This was our third time staying at the Royal Yucatan. I need to preface this report by saying that although we have been privileged to go to many upscale all-inclusives, as well as vacations at 5-star resorts around the world, we always agreed to never return to any place twice because there are too many wonderful places to see. However, we loved this place so much that we returned a third time.
The first year we went for the week following Sat. July 3rd. The second year we went at the end of May, for the week following Memorial Day. May is definitely a better time of year for us because of the weather and insects. However, this year we went again in late June early July due to commitments in May and it was wonderful. Unlike the first year, there were minimal number of insects and it was not too hot.
Anyway, when I entered the temporary lobby (now completed), Filberto immediately recognized me again (I am not sure what that says about me always being recognized by the bar tender, but he did). Surprisingly Aurora not only recognized us, but asked about our son, who was there only once with us 4 years ago. She runs an excellent resort and cares deeply about making every guest happy. The first year we were in room 6930, the second year we were at 7130, both full suites, which are extremely large and absolutely gorgeous. The first year we needed a full suite because one of our adult children came with us, the second year with just the two of us it was overly extravagant, but this is what my husband wanted. This year we ordered a junior suite to save money but got upgraded! When we arrived at our room, I noticed an enormous basket of fruit, rose petals decorating our room and a bottle of champagne. It was our 35th anniversary and the resort remembered!! These are things that make the Royal Yucatan special.
Once again, El Jardine had a great selection of breakfast foods and real fresh squeezed orange juice along with a wide variety of other juices, to select from.
We spent a good bit of time at the royal beach. The gorgeous blue ocean was warm and pleasant. We enjoyed eating fruit placed in grapefruit shells that the wonderful bar tenders brought to us around the Royal area of the beach. We walked to the other beaches and swam there as well. Like every year, we enjoyed the complimentary services at the spa. We loved the pools, Jacuzzis, steam, and saunas, lazy river, etc we also again took time exploring and seeing crocodiles, flamingos, ducks, geese, iguanas and other types of lizards. We visited the protected area for turtles and enjoyed the nice walking paths.
We began our evening by gong into El Jardine (the temporary bar while the Royal lobby was being built). The hors d'oeuvre were amazing. And it was nice to get a drink before we got ready for dinner. We had wonderful dinners at Mare Nostrum, Rodizio, Sumptuor and other nights at El Jardine. Unlike previous years, one restaurant each night was dedicated to adults only. (Obviously El Jardine is always adults only). We enjoyed dining at Mare Nostrum, and my husband loved the lamb. At Rodizio, they brought out meat served by the "ESPETO CORRIDO"; waiters were dressed in traditional Brazilian clothing as well as a nice salad bar. Since the only restaurant we disliked the first year we stayed at Royal Yucatan was Sumptuori, we avoided it during our second trip. When we went the first year, we sat at the teppanyaki table and found the food salty. However, I suggested we give it another try but this time eat at the Sushi bar (they also have regular tables and a tatami area) Although we get excellent sushi back home, we had fun. The sushi was good and the Saki was excellent. The remainder of our dinners was at our favorite, El Jardine. Unlike previous years, they have a special night where they have a 5-course tasting menu. We thought the food was comparable to a 5-star restaurant. The excellent chef works there all the time and takes a great deal of pride in his work. In addition to being a great chef, he is a very nice interesting man. I only wish he cooked Polish food once in a while, since he is from Poland. However, he felt that no one else would want to eat it. New this time was that Royal guests could order delicious Caribbean lobster at any of the restaurants; it is not limited to El Jardine.
One night we spent hanging out in the Jacuzzi, looking at the stars. It doesn’t get much more romantic than that. We went to two good shoes ‘the Humanity” and “The Rock show”. We bar hopped most nights catching the live music at all of the lobbies. We especially enjoyed the bands that played Spanish music and watching people dance. We stopped by the piano bar and enjoyed hearing the piano player play. The little treats there looked delicious but we never saved room for desert. We stopped at the cigar bar, but it was almost always empty.
Overall our trip ended wonderfully like it began. When we returned to our room the last night, there were chocolate covered strawberries and another bottle of champagne waiting for us! However, we didn’t have time to drink it so we gave it to first timers. They were a lovely couple who arrived just as we were about to leave!
Unlike previous years we didn’t take time to visit Akumal, nor Playa. De Carmen. We came to the resort after having a very busy year and just wanted R and R and we got exactly that. The bar tenders servers; golf cart drivers etc. were as warm and friendly as ever. Surprisingly the gusts seemed a little different this year. There were people from Spain and when I greeted them (in Spanish or English) they often just turned away. I am not sure what I did to offend them, .but I never let it bother me. The last time we met extremely friendly people from Spain so I don’t know what was going on.
Will I go back??? Most definitely!! I would be crazy not to. Funny just a few years ago I vowed to never return to the same place twice and next time will be trip #4.
