“Peanut Allergies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

This is not a review, but an inquiry regarding a concern over my son's peanut allergy. I would appreciate any feedback in regards to the ease of being able to communicate this concern with the food establishments on this property. Thanks!

I just got back from the Mayan Riviera and a stay at the Coba. This was my second time there and I really enjoyed it. I thought all the staff was super friendly and helpful and even the non service people like the gardeners had a smile and a "ola". I agree with some of the other comments that the front desk could work on their customer service skills.

The buffet was ok but I was disappointed as it seemed like the last time I was there the "theme nights" were more specific. It seemed like the same buffet no matter what the theme. Some of the more popular items ran out and did not seem to get refilled.

The rooms were large, comfortable, and super clean all the time. The bathroom was huge, only downfall is that the glass partion in the shower does not really keep the water in the tub. I feel bad for cleaning staff for always having to mop up the floor.

I would like to give a special shout out to our rooom cleaner Lorenzo. I really liked the characters he left us everyday, and a special thanks to Miguel who worked breakfeasts in the buffet thanks for your friendly service.

The pool entertainment staff kept things fun and interesting and I never missed the beach when I was at the pool because they kept things so much fun. It is true there is no beach at this resort but the shuttle runs frequently or if you want to burn off that buffet breakfeast you can easily walk to the beach as the other hotel bumps up to Coba.

Room Tip: Stay on an upper floor unless you have disablitly issues as the ground floor is noisy, you hear ever...

My husband and I stayed at the GBP Coba February 23 to March 2, 2013. We travel every year to Mexico around the same time. For perspective on our point of view, these are other resorts we have stayed at in the Yucatan: El Dorado Seaside, Bel Air Xpuha, Cozumel Palace, and Iberostar Cozumel. This year, we found a great deal at the GBP Coba so off we went.

Accommodations. Rooms were fine – nice size, good storage space, and all had balconies. We stayed in Villa 6a and were happy with the location as it wasn’t too close to any major noise besides the ever-present cart traffic on the paths.

Food and drink. The food was extremely, extremely good (and we’re pretty picky). The main buffets were huge, like something you might find in Vegas. We ate at 4 of the a la cartes – Tequila (okay), Le Gourmet (good), La Tortuga (our favorite!) and Mikado (good). There were plenty of choices for alcoholic beverages, but not exactly top shelf liquors.

Facilities. Pools were gorgeous and the beach area was huge. Entertainment was nice with live music and dancing at the lobbies, but we didn’t check out the disco (maybe next time!). We never felt the need to spend much time off-campus, besides a trip to Akumal Beach, as we found more than enough to keep us occupied for a week. We spent a lot of time at The Iguana “Jacuzzi” bar with Paulino the bartender, who did a great job serving up drinks. Every day at "cocktail hour" around 3:30 or so, people would gather in the pool for drinks. We met some wonderful people there from around North America. So much fun, hope we meet up with them again sometime!

Service. The service was the best of any place we’ve stayed at. With maybe one small exception, all the staff bent over backwards when help was needed. I think there some Mexican Riviera resorts out there that could take some lessons from them. While we did tip nicely, we generally did not feel that there was an expectation from the staff that it was needed to get good service.

There were a few cons to this place, and I will mention them in case they are deal breakers for some of you out there. 1) When the place is full, you have to play the towel game (i.e. getting up early to reserve a palapa spot by any of the pools). For a resort at this price point, this is probably to be expected. However, there seemed to always be spots on the beach, but it was a long haul to get drinks or use the restroom from there. 2) While the temperature was fine and we weren’t too hot, our room was incredibly damp and musty, more than we’ve experienced at other resorts. When we got home, we seriously had to wash some of our clothes 3 times to get the musty smell out. Maybe the A/C needs an upgrade in order to be able to dehumidify?

Overall, we had a fabulous trip! We’ve been to fancier places and we’ve been to less expensive places. The GBP is a wonderful happy medium and a fantastic value. It deserves the good TripAdvisor reviews and I can see why there are so many repeat customers. We would definitely go back and we absolutely would recommend this place to others.

Dear KrisMN,

First of all, thank you for your comments about your stay here in Grand Bahia Principe Coba. It is an honor to read your nice words from a person with experience in travels to the Riviera Maya.

We are delighted that you have spent your vacation with us and that you enjoyed your visit at our facilities, but particularly the esprit of service and friendless of our great teamwork, Paulino will be proud for his lovely mention.

Regarding the humidity in the rooms, it is a natural issue in all along the Riviera Maya, it goes up and down depending on the season or the weather, but we do our very best to fight it day by day, also advise our guests to not reserve the sunbeds, just recently we have instructed our staff around the pool to supervise strictly that the sunbeds are not reserved.

Thank you very much for your again for your complete feedback, it will be a pleasure to welcome you again, here in your new home at the Mexican Caribbean.

Receive my warmest regards,

Ilse Saldaña

Just got back from a great trip to the Riveria Maya. My boyfriend and I stayed six nights. The rooms are beautiful and clean and I mean who does not love all-inclusive resorts.

Rooms:
The rooms are clean and the housekeeping does a good job. Plus the minibar included in the room is included. This resort is huge and you will get lost while you are here, but the grounds are lovely, so we were okay with it. There are animals everywhere. There are shuttles that take you from each lobby, but we never took them.

Food and Drinks:
Guests are allowed to try the buffets at any of the lobbies, so you never get bored of the food. You are also given a la carte meals (we got 3), which is fun. We tried the Mediterranean (which was okay), El Pescador (which was awesome) and El Portofino (which was surprisingly good). The snack bar is 24 hours and the buffets are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are so many options, I am sure there is something for everyone's palate.

Beach and Pool:
So my boyfriend and I are beach people, so we did not spend much time at the pool. Plus, the chairs at the pooled filled up much fast. Since it was the peak season, Coba beach is very crowded. If you are looking for a treat, the beach in front of Akumal is quieter and if you go to the bar at the end of the property, they serve coconuts. Get there early because they run out fast. It's also fun to watch them open the coconut. They will also add some coconut rum if you ask. The beach has crystal clear water, but it is a little rocky. I kinda wish I brought water shoes. Snorkels are a must. You are see so much just on the beach.

Staff:
Yes the staff gets it's own section. Everyone is so friendly and they are willing to help you in anyway. Drinks, food, you name it. This is was a vacation should be like.

Overall:
I would definitely recommend this resort. Although it a little far from Cancun, it's closer to all the other excursions, so it makes traveling out easier. Tulum and Akumal beach are just a short ways away and of course there are the cenotes. The resort has something for every. Massages on the beach, tennis, bikes, or if you are like us, you can sit on the beach all day drinking coconuts and pina coladas.

Wonderful hotel, very clean. Staff is super friendly, rooms are big. This resort is huge, but transportation between the parts of the resorts is very convenient. The only minus for us was that beach was to shallow, but there is plenty of beach umbrellas.

Place was beautiful. Stayed at the Coba. Was able to walk to the beach or ride the transportation. Just ask if they are going your way. The food and service was excellent to perfecto. No problem with the room. Can't believe they change bedding daily. WE don't do that at home. First night the sheets did smell a little musty (very faint) but only that night. The staff couldn't do more to please you. Perfect time of year

My husband and I spent a week here in February - beautiful beaches, fantastic food, friendly and helpful staff, property is very well maintained. Lots of entertainment to see and activities to take part in if you choose - or just relax by the ocean and listen to the waves. Lots of great pools on this property too if you prefer that. This is an ecologically friendly resort and you will see an assortment of iguanas, coati, and agouti on the grounds. They are of course wild and do not approach people, but it is wonderful to see them. This resort is huge and there are carts running constantly to help you get around. It is part of the fun to chat with the drivers as you check out what is going on all around. The whole place is safely gated and there are excursions available to Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum Ruins, etc. It is about an hour from the Cancun airport, but we travelled in air conditioned comfort and it was pleasant to see the scenery there and back. We plan to return.
