We stayed at Gran Bahia Principe Coba the third week of March 2013.
Overall, it was a great experience and really good value.
The resort is huge, but somehow quite comfortable. The buildings are not overly big and the lush greenery hides things away quite nicely. The trolley transport and walking paths made getting around easy. It seemed no matter where I was on the property that a drink, something to eat, or a place to swim was only a moment away. In fact, we had fun with the size of the property in that we were exploring it all week.
The bus trip from the airport, checkin, and check out were all good experiences. The Coba lobby is a very pleasant place to sit and have a drink in the evenings.
The food was good with lots of choice at the buffets and good service & food at the restaurants. We ate at the Japanese, French, and Mexican. All were very good meals. We were a group of 10, and our reservations were handled seamlessly.
The beach isn't a "10" but it is solid 8.5. It is quite long with varied and interesting terrain. It blew hard all week but the sandbag breakwaters allowed us in the water every day. With that kind of wind in Veradaro they wouldn't have let us within 20 feet of the water. The snorkeling was excellent on the calmer days. The Hobie Cats were in good shape and the sailing was quite nice. The other beach equipment looked good as well.
The pools were large, clean, and it was always easy to get a drink at the swim ups. We had a great afternoon in the activity pool playing basketball, volleyball, doing zumba, etc.
The property is lush, manicured, and really clean. It was pleasure to walk through it. The tennis courts were also really good.
Our room was large, clean, and comfortable. The half glass shower stall was a bit of a pain and a digital safe (without the $5/day charge) would have been appreciated, but those complaints were minor. The towels were low quality. The bed was awesome, we really slept well. There was a carribean musty smell from the ac the first night, but it quickly faded and was not noticable the rest of the week..
The beach and pool chairs were a little hard to come by sometimes, but we always found a good place to sit after looking around for a minute. Again, the beach towels were not great quality.
The service was really good with lots of smiles and "ola"s from everyone we met.
As a write this I realize waht a great place this was. I believe we'll be back.
