“Fabulour resort - ignore the negative comments!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

In total honesty, most reviews have covered every aspect of this hotel but I would like to sum up a few key points which I think make this hotel spectacular and mention the few niggly negatives. We stayed in the Mayan side block. If you can ask for a room higher up, it will be quieter, as the hotel is laid out in such a way that even buggies can drive on the ground floors between blocks and as it is built of stone, it gets quite echo-ey.

The pluses:

- the rooms are very spacious as are the bathrooms.
- we had a room with a glass partition between the bathroom and bedroom which worked great
- water and soft drinks/beer replenished daily (and we are talking about a 5 litre bottle of water here.....)
- wonderful beach area which looks a lot smaller on the photographs but it is quite spread out.
- super snorkelling off the beach including resident turtles - you just need to know where to look for them but we went out "turtle-spotting" everyday and saw 2-3 turtles each time (the beach furthest away from the bbq area - just beyond where the boats are moored in the evenings).
- lovely Mayan ruin on a promontory on the beach.
- great service (bar one or two boys at the pedalo rental place who insisted on receiving tips, saying that tips are his friend! cheeky and totally not in keeping with the staff of the rest of the hotel, but it transpired that this is an external concessionary within the hotel).
- stunning and huge gardens, with lots of wildlife but nothing threatening etc.
- no mosquitoes! (maybe we were just lucky)
- fantastic lazy river (The only one in the hotels in the area, I believe)
- management willing to listen to customers (they have stand alone computers dotted around the lobby for you to write your comments).

Now to some of the negatives but dont let this put you off, it is to give a balanced view:
- lack of Mexican feel around the place (no hammocks etc)
- wrong maps handed out at the reception desk (apparently old and therefore, the timings are different) - check and ask if this is the latest version (kids club had totally rearranged its hours which had a negative impact one day on our plans)
- It does not say this anywhere but airgun shooting is only from 16 - my 11 year old boy was quite upset by this;
- I sent an email beforehand to the hotel (I believe it was to the HQ address but to the Mexican hotel) and never received any acknowledgement - poor PR
- do not count on sleeping on the sofa in the bedroom (for children for example) as it is next to useless as a bed; ask for a rollaway bed.
- pillows are thin and hard, if you have preferences, bring your own
- concierge people vary from fantastic (Teresa, Simon) to downright bored and awful (Adrian).
- Jacuzzi in the bathroom takes forever to fill up and awkward to find the hot water spot;
- boats are moored right by the beach at around 1600 where the best snorkelling is making the swimming area even smaller and polluting the beach with engine fumes!.
- food is OK (the best spread is at breakfast) and then lunch and dinner get very boring, limited and samey. The speciality restaurants are not much better. We tried 5 of them and did not enjoy any of the meals there. Some dishes are also very salty.
- lack of specific information re some shows such as no one knew what time the Mariachis would be playing and where (They play during the Mexican evening)

Overall a great resort, we had a wonderful time and found it very relaxing. There is a lot of walking to do but it means that you do not feel on top of each other.

Mexico is a great country and the people are fantastic! Go and enjoy!!

Room Tip: We had a great room in block 27. Great accessability.

Our family of 5 just returned from a wonderful 7 night stay at the Grand Sirenis Resort in Akumal. We had a few minor issues with our rooms, but nothing that would prevent us from coming back here again some time down the road. The resort is in a beautiful location, with a stunning beach and lovely pools. The food quality was definitely more than acceptable and the service from the staff was world-class. Special mention goes to Mari in the Lobby Bar who looked after us all week and with whom we shared a lot of laughs. We took the Collectivo up to Playa Del Carmen and also down to Tulum - both trips were excellent. My biggest highlight though, was probably snorkling in the water just off the beach. I'm not an expert, but the amount of colourful, tropical fish, just 200 ft. offshore was thrilling. We brought our own gear, which I would definitely recommend. Oh, the monkeys climbing around the trees just down from our room were also a highlight. I don't know if the resort can take credit for that, but it was very cool! As I said, we had a wonderful vacation!

Room Tip: Our room was about halfway between the Lobby/Buffet and the Pool/Beach. This was perfect for us.

We stayed at the Grand Sirenis from March 2nd to the 9th and had an excellent vacation. We lucked out and had great weather all week with only 1 rainy day.
We had emailed ahead of time to request 2 upper floor rooms with king beds. When we checked in our friends were given a room with 2 double and they quickly reassigned them a room near us with a king bed with no hassles at all. We were on the 3rd floor in the 1300 block and it was always very quiet. The rooms were very large with a seating area and decent sized balcony. There is a clothes line on the balcony but it stretches across the door so if you are drying bathing suits you need to crawl under it to sit on the balcony. I had brought a bungee cord clothes line with us so we used it instead and it made it easier to get in and out of the door. Our bathroom had the frosted glass in the opening but it’s still not a great design because it does nothing to block the light in the middle of the night. The room was always cleaned very well and the fridge was restocked daily. You get some soft drinks, a large jug of water and 2 beers each day. Don’t bother leaving any pesos in the fridge for specific requests for extra water or beer because it doesn’t work. They stick to exactly what it is supposed to be stocked with no matter how much of a tip that you leave. We always tipped the maid every day though because she did a great job. The room was close to the lobby and buffet restaurant and a quick 5 minute walk to the beach if you take the interior jungle paths. It takes a bit of time to find your way around at first but once you figure out the shortcuts you can get anywhere pretty quickly. I agree with others and think that the safe and wifi should be included. It just seems like an easy thing for a 5 star resort to include since the safe is already in the room and the wifi is already in the resort. It seems like a bit of an unnecessary money grab to me.
The beach was really nice and we never had any issues getting a palapa regardless of the time of day and we were there in high season. We always sat on the side away from the volleyball net (left side if you are looking at the water) and the palapas went all the way to the back of the beach. We dive every morning so we would meet our friends on the beach at around 1:30 or so and there were always free palapas at that time of day. Yes, they were at the back of the beach but the beach is not that large. So many resorts don’t provide enough shade for the amount of guests that they have so it was really nice to know that shade was always available. The towel game was still in full force for the waterfront palapas but if it’s worth it to them to race down to the beach first thing in the morning to play that game, go crazy! The beach service was great. There were always a couple of waitresses taking orders on the beach and they would check back regularly. There was never a line at the bar and it was right on the beach so it was also quick and easy to grab our own drinks as well. Watch where you walk! There are some large rocks in the sand that are difficult to see. I stubbed my toe on one and the front of my toe split open and required a visit to the medic. Apparently 5 minutes before I kicked it, someone else did the exact same thing and she cut herself really badly as well. If they chiselled the tops off of the few that are right on the paths that people generally take, they would probably lessen some of the injuries.
The food was good. The selection was great at the buffet and we always found something to eat. There were a variety of meats that were grilled to order every night and eggs cooked to order in the morning. There were always a lot of fresh vegetables, fruits and different types of bread available at all meals. We ate all of our lunches at the pool restaurant El Rancho because the hours were more flexible than the buffet. I think it opened at 10am and stayed open through the afternoon. It was also closer to the beach so it was easier than heading up to the buffet in the lobby. We had no trouble at all getting our first choices of the a la cartes. After we dropped our bags in the room, our friends went directly to the concierge and booked the 6pm seating at the Japanese, Steak house and the Brazilian. The food at all of 3 of them was excellent and the service was great at the a la cartes and the buffet. We had a great chef at the Teppanyaki table and he put on a really good, fun show.
Based on great reviews we chose to dive with Blue Experience rather than the dive shop located in the resort. Blue Experience is right outside of the lobby so it’s very convenient and we highly recommend diving with them. They match divers according to their experience and always keep the groups really small. I’ve posted a review for them as well if you want more information. They dive out of Akumal Bay so it was nice to get off the resort most days. We also went into Akumal for lunch one day at the Turtle Bay Bakery and it was delicious. It was a rainy day but the tables were all under a large grass hut and it was a great place to hang out during a thunderstorm.
All in all we had a great vacation and would definitely go back to the Grand Sirenis one day.

Absolutely amazing week at Grand Sirenis!!!! We were in the 22 building and had no issues with it. Our concierge Marcas was amazing!!! The beach was excellent, we never went out and put towels down but always got chairs no matter what time we got there. We didn't spend much time at the pool as we had went for the beach but they were nice. The lazy river was a great addition to the resort, but be prepared to fall in!
All the staff were great, and work very hard!!!! We never had to wait for drinks at meal time or at any of the bars. The captain at the Italian restaurant went out of his way to help me as I am gluten free and he had them make me some gluten free bread. We ate at the Italian, Mexican and Cajun restaurants and the food at all of them was great! The buffet was always good as well for breakfast and supper, lunch was always just something at the snack bar on the beach which was also good.
The entertainment team was amazing!! They are super friendly and go out of their way to help you. They are there all day doing the daytime activities, then all evening doing the nightly shows yet they are always friendly. Jesus was amazing!!!! Great employee!!!
The room was very nice! Beds a bit hard, but definitely not a deal breaker!!
We were through Transat and did their free trip to the jewellery store and this was the only negative experience we had as it was our last day and they gave our seats in the van away saying we could get the next one in 5 minutes. However that did not happen and we wasted an hour sitting on the steps waiting for a ride to Playa del Carmen. And when we got there they said the bus home was full and we would be taking the later one, which would have us waste our entire last beach day so we got fed up and walked to the end of 5th Avenue and took the public transit back. Which was great, cheap and quicker as it just stops on the highway and doesn't go in to all the resorts.
This was my 4th trip down south, first trip to Mexico and was the best vacation I have ever had! I will definitly be going back!!! Everything about this resort was excellent and the staff are soooooo great!!!
Thanks for an amazing vacation!

First time in Mexico, had no idea what to expect. The truth is the hotel is 5* no matter what anybody says it is 5* the hotel is so clean and always being cleaned. We had problems in our room e.g. the bath was randomly leaking, within 2 hours the staff had replaced the whole taps of the bath and everything was fixed. The maintenance team are so quick and perfect. You also get a personal concierge who looks after you on your stay. Huge shout out to Adrian, He is true gent, nothing was ever too much hassle and he made a new country to us feel so welcome and was a great laugh and a great bloke to meet. All the staff are so friendly, watch out for a few scams with the spa though, some guy was on beach offered us a promotion deal but when we got to the spa that deal didn't exist, however was quickly resolved. It truly was an amazing hotel, they could improve on a few things e.g. safe included in the room and wifi, and more food choices at the buffet and not sure why the lazy river turned off so early everyday, Otherwise an amazing hotel one of the best in the world. Truly 5* the staff should be proud to work there.

Room Tip: Every room has its perks there all great.

My husband and I travelled to the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya from February 12-22, 2014. We travelled with another couple who we travel with annually, we are all in our 30s, from Toronto, Canada.
Friendly service
Beautiful weather (27-32 celsius and sun everyday!)
Great coffee bar (expect to wait at least 10 minutes for your coffee, everybody loves them)
We liked the beach (bring water shoes, there are rocks and reef and sea urchins, but that makes better snorkelling)
Giant rooms (the showers are awesome, jacuzzi tub is great, there is a giant hole in the wall between the bedroom and bathroom but in our relationship we aren't embarrassed about this stuff so, whatever)
Enjoyed breakfast buffet (Eric was our favourite waiter in the main buffet), all the locations for brekkie were decent, same goes for lunch
A la cartes we liked: Japanese, Mediterranean, Brazilian-by far the best food and service, our waiter was hilarious and the only staff member who thought it was great that we were celebrating our first wedding anniversary
Lots of lounge chairs available IF you get up early to find them, especially if you want a beach lounger in the shade
Cabanas around pool a nice touch
Enjoyed the drinks
Corona is the beer on tap
Maid service was great (we tipped $5 a day and I brought a small gift each day--such as perfumes, pretty toiletries, etc)
Fast trip from airport to resort-about an hour (PS we flew Transat-don't buy the $6 beers in the parking lot, they are only $3 on the bus, and there IS a bathroom onboard, they didn't tell us and we all cheered when we found out, and drank more)!
The shows are funny and sweet (we liked Grease and Lion King), the staff try really hard-so have a good sense of humour and appreciate their effort, the complainers on here are REAL JERKS-want to see a great show? Pay like the rest of us and go to Broadway, not a resort!
Cool wildlife
Each block has its own concierge to book reservations, just make sure you reserve ASAP, and be sure the dates and times are correct
Free room service, takes about an hour, food is gross but if you have had drinks, it works :)
Fun music by the pool, and pool staff/entertainment staff really try to engage you
Fabulous service and recommendation by Luis, the spa sales person. We got couples massages on the beach in the beach tower and loved it

CONS (hate giving cons!):
The WORST experience was the 100 or so Spanish kids (18 and over) that were wasted alll the time, banging on doors at 4am each night, one stole my beach hat (we got it back because she was an idiot and wore it the next day), rude, entitles brats--I know the resort can't ban people, but they could have managed them a little better...eventually a security guard followed them around to shut them up, but it was absolutely out of control (and we are NOT prudes, so I can't imagine how other reacted to them)!
Ridiculously slow check in, considering very few people were in line, we arrived around 8pm
We were promised ocean view, we probably had the worst view on the resort, facing a factory or something, I don't know what it was, I think we were in block 2300--great location, fabulous actually, just a bad view
We had some issues with our reservations, wrong dates were given to us (be sure to double check and compare)
We were told that we would have a welcome bottle of tequila, it was not there, they sent it up later upon our request
We were told that something nice would be done for us for our first anniversary, nothing was done--so we asked for it (haha, lame)--so then 2 days later they sent us a bottle of sparkling-nice but a little late ;)
Very hard bed, not great pillows--but, enough pillows to kind of figure it out
Cajun and steak a la cartes were not good. Well, the steak could have been good, but my steak was sooooo blue. So, maybe order a little more well done than usually, and you might be okay.

All in all, we had a great time. I will not return due to the Spanish young adult infiltration. I realize that it could happen anywhere, but I do believe if we went to an adults only resort, we would avoid that type of clientele. We don't mind party people, but that crowd was NOT our cup of tea (ignorant, childish, entitled).

Enjoy your stay at this resort!

The grounds are beautiful and well kept. The wait and service staff were LOVELY! They work very hard for very little pay, so you still need to tip despite resort "claims" that all gratuities are included. Rooms were fairly clean - found 2 live cockroaches, various spiders and earwigs - but dated. Beds are HORRIBLY uncomfortable and sheets are threadbare. Front desk staff are VERY disorganized. Stomach turning raw sewage smell in our bathroom and at swim up bar. A la carte restaurants are nothing special and VERY noisy - might as well eat at the buffet. Had one good and one bad meal at the Steakhouse. The wine is raunchy - Tuesday's vintage. I resorted to drinking Miami Vices, which were enjoyable and camouflaged the taste of the cheap quality spirits. The resort is also about 1hr. and 30 min. drive to the airport. Overall the wait staff and our travel mates made the experience wonderful, but I would NEVER stay here again nor recommend this resort to anyone.
