here!

Pools:
The pools are awesome - so many of them and they all have different vibes depending on how you feel. They are extremely clean as well! Sometimes I wish they were heated - even with solar heat (to remain eco friendly), but that would be my only comment about the pools other than how awesome they are!

Rooms:
This time we stayed in the Royal Junior Suites in building 69. This building is an awesome location - one of the closest to the pool and the lobby. We requested this in advance and got what we asked for. On our honeymoon last year we stayed in the Royal suites cabana - this was a neat experience as well. One of our comments about the rooms is that when guests leave their empty room service plates out at night, there are many angry raccoons that come out. Those raccoons prevented a few of our family members from getting to their room at night. In the cabanas, they would also frequently flight in the ceiling and we would have to get someone to scare them away - not a big deal, it is just something the resort could consider managing.
In addition, the reason I did not rate this resort a full five stars (very good instead of excellent) is because one of the four rooms we had was infested with bedbugs. One of our friends had bites all over his body - especially his face and torso (he hugs a pillow when he sleeps). It got worse and worse throughout our trip, when we finally returned home, he went to the doctors since it had gotten so bad. They immediately told him that it was bed bugs. When we thought back to our trip, we remembered seeing a bug crawl across the bed, we killed it but for some reason we didn't think of bed bugs... we should have since we are avid travellers... but unfortunately we did not realize this until we were home.

Overall though, we will still return to the Royal Suites Yucatan, and would recommend couples (especially honeymooners or those celebrating anniversaries) to stay here!

Room Tip: Rooms in building 69 or 71 are closest to the Royal Suites pool and lobby. I would recommend staying...

We have gone to the royal suites in PV and now for the first to the mayan. The weather was not the best lot of rain. For the hotel very nice. The rooms were great. The El jarden resturant for royal guests was good for supper but not impressed at all for breakfast ordered both on and off the menu food overcooked nothing like the one in PV where the food was better. No lunch had to go to the buffet not to bad but really busy. The PV location offers this and service was a lot better. The entertainment was great and the shows at night were good. The Rock n Roll show was the best We have seen. Very clean resort for such a big resort. Room service very good. No stomach issues at all. The salt water pool very nice. Lots of wildlife to see. Would return but would most likely go to PV Royal suites .

Room Tip: Very quit rooms at the royal suites
