“Better than ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

This review is a little tardy as we visited the resort in September, but because we had been there so many times, I was shocked at all the improvements in accomodations and service! We always liked the Coba, but this last visit was outstanding! Premium liquor available at all the bars, even the pool bar with Jaime, Ruperto and Angel. Geronimo and his staff at Gran Tortuga were amazing along with the food. The staff at Don Pablo's went the extra mile to make my friends birthday special. The new beds were great and maid service was wonderful. Two surprises, Rafael at the Seafood ala carte elevated the dining experience with his service. Daniel at the Mediterrean, however was not ready for "prime time" My husband and I are home based Travel Agents and love accompanying clients to Grand Bahia. We are off in a month to try the Esmeralda in Dominican Republic. I hope they can live up to the standards set by Felix and his staff!

Room Tip: We like rooms around the Hybyscus Bar and quiet pool!

We stayed in the Coba bit of the Gran Bahia Principle complex in Xmas 2012 with 2 children (4 and 14 yrs, boys). The place was clean, the food was decent for a buffet, and the premises were all well kept and nice. However, going to this place you should bear in mind that it is a gated resort of industrial scale i.e. 8000 tourists in the middle of nowhere with its own shopping malls and poor connection to the outside world. So, basically you're there with all the other tourists sipping margaritas and you could be in Vegas just as well as in Mexico. We also had a room facing the motorway (so please specify you don't want this) and as a consequence we never used the balcony and it was noisy. Further the beach was a 15 minute golf cart ride away ( so saying it's on the beach is quite a stretch). Personally I would not recommend this resort or much any of the other on the Riviera Maya as it's such an industrial venture, which is also very bad for the local communities and the environment (they don't benefit from the tourism at all as all the money is spent inside these monstrous hotels).

Room Tip: Avoid rooms giving onto the motorway and miles away from the beach.

I have gone to this resort 3 times now and each time I have seen it with different eyes. Each time was in December around the same time. The first time I was blown away with the resort and all its amenities, people etc. Second time not so much and the third time very disappointed.
They are doing time shares now and if you don't sign up you don't get the service that one should expect from a resort of this caliber. I saw it the first time...fantastic!! Now if you don't sign up you are herded like cattle to the less desirable seats on the beach where you have to hoof it to the bar way down the beach where the special people can walk 10 ft to their special bar...that you can not use but we were allowed to 2 years ago.But hey if you want...pay a lot of extra money..and you get to see what it used to be like...I wont be going back to that resort again.
The service seems to be governed by the colour of your bracelet and it shows at times in the restaurants. We went all breakfast without so much as on waiter or waitress for coffee or juice...this only happened once happily. Repairs on the grass roofs is non existent ...instead...towels and signs everywhere on the floor.
Sprinkler heads broken everywhere not fixed..mud on the sidewalks not washed away..garbage strewn about not picked up..to me this is disgruntled employees not caring about their employer any more...and it shows now...not like before...it used to be immaculate.
Room service seems to take all day to be done...beds weren't made till the end of the day...even with the card out. I know you get special treats with tipping but i wont tip every day just to get a towel figure...or maybe an extra beer in the mini bar.that will cost 5 dollars a day...and its not a sure thing either.
The food at the buffets is ok...but the same thing every day...very boring... trust me.
If your not fast enough you loose out on a lounger around the pools and alot of them are broken. They wont add any or replace any broken ones.It really is a shame that they dont put money back into the resort because their 5 star ratings are going down hill very fast and it USED to be such a great place. Not any more...

Room Tip: good luck getting a room with an ocean view...that reserved for time share people who pay alot more...

This is our second time to a Grand Bahia resort (first one was in Puerto Plata). The brand remains consistently strong at Coba as well.

We checked in on the 20th only to find that our two double beds was actually a King size bed plus a couch that doubles as a bed. We didn't mind that much as they promptly brought in a crib for our 11 month old and our almost 3 year old daughter slept in the bed with us. There were little ants on our bathroom counter but we didn't really mind to be honest. Just a slight nuisance. For some people this may be irksome, but it is a tropical country and we expected it. We had 2 adults and 2 kids in our room. The other couple had the same (2 kids), but in the Golden Spa section, which had a little more of everything including their own bar, lobby and a welcome bottle of tequila. Aside from that not much difference.

The resort itself is impeccably clean and the grounds well manicured. The staff were generally very friendly, although I find the workers in Cancun a little better with English overall. It was never a barrier though.

Buffet food was very good (for a resort that caters to thousands). The Akumal beach (actually called Coba beach) was a 5 min trolley ride. The a la carte options were hard to come by because the resort was at capacity but the Japanese teppanyaki was by far the best meal. Book as soon as you arrive.

There was something for everyone, from live bands, to nightly shows to kiddie programs. The outdoor disco off the main lobby was a nightly treat. Loved every minute of it. We used the facilities at the other Grand Bahia resorts and were equally impressed.

I would recommend that Coba try to accomodate to children a little more, by providing child size cups with lids and straws, rather than handing our daughter milk/juice filled to the brim in adult cups and then wondering why liquid was spilled all over the place. As well, please make bottled water more accessible to guests, as we could not get any from reception or any of the bars, we had to call it in and have it delivered to our room often resulting in having it take hours.

We will definitely return to this resort, given the opportunity. We'd also consider staying at Grand Bahia Principe Akumal. Tulum's beach is too rocky for our liking.

Room Tip: Building 22B is very close to the lobby and faces away from all the nightly music. It's good fo...

This was our second stay at this resort, and would highly recommend this to both single people and families. I went for the dolphine experience and loved every minute of it. The beach is good for just swimming and snorkeling. The entertainment was very good. One of the best resorts that I have stayed at in the Riviera Maya.

Room Tip: I enjoyed our room by what we called the party pool, but make sure if you want quiet not to get clos...

This was the first time we have traveled as a family to an all inclusive resort. The cleanliness, service, and how the hotel is run as a whole is impeccable. Employees go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable and enjoying your stay. We didn't do any a la carte dinners because the buffet had a great variety (two in the family are vegetarians). The only thing that wasn't the greatest was that the beach wasn't as close as we would have liked, but it is still very easily accessible (golf carts driving back and forth every 10 minutes, and it was only about a 4 minute walk. We would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking to travel to the Mayan Riviera. We would definitely book here again.

Room Tip: Beach front if possible

We stayed at the grand Bahia Principe Coba from December 19-26 as part of a group of 18 people in 4 families.
On our prior trip to the Grand Bahia Prinicpe we stayed at the Akumal and the Coba compared more favourably.
Our check in was simple even though our flight was delayed and we did not arive until midnight. We had requested 2 side by side rooms by email and we did receive them. No request that we had was ever a problem. As a group of 18 the restaurant staff were sometimes required to make special arangements for seating and times at the a la cartes and they did so efficiently and cheerfully. The buffet food was above average for that type of food and the a la carte food was very good. We found the staff overall very friendly and helpful at all times. The resort and rooms were very clean tidy and in good repair. No complaints at all about most of the facilities or staff.

We would like to single out Sergio and Betty of the activity staff who were excellent. Sergio noticed our teenage daughter dancing at the outside dance floor and approached my wife to invite our daughter to be in some of the evening shows as they had a dancer missing and needed a ballet part filled. Our daughter rehersed with the choreographer Betty the dancers and performed small parts in two shows and said all the dancers were all extremely nice and helful. It was a highlight for sure for a teenage dancer from Canada to perform and be accepted by the staff there.

One thing that could be improved. The gym is a dungeon. Please make the gym as nice as the rest of the resort and move it out of a cramped basement and invest in new equipment.

I will make a few comments based on things mentioned in a few previous reviews of this resort.

yes it is big. The trams run frequently and you can easily get around, and after the amount of food and drink consumed a little walking might be a good idea. If you need to step from your room to the beach or have mobility issues you might want to consider a smaller resort.

Lack of English speaking staff. it is Mexico. The language is Spanish and some Indian dialects. Why would someone be surprised that there are employees that speak little English? Please everyone, make an effort, try a few Spanish words be patient and generally you can make yourself understood.

Watered down drinks. Yes they are and they should be, If the drinks were as strong as you might get at your local bar at home most people would be passed out by 2PM. A full day of drinking is not physically possible with strong drinks. If you really want one that is stronger, tip your bartender and tell him.

Noisy drunks at the pool. Yes. At the activity pool there are drinking games and off colour behaviour. If this is a problem, and it is not really my cup of tea, try one of the quiet pools or the beach.

Rocky shore and into the water. Absolutley. Bring a cheap pair of water shoes.

High pressure sale people at premier area. After day one they never talked to me. Just ignore them and do not engage in a conversation with them. They will go on to someone else.

Poor service. No, did not see it. The staff all try hard. Remember that the resort has a huge staff and likely a fair amount of turn over. If a waiter forgets your spoon or you don't get enough towels in your room consider that the person there barely gets a subsistence wage and probably supports a family. They are going to make mistakes. Go with the flow,

Som comments related to Mexico and not the resort itself.
By all means if you can take the Colectivo to travel. Cheap efficient and fun.
Buy attraction tickets online ahead of time and do not use a packaged tour from the hotel you will pay too much.
Cover your wrist band when in Playa del Carmen or other towns. People there might try to trick you into a shop or to buy something saying they were your waiter at the Grand Bahia, or some such story. No, they just know all the bracelets by heart and are trying to convince you that you know them and should trust them.

In summary a great family vacation at a clean fun safe resort.
