“Great Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

Just returned from a 10 vacation at this resort. First time to Myan Riv. and really enjoyed resort. Whie Sands is in the middle so easy to go either direction, did make some use of Trains to go between lobbies. Best food we have ever had at an all inclusive, only 1 of the al acarte restaurants that wasn't our favorite. Rooms are large but a little dated, clean enough but could use a little scrub around floor edges.

Room Tip: building 57

Just returned from a 2 week stay at white sands, emailed resort week before and requested building 56 pool view exactly what we wanted 5626 best view of the resort. Central to everything weather perfect only one evening of rain and onebrief afternoon of rain. Food at buffet and ala cartes excellent. Room beautiful, cleaned perfect everyday and turndown every night. Everyone should try Hemmingways at the Kantenah lobby drinks premium had to have chocolate martini every evening after dinner. The entertainment was fabulous, Rock Show really good live band and entertainment team did a fabulous show. This was our 2nd time here was disappointed the spa charges to use now but we booked amassage for the 2 of us and used the spa before our massage, still great. We had no complaints at all. we love it here and cant wait to take our grandchildren here they have so much for children to do at any age from the pool to the club and the sports from mini golf, shuffleboard, ping pong, archery, tennis soccer etc. Huge resort lots to do beautiful grounds and the best all the workers and management team are to be commended never had a rude worker the whole time applause applause..

Just returned from a weeks stay. It met all me expectations. I emailed the resort a week before arrival to request a room in one of two buildings. This request was fulfilled. Stayed on the second floor of bldg59.
Very close to beach and beach bar. Central to everything else. Room was really nice. Shower drain was plugged but was fixed within 20 minutes of being notified.
Food was good everywhere we ate except the Brazilian, we found the different meats we had too dry. We did not eat at the Sea Food. Buffets were excellent. Desserts yummy.
Beach was long, water nice. Snorkeling was ok on reef end. Loved walking the length of the beach.
Entertainment was really good. We saw at least 10 shows. The rock show is the best with a live classic rock band. Lol.. In a tribute to dead stars they spelt John Lennon Jonh Lennon.
The resort is huge, but level so walking everywhere is no problem. Grounds are gorgeous with a junglely feel when you walk along the boardwalks. The racoons are bit of a problem due to people feeding them. They like to hang out at night over by the Colonial area where one nipped at my wife's leg as she was passing by. She was just walking and it nipped at her, good thing she had jeans on that night. PEOPLE, please do as the signs say and don't feed them. You are not doing them a favour ! Iguanas are everywhere. Weasels too. The staff for the most part are very nice and willing to help in anything. One exception was the towel guy at the White Sand pool. When I went to get towels he acted like I was disturbing his conversation with his mates and never even said hola.
I would highly recommend this resort for families, singles or couples.

Dear PaulJ1,

Thank you for your kind words about our resort and for such a positive review, very much appreciated. We continuously work to make every guest’s holiday a great experience, and it is very important for us to realize that our effort is successful as it motivates us to keep doing things with love. Concerning the wild life, we try to avoid visitors to feed them, however, as you said many people do it, changing the routine of animal habits.

Thanks again and please, do not hesitate to contact us for your next visit in order to grant you the best of attentions.

Kindest regards,

David Calvo

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

We stayed at Grand Palladium White Sand on January 11th to the 18th. This section is part of a 5 resort complex in Akumal, Mexico which is approximately 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. The resort while large is very easy to navigate either on foot or with the provided trams that transport guests around the property. We are in our 60's and never felt the need to use the trams to get where we wanted to go.

Our room was a basic Jr. Suite in building 57 on the third floor which is centrally located in this section of the property. While there was ocean view (from above the tree tops) if you are looking for a true ocean view you would need to request a room in buildings 58 or 59 or in the Riviera section of the resort. Our room was clean, comfortable and our small refrigerator was stocked daily with soda, water and local beer. I know that some reviews have commented on their rooms not being cleaned by the time they came back in the afternoon, however we had no problems with room cleaning. Our room was thoroughly cleaned everyday sometimes by noon, and sometimes later in the afternoon, but usually always by 5 pm. You should remember that this is a very large resort and they alternate their room cleaning schedule so that every guest gets the same treatment. There is also a little card on the room door handle that you can turn so that it indicates that your room is ready to be cleaned.

There are 2 main sections to the resort; White Sand & Riviera and Kantenah & Colonial. There is also a section called Royal Suites (adults only) if you are so inclined. If you are traveling with small children either Colonial and Kantenah would be the best choice as the facilities around the pool and beach area have water slides and activities geared more for children, while White Sand and Riviera are more for older children and adults. There is a separate adults only pool in each section with a bar and bathroom facilities so if you really want to be away from small children you can.

Each section has 2 buffet restaurants and 4 ala carte restaurants, none of which need reservations if you are a party of 5 or less. If you have a larger group it is recommended that you request a reservation especially during high season. There is also an ala carte seafood restaurant at the beach that I believe does require reservations. We ate at the buffet restaurants in our section for both breakfast and lunch and found the food to be of such variety that I can't believe there wouldn't be something for everyone. We also ate at 5 of the ala carte restaurants for dinner and found the food quality and presentation exceptional. For the most part the service was very good, however occasionally it was slow, but that could be by our standards not theirs and they did have several large wedding parties while we were there which could explain the longer wait. However all of the servers and staff were eager to please and very friendly.

The Spa and the Gym are beautiful. I did not use the spa facilities but did use the gym. The equipment is new and in excellent shape. Just a note however. For ladies who like to use weights the smallest weight they have is 10 lbs. It would have been nice to have smaller weights in the 8 and 5 lb range as well.

We would go back to Grand Palladium in a heart beat. Everyone was cordial and friendly. I walk early in the mornings and was always greeted with Ola from any staff I met. Everyone at this resort works very hard to make your vacation enjoyable. Please do yourself a favor and give Grand Palladium in Akumal a try.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

We stayed at White Sands from Jan 18-25. Our group ranged from 90 years old to 8 years old. The weather didn't really work in our favour. It was very chilly and the pool were freezing. I wouldn't think of going south in January again. The resort was beautiful, very clean and the people were fantastic. The buffets are very good. It was time consuming to find all the different buffets and get to them either by walking or train. We had breakfast on the Riviera side (white sands only does lunch). The buffets have a different theme every night. The food was amazing at all the buffets. I witnessed the manager walking around with thermometer testing foods and changing them if needed. It was well monitored. The bread is freshly made and it tastes so good!! We did use the doctor for a cut and was put on antibiotics and very impressed with his great knowledge. We had someone in our party in a wheelchair and was told it would be wheelchair friendly but really it just makes it take twice as long to get around. You need to wait for the tram which one time took 35min and that was how long we waited after ordering the tram for a pick up. There is a pontoon boat that travels around the lagoon and many ppl were going for a tour. Since the boat needs to get around the bridges are very high. If you have bad knees it would be a problem to walk up many stairs then walk down the other side. Unless you went through the front lobby and walked to to the pool you would need the tram. There wasn't many activities by the pool and I assume it was because the place was so empty. You could get a lounge chair at the beach or pool without a problem (again it was probably the time of year). We did the Xcaret park one day and it was really nice. The evening shows start at 8:00 for the kids and then you can watch the show following but then there is a later show usually 10:15pm at another lobby. We only had the Ribs and More and Japanese al la carte and they were both very good. I"ve been to other resorts and seen the Japanese show and this one was the best. My husband said there wasn't any premium liquor at the bars only in the lobby. I honestly found this resort to be for the older crowd and less children and good times. We visited the Kantenah to the kids water park and that resort was a very happening place and my kids begged to go back every day. Although none of us actually made it into the salt water pool due to cold weather it was one of the most beautiful places I've seen. There was lots of fish in there so snorkeling would have been awesome. I would recommend this resort if walking isn't an issue and you don't mind not seeing the whole resort in one week. The food is awesome and the ppl are great. We really did have a good time I just prefer a smaller resort. I would like to give a shout out to some great people who made our holiday a good one....Victor, Rosario , Pedro (bell boys), Jose Lois, Jose and Carlos (pool bartenders). Front desk reception were perfecto!

Room Tip: We stayed in 5805 right by the ocean. It was a great location to the beach.

We stayed at the White Sands part of the resort from the 9-20 January. We went as my son and daughter in law got married here during this period. The resort is beautiful and very clean. The staff are all very polite and hard working. Knowing the Spanish language would be an advantage. The food choice is extensive and good quality. I read reviews and there were negative remarks regarding the Al a Carte restaurants. We found it was difficult if you wanted to book a table for over 6 people after 8pm at night. If you turned up earlier at 6pm you had more of a chance booking in for a larger party of people. The longest we had to wait for a table was 45 minutes. The only complaint I had regarding the rooms are the pillows! Please change the concrete bricks for something a bit softer! my son and his wife were upgraded and they had a pillow menu to choose from. The White Sands and Riviera resort are surrounded by Lagoons. If you have babies or mobility problems this resort is not for you. There are a lot of bridges. The Colonial and Kantenah side are flatter and more accessible.

I used the Spa whilst there and thought I would get acrylics for the wedding. They were terrible! The girl who did my nails, applied my daughter in laws makeup and done her hair. It was lovely, she is a much better hairdresser and makeup artist than nail technician! Don't have Cary do your nails! I was compensated with a massage as they said they could not do a refund. If you have any treatments i.e hair, nails, massage I would recommend Alexandre, she is lovely.

Be aware if you are planing your wedding there! My son and daughter in laws day did not go to plan. Their wedding coordinator was terrible!! We were all accommodated in the White Sands resort. They had their ceremony on the beach White Sands side, but we were transported to the Kantenah side for the reception. We were off of one of the restaurant, it was noisy. Why we could not be accommodated in the White Sands side god only knows! The beach bash was cancelled because of inclement weather, but if we had been accommodated White Sands side in one of the open areas off to the side we could have had the reception and the evening in one place! Very poor planning. My daughter in law was so upset by the lack of planning. The meal when it turned up was not at all what they had chosen either! And it was served incorrectly too. One side of the top table had finished eating by the time the other side of the top table had been served!! The wedding cake looked lovely, but was badly decorated, it had a bulge! Obviously they complained and the top management not wanting them to write a bad review made them sign documents to the contrary and upgraded them to the Royale Suites. Unfortunately for the management I didn't sign any agreement!

Would I go back - yes, as I said it is a beautiful resort. The conservation on the resort is wonderful. The beach is gorgeous. I just wouldn't get married there or have my nails done!

Room Tip: We were in block 59 which was right near the beach as was block 58. 57 and 56 are near the main pool...

We stayed January 16th to January 23rd. This will be a quick review.

We got the villa I requested, villa 59 room 14 this room is on the second floor opposite the ocean, but who stays in the room except to sleep. The beach was right there, a short walk. The room was very large (Jr. Suite) fridge was quiet and worked great. Bed was ok pillows were hard for us but we read that on here, no surprises. The jacuzzi tub worked great fits two people! The tv in the room was a cathode tube Zenith, we were not there to watch tv. Room was quiet and maid was good.

Check in was seamless and the bellboys very helpful. I used guest services three times two times to reserve seats at the beach restaurant and Japanese restaurant show table, very smooth. I also got our room decorated for my wife's birthday which was great the ask what time you need it for, she loved it. Thank you.

The buffet was awesome don't understand people that complain we only ate at one more al a carte which was ribs and more. We eat at the buffet for the rest of the week for supper there was a great variety of food, tasty food!

Bartenders were all great I didn't even break out my bubba there was a bar within a few feet it seemed.

There was so many different pools quiet adult pools, a more central adult pool, two large pools one with activities and louder, but on the other side of that pool it was not so loud. And our favourite pool the salt water pool.

The beach is large and clean some spots have rocks but there is a lot of areas that are all sandy great for wadding and swimming. There is a reef off the beach, a lot of fish on it and even a lot of permit and bonefish in the sandy areas. Plenty of lounges, you can stay in the sun or there are a lot of palm trees for shade if you what.

If you don't want to walk there is transportation, scheduled carts or even workers will stop and ask sometimes. We enjoyed our walks.

Loved it so much we started planing to return next year.

Thank you Grand Palladium you have repeat customers.

Room Tip: Study the map to see what villa would suit you the best, are you a beach, pool or lobby person or wa...
