“the 50 yard line on Half Moon Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

Penthouse unit #8 (found on VRBO.com/276236) was gorgeous. Right in the center of Half Moon Bay. It was bright, beautiful and breezy. Check in was easy, we stopped at the La Bahia office a few buildings to the north to pick up our keys and sign some paperwork. The condo was comfortable (if you don't plan to lounge on the couches to long :-)) and well appointed with lots of attention to detail. The views are fantastic and the balcony is large yet very private. The owners had recently purchased a great gas grill and it was very convenient to make several meals. I ordered groceries for delivery from www.rivieramayagroceries.com and everything was delivered and ready for us when we arrived. This is a service definitely worth it's price and I highly recommend it. We rented bicycles from Vista Del Mar as they are very convenient and a fun way to get around HMB. One did keep losing it's chain though, so my husband turned it in for a different one. We rode our bikes to Yal Ku to snorkel, we arrived right at 9 am and the water was crystal clear. We rode our bikes to the Collectivo stand and took two trips - one to Puerto Adventuras and another to Tulum beach - fantastic views and a must see. The day before we left, we rode them to Akumal Bay to swim with the turtles. We also swam with a few rays too - it is what the word awesome was created to describe. The locals are so friendly and gracious that we never want to go home. We ate at La Buena Vida, La Cueva del Pescador and Lol Ha - Lol Ha's view is my favorite and the fish tacos are so yummy! The unit has pretty good wi-fi - they were working on it a little to improve the signal in some units, but was always fast and available when I wanted it. The satellite TV was not the best, but we didn't really come to watch TV. There were lots of great movies (and for kids too) if the signal was out. There is a rooftop terrace that is ideal for watching the sunrise, sunset or star gazing. The owners have a deep love for the area and were able to give us hints and information to enhance our stay. We hope to return next year.

The upper unit of the Playa Blanca Casitas (room 10) in Akumal was extremely comfortable and homey. Between the fully furnished kitchen and the convenience to the beach, it's a great place to stay. It is very clean and the housekeeping staff is impeccable as far as keeping it up while you are there. Additionally, the grounds are maintained immaculately, and you always see someone tending to the gardens. As I was a solo traveler, internet connection was really important and I didn't have a single problem with that...even with Hurricane Ernesto to deal with! The managers are extremely diligent in making sure everything is taken care of and are always in touch with you via e-mail. This was a last-minute reservation while I was in Tulum and they were very accommodating.

The two casitas are in a separate building from the rest of the condos. They sit a little back from the beach, but it’s a very short walk and you can see the beach from them. I rented a bicycle while I was there because it is a lengthy walk into the town area. Half Moon Bay is a rocky beach and it’s not real conducive to swimming. If you swim in this area, you should wear some kind of water shoes. The beach at Akumal Bay is much more swimmer-friendly.

The restaurants in Akumal are somewhat pricey, as well as the little tiendas where you can buy supplies for eating in, so be prepared for that. If you’re renting a car, you may want to buy supplies before you get to Akumal. In fact, if I ever stayed there again, I would definitely rent a car so that I could visit nearby areas. Other than snorkeling, scuba diving and relaxing, there really isn’t much else to do right in the town of Akumal.

I was, however, fortunate to see the migration of baby sea turtles to the ocean, which was an unexpected treat. The people there are very protective of sea turtles and the hatching process, so you will see areas marked off on the beach where turtles have laid their eggs.

The two things I was slightly disappointed in with the casita was that there was no outside balcony area and no cable TV. There is a large window that looks towards the ocean, but it would have been nice to be able to sit outside while in the room. By the way, the casita on the lower floor does have an outside patio area. The ad for the casita stated that they had a TV and DVD player, so I automatically assumed they had cable, which was my error. So if you’re expecting to have cable, be aware that they do not. Despite these two items, I would highly recommend Playa Blanca Casitas for a relaxing stay in Akumal.

Room Tip: If you want an outside balcony area, choose any room other than unit 10.

The family was thrilled, after roughing it for a while, to hold up here for several days. The unit was spacious , clean , quiet, and very comfortable. It was close to Tulum, which was a treasure ( ruins outlined by turquoise ocean).

We stayed in unit 8 at Playa Blanca. This condo is on the top floor with a sweeping panoramic ocean view. Nicely decorated, clean & spacious. We rented it as a 3 bedroom unit. It was perfect since the bedroom has a separate entrance several feet away the main unit. Great for older children or those seeking additional privacy from the rest of their party. The only negative is Half Moon Bay is not a good swimming beach & there is no pool. It didn't bother us, but you definitely need water shoes if you plan on swimming since the beach is rocky. I thought Playa Blanca was great and would definitely love to stay there again. Another bonus, it is very close to La Buena Vida...a fun beachside restaurant and bar!

This was our 30th plus trip to Akumal and our 2nd time at Playa Blanca.

On our first visit we stayed in a ground floor and on this occasion we stayed in the top (3rd) floor. Both have pros and cons.

The main advantages to being higher are the great views - you can literally watch the seas turtles swimming around in Halfmoon Bay and the cooling seas breezes.

If you are looking for luxury, service, attention and all mod-cons this place is not for you. If you are looking to take things sloooooowwly, and live to the natural rhythms of nature, enjoy some wonderful snorkeling, then this is a great base.

This condo feels like a home and is furnished accordingly. All the bedrooms have a/c which we would recommend only using is absolutely necessary - most of the time the sea breeze is more than sufficient and the sound of the waves will lull you to sleep.

The kitchen is basic, but very clean as is the entire condo, and unless you are planning some serious catering will be more than sufficient.

The condo has a TV equipped with Sky - but why on earth would you need it? At night you may be lucky enough to spot a sea turtle coming to the beach to pay her eggs, or maybe some hatchings make their way to the see. Visit the Akumal Ecological center next to the Akumal dive shop for more info.

The condo has a great roof top deck from which you can do some star-gazing and who knows you may even break into conversation.... perish the thought.

The condo has a book exchange and you could also try playing games. But if you are coming all the way to Akumal, why not try giving the TV a miss? You kids will thank you for it as they comb the beach for hermit crabs and the like.

In the past 24 years we have seen the reef deteriorate which is very sad, but you can help by please NOT STANDING ON THE CORAL. Every day we say people standing where they should have been swimming or snorkeling.

Akumal means place of the turtles and if you have a mask and fins you will see them. You can even see them from your terrace!

The beach is lovely, but access is difficult and beast dealt with wearing diving boots or water shoes - but as soon as you can start to swim, and you will avoid stepping on coral or a sea urchin. The best swimming is at Akumal main bay which is a short drive or 15 min walk away.

You will find dining and bars in Halfmoon Bay and also in Akumal main bay.

There is a great deal to do in the area, from parks like Xcaret and Xel-Ha through to Mayan sites (Tulum and Coba) to fresh water holes (cenotes).

I suspect that if you are considering Playa Blanca you are a person who enjoys life a little off the beaten track - this is a great place for you.

BTW the maids are wonderful!

For those who simply cannot disconnect - there is free wireless internet service in the condo.

Although this was our third trip to Akumal it was our first on Half Moon Bay. Choose this casitia based on its price during High Season. Pleasantly surprised. This unit is in a free standing building seperate from the Playa Blanca high rise. It is on the street side corner of the PB property and on the ground floor. The front door of the casita is on the road side but the sliding patio door faces the beach - which is about 20 yards away. Unit is set up basically like a double hotel room but with a small kitchenette. Not huge but fine for our family of four (kids 14 and 10) because we live on the beach and not in the room. It was quite comfortable for the six nights we were there. Property is very well maintained and staff was wonderful. This best feature of this casita is the beach side patio which has a table and seating for four. No cable/satellite tv but did have a DVD and pretty good Wifi. Unit is managed by a neighboring complex which has an on site office. Rented movies from the( Lol Ha) office several nights and bikes for the week, too. They even helped us place an order for pizza one night. Nice place, well maintain and all for a great Spring Break price. Onlyreal complaint - and I mean only - is that the landscaping lights shine DIRECTLY in the two large windows at night. However, I fixed this after the first night by unscrewing the bulbs. By the third night the grounds guys discovered my solution and tightened them so, not to cause problems, I'd unscrew them each night before bed (they really do make the grounds lovely) and then I'd tighten them in the morning.
