“The really fabulous, the not-so-good, and the UGLY”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

We stayed at the Grand Palladium Riviera 3/20-3/26/15. Although we stayed at the Riviera and not the Kantenah, this review falls under the "Kantenah", for a reason.

The Ugly:
We originally booked and paid for a vacation at the Grand Palladium KANTENAH, which in our opinion is the nicest of the 4 hotels on the property, not including the Royal Suites. We paid more for a stay at the Kantenah. However, what happened immediately upon arrival cast a cloud over our entire vacation.

Upon arriving at the Kantenah tired and weary from travelling, and despite providing a printed confirmation indicating our stay was booked as a Junior Suite at the KANTANEH, we were told our reservation was not at the Kantenah, but rather, it was at the White Sands. Then after being jockeyed back to the White Sands, we were told that our reservation was at the Riviera. 3 different places. The process took more than an hour. At each stop, the staff kept telling us that the stay at the Riviera was an "upgrade". It in fact, was not. We originally booked and paid for a junior suite and were placed in a junior suite in an inferior building. There was no "upgrade", but rather a "downgrade" for which we had to pay the same price.

When we booked our vacation, we specifically chose the Kantenah, and paid MORE money for the package to stay at the Kantenah. The Riviera, while "fine", was not nearly as nice as the Kantenah and had we booked the Riviera, we would have paid less. We were travelling with 3 other families, representing bookings for 5 additional rooms (besides ours), and a substantial amount of revenue for Grand Palladium. All of us originally booked the Kantenah, and all of us were downgraded to the Riviera. While we wanted to stay together in the same building, none of us were offered any accommodation or refund for our downgrade.

While we still managed to enjoy the trip because we were together as a group, none of us were completely satisfied and we left feeling ripped off.

There are a few other things about our stay that people should be aware of, both good and bad.

The Good:
The restaurants (not talking about the buffets here) and the food are fantastic. Staff are very service oriented. There are different ones at each complex, each with a different theme. Reservations are not required, except for a couple of exceptions - ask upon check in. You will have to wait a little, but it's usually not long.

The staff at all 4 complexes are very nice for the most part. Attentive, and catering to your every need.

There is a "disco" for older kids over 18 and adults in the Riviera building. Wasn't very busy while we were there, but they have themed nights and the kids seemed to have fun (we were traveling with 10 kids, all over 18 and ranging from 18-26). The lobbies always seem to be hopping at night too, which the kids enjoyed. The Riviera lobby (and the whole complex itself) was relatively quiet throughout our stay, however, with the exception of one night that they had live music in the lobby.

They have some top shelf liquor at each bar, but you need to ask for it specifically with each drink. The Kantenah has a couple of "high end" bars that have most of what you would want. Just remember to ask for what you want and they will provide it if they can.

The Not-so-good:

1. Our shower in our room at the Riviera did not have hot water. The sink and jacuzzi tub had hot water, but the shower did not.

2. There were small bugs all over on the vanity in the bathroom.

3. On our last full day in the room, our room was not serviced or cleaned. In fact, they didn't come at all until we called late in the afternoon. We had to shower in cold water using old, wet towels.

4. We booked a reservation at the Japanese restaurant at the Kantenah. The dinner was FABULOUS (best part of the trip). The Manager and host at the entrance was fantastic. And our chef was fantastic. The meal was delicious. The experience was almost perfect until something bizarre happened with our server. Toward the end of our meal, he approached our group and tried to sell us an internet video game scam that involved him using one of our PayPal accounts. We didn't fall for it, and he became visibly agitated. This whole situation was quite out of context with our dinner and inappropriate. After we were finished with our dinner (still very happy with the meal and our chef), the manager brought us a small kiosk in which we could submit reviews for the restaurant. I gave the restaurant and the Manager and Chef rave reviews. However, before I had a chance to submit the survey, our server took the kiosk out of my hands, erased the Manager's name and typed in his own name, as well as a bit of other information and then submitted the survey. I had intentionally left out his name in our positive reviews due to the scam he tried to sell us during our dinner. The whole thing was very bizarre.

All in all, the Palladium complex and all of its hotels are wonderful. Nicer quality compared to many other hotels and very good service. If it weren't for the fiasco in the beginning of our stay, we would have given the property 5 stars. But we are both professionals in our family and have learned over the years how important it is to build trust and integrity by doing what you say you are going to do. And the Grand Palladium did not do that in this case.

Having visited this region of the Mayan Riviera twice before in other Hotels, and loved it we decided to pay the extra £400 per person and stay at this fine hotel. Was it worth the extra £800 ?
We were assigned a room in the colonial side of the Hotel but we asked to change room after various issues, and they moved us to the kantenah side quickly and easily.
The Hotel is 5 Star, the Rooms compared to the other Hotels we have stayed at I am afraid are only 3 Star. But don't let that put you off, we loved it here and would return if Thomson priced it correctly.
Ok, the rooms we found very clean but very basic, and need updating, we had a fridge that didn't work and was barely cooling, a very noisy air con unit, a toilet that constantly run water into the pan unless you banged the back panel several times really hard which meant flushing at night time was out of the question, but what the room was lacking in this day and age was plug sockets, unfortunately I have to use a sleep aid which needs a socket relatively close to the bedside cabinet and there wasn't one, so I hired an extension from reception, so if you want to take a laptop, ipad, phones, or music players or anything that needs charging be aware that sockets are in short supply and the power to the room is turned off automatically when you leave the room during the day so charging is a night time activity only. There are no views from the rooms as they all face into trees bushes or the mangroves..
So that's the disappointing bit out of the way now lets move on to the rest..

This Hotel, its staff, restaurants, pools and grounds are Fantastic !! We loved the food, and the fact that we could eat a la carte every evening. Each and every member of staff had smiles for you and genuinely were happy in there work. Special mention to Jacinto who worked at the quiet pool bar everyday, he looks after each and every person around that pool tirelessly and is a credit to the Hotel..
At the main pool there are some great amenities for kids and plenty games and entertainment for adults..
The beach is very good although unfortunately during our stay we encountered the seaweed issue but the guys clearing the beach did a fantastic job under the hot sun and we did manage to swim in the seas on quite a few occasions.
During our stay we fed the Coaties Iguanas and Racoons, and even saw a snake ! we also loved seeing the crocodiles and the variety of other wildlife in and around the hotel grounds.
The evening entertainment was ok, above standard fare for the Caribbean and those guys looked great and worked very hard to bring you the shows. One other thing worth noting especially for the hotel management is that the Entertainment team actually came into the restaurants of an evening whilst we were eating on a daily basis telling us about the evenings show and asking us to come watch... not appreciated !! also the camera lady !! when people are eating its not good to keep interrupting them especially in the a la cartes !!
Sounds petty but these little things do make a difference to a stay and tend to be the things you remember.
Take the train to the White Sands side of the complex, the trains come every 10 mins and take you over and bring you back whenever you wish, loved the a la cartes over there... all were fantastic.
We really did enjoy our stay here, and as I said if Thomson bring the price in line with the other Hotels on offer we would return... If the management could take a look at the rooms in other hotels on the Mayan Riviera and copy them at this hotel they would clean up... simple as that...

We were in Villa 44 March 18th-25th on the top floor. Traveled with another couple and their adult daughter.

Weather was excellent, sunny everyday with rain early one morning.

Pluses,
+ Reception was quick and got room immediately, arrived approx. 4pm, welcome beverage (too sweet for me),
+ Check-out was quick and got to keep wrist band on while waiting for bus, breaking larger pesos notes for $20s was easy,
+ Electronic safe included,
+ Coffee maker in room, coffee restocked daily,
+ Flat screen TV in room, one channel is weather & forecast, didn't have tv on much,
+ Bathroom fixtures all operated as expected, shower good, toilets have a man's flush option,
+ Unlimited ala carte restaurants use for supper, no reservations required,
+ Beverages in room fridge restocked daily,
+ Brand name whiskey, tequila, options provided when requested at the bars,
+ Room cleaned, bathroom towels refreshed and beds made daily,
+ A/C and ceiling fan worked fine in our room, other couples room 3-doors over had trouble keeping cool,
+ Balcony with 2-chairs, coffee table and clothing rack,
+ Regular WiFi (not the premium) worked fine from our room and the Kantenah resort, sometimes the signal dropped but came back up quickly for our LG smart phone and iPad.

Average points,
= Similar to GBP and Barcelo resorts we've been at recently,
= Buffets, plenty of selection, standard fare for buffets at these resorts,
= A lot of sea grass washes up onshore but is raked up every morning so is minimal (higher than normal problem recently all along the east coast),
= Ocean water clear enough to enjoy snorkel use out by the coral areas at the beach,
= No elevators so if you have mobility issues request ground floor room,
= We don't use the pools but there was a lot of people around there,
= Evening entertainment was enjoyed by many, we didn't view much though,
= This is a resort built in the jungle it's all foliage, don't expect any scenic panoramic views from your room,
= Gecko got into our room from the balcony, we're still looking for it!

Minus points,
- Not enough electrical outlets to plug-in electronics or medical devices bedside, had to unplug light fixtures to get power,
- No bath robe or slippers provided in room like the GBP and Barcelo 4-stars we've been to,
- White bathroom towels getting grey, time to re-stock,
- I don't agree with the crocodile enclosure,
- Items at the resort shops are way over priced (bring your own lotions, sunscreens, otc medications from home or be ready to pay high prices),
- Only $9 pesos per Cdn $1 so exchange your money before getting to resort.

- No free WiFi at the CUN airport, $40 pesos charge for one hour, we declined.

Gripes about fellow guests,
- Pick up your debris, straws, butts, bottles, drink cups from the beach when leaving, you have to walk by the many trash cans and cup receptacles on your way out anyway,
- Don't "reserve" beach and pool loungers with towels etc and not show for hours.

Just returned from our Thomson booked holiday to the Grand Palladium Kantenah and for us it ticked all the boxes and would definitely recommend the resort (11-23 March). As many have noted it is a 3 in 1 resort with the a beautiful shared beach, choices of pools, and all set in a beautiful tropical type location.

Hotel: The lobby areas are beautifully decorated, large thatched areas with plenty of seating and the main locations for the restaurant, bars and shops. The shops are located in the Sands and Kantenah hotels and consist of a couple of boutique type for souvenirs clothing or snacks type foods like crisps and chocolate. The rooms are set off the lobby along in small blocks set amongst the jungle surroundings where you will see the likes of small mammals such as agouti and coatis as well iguanas going about their daily business.

Rooms: We had a lovely Spacious double with controlled air con and ceiling fan. The mini bar was stocked with beers, fizzy drinks and plenty of bottled water. The bathroom was good with bath with over head shower attachment. Each room had a good balcony space to relax and read. They also supplied kettle/coffee maker.

Pools: There are two main pools areas one shared by the Katenah and colonial and the other round at the Sands. They were both large and had the activities section away from the the main part which was good. Plenty of space to swim with pockets of jacuzzi areas to chill and of course the swim up bar.
There was also a smaller adult pool area in both the Katenah and Colonial hotels both very nice with own bars and place to get your towels.
Beauty was that we would past both on our way to the beach around 10 each day and still plenty of loungers available.

Beach:- Our favourite place to bathe and relax. A long stretch of white sand and palms it was a lovely place as you got a nice breeze to compensate for the heat. Again plenty of loungers for everyone. We bathed on the coral bit to the right as you approach the beach. It not the red sea but we found a lovely bit to snorkel round straight out from the flag pole. Its about 30 yards out and looking out you will see a dark circle of coral surrounded by a circle of sand. Its a bit rocky so if your intending doing this sort of thing get some aqua shoes. Away from the rockier Coral part there were parts that were just sandy and ideal for swimming.

Food & Drink:- There is a really nice selection of restaurants. The quality and amount you get from the buffet restaurants for breakfast and Lunch was extremely good. There are also the beach bars for lunch with good arrange of sandwiches, burgers etc. We went A/I with Thomson and in the evening had a choice of all the restaurants (around 12) whether it was at The Sands, Colonial or Kantenah. You needn't book any of them except the Japenese resturant show table (a must), fish restaurant by the beach which we also enjoyed, or the BBQ on the beach run twice a week dates vary but again nice way to dine and lovely BBQ food.
We tried 4 others and again enjoyed all with well cooked food.
As for drinks you can get what you like when you like. Cocktails are the most popular and they do a nice range of Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic, but you can get anything.

Trips: We did three trips. Firstly the Snorkel with Turtles which is run by the dive centre on the beach. For $45 you set off from the beach on a 15 mins boat ride up to Akumel Beach. Snorkeling gear and life jackets you then dive into the warm sea and within minutes you will sea the Turtles in their nature in environment. You swim around for about 45 minutes enjoying the Turtles and the fish around the coral. Highlight was swimming 3 feet above a 5 foot stingray, beautiful.
Second was the Thomson trip to Chichen Itza. It was a long day but if you get Victor and Mani your in for a lot of fun. Early start to Chichen but worth it. We had a guided tour followed by a hour to ourselves. Only disappointment was we got no site map (get one before you go) as we didn't have time on the guided part to get to the observatory and missed it because we didn't know where it was. Apart from that you have a nice lunch at the Cenote sink hole where you can bathe for 20 mins after lunch and taste really nice Tequilla. Then a stop of in the town of Valladoid which was nice although just enough for a ice cream. Overall a really good day.
Third was the new show at the purpose built Cirque Du Soliel. Beautiful setting (about 50 mins from our resort). The theatre has a wow factor and we did the Dinner and Show deal. Not cheap at around £100 but the food was exceptional and came with a large bottle of bubbly. The show itself was a lot of fun, typical CDS with great acrobats showing their talents as the story went on. Great Evening!!
There is so much to see and do along the coast that we only just scratched the surface. As your rep would say you can do certainly things cheaper if you got the time and take the buses (stops outside the hotel) so its up to you.

Overall:- As said before we loved at the resort. Thing we most liked was the warm welcome we got from the Mexican people. The staff at Grand Palladium Resorts were so friendly and we really appreciate the efforts of all the staff (and must include those behind the scenes) that work so tirelessly so we can enjoy our holiday as much as we did. Thanks to everyone at Grand Palladium Resort!!

This is a wonderful resort. It's huge. There are 4 hotels. You can use the all inclusive in all of them giving you a great deal of choice for meals and drinks. There are plenty of activities for all ages. Great for families and couples.

The check in was very slow. But once we got to our room we were very pleased. It's really spacious. The decor is very modern and neutral. not the bright colours as in the brochure. There was a stocked fridge. Coffee machine and ironing board and iron.
The bed was huge and really comfy.
My only crtisism of the bed was that the bedding didn't fit the mattress. It was too small and bunched up whilst I was sleeping. they had put a fitted sheet/ mattress cover on but it had a plastic backing which was uncomfortable and noisy and didn't fit. We removed it and just had a normal sheet. It was better but still didn't fit!
The pools are amazing. The large one at the kantenah was lovely. We tried the colonial pool and it was very quiet and relaxing so we used that pool. It's surrounded by a lagoon.
There's hundreds of iguanas walking about and troops of badgers and the birds are really pretty.
The grounds are very tropical and jungle like. With hundreds of species of trees and mangroves.
The beach is long and nice however we didn't use it, which was a shame! The reason being it was covered in seaweed
They removed it daily with a digger but the sea was full of it. I think it's a seasonal thing and probably not an all year thing!
The staff are fabulous! Very friendly and helpful. The food is wonderful with loads of choice.
Mexico is fantastic and We have done loads of the amazing excursions.

This hotel is fab. I'd defo recommend it.

We arrived March 16-21 party of 6. The place is so beautiful and huge. It has 4 hotels and you can use any of them. Each one has different things going on. Make sure to ride the cute train to all of them and also to walk around. The best thing to do to explore the place is to ride the segways. They take you all over the place and then you can go back on your own, it is worth it. The food is very good. We also went to some of the restaurants. The only restaurant we didn't like was the Bamboo, they can't even cook rice. We had an incident, nothing to do with the hotel. We took Happy Shuttle to the hotel and back. On our way home my daughter left her very expensive Canon camera in the shuttle. As soon as we were in the airport and realized what had happened, we called. The driver denied seeing anything. We also wrote the company and they said there is nothing they could do. Just be aware and careful. Otherwise Cancun is very safe, Kantenah is very safe and their workers take very good care of you. Make sure to have a mojito with rum Flor de caña dark, it is very good! The internet was very slow. The first time I was able to connect when I went to their other hotel Riviera. You have to answer questions before being able to connect. They need to come up with a much efficient internet.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice!

Lovely setting. They have done a great job keeping the natural flora and building the resort into the setting, yet well hidden so you don't see most of it from any one spot on the property. All of the rooms are located in small 3 story buildings spread throughout the property in a semi-circle around each of the hotels. A variety of fauna roam the property from the usual iguanas, to coati, raccoons, flamingos, coy ponds, monkeys on occasion, and a crocodile display area. The friendly, efficient service given by all who work within the hotel was excellent. The food in all the restaurants, buffet or a la carte was incredible. Only 'all inclusive' I've been to where the a la carte restaurants, all 8 of them, were all five course meals (salad, soup, appetizer, entree and desert, plus specialty drinks themed to each) and you could use any/all every night (no limitations of only a few per week of stay - we tried them all and found all to be excellent). The food, variety and quantity, in the buffet restaurants was fabulous. The resort itself is really made up of 4 hotels and one time share set up, so it is spread out a fair bit, but easy walking distance one to another along covered pathways, open board walks, driveways or if you want take a tram or trolley between where you are and where you want to go. Choice of sports activities, away from the beach and pools, was varied: archery, tennis, mini-putt, volleyball, rifle range, badminton, soccer pitches and on - plus they provided all the equipment and supervision when necessary. Bars were never more than a short stroll, or swim, away and wait staff regularly passed around the pool and beach areas to drink orders and deliver your drinks quickly. Each night local artisans put on their displays and wares in the open courtyard of the hotels. There were many optional excursions available to all the main activities/attractions in the area and beyond. The only slight drawback was the beach area - although they have a kilometre of sandy beach, they have only two, roped off, areas that are not rocky or coral strewn bottom (both areas were more than large enough to play and enjoy the multitude of fish that swim around you and the water is a crystal clear, so you can see the bottom even in chest deep water). The location is a little farther from Cancun airport: if you have a bus transfer that stops at other hotels enroute to Grand Palladium it could take you 90 minutes to get here, if you have a private transfer or direct transfer then it's about 50 minutes. The resort has a baby and kids program that is supervised and run by qualified individuals who really play with the kids (even involving them in an evening production that the kids star in). You can also borrow some of the equipment (stroller cars, etc.) to make getting around and entertaining the young ones easier. They have two kiddies pools (knee deep water), that included a variety of water slides, water spraying displays and water bucket dumps. Also, two adults only pools and two immense free form pools. The spa, Zentropia, according to my wife and adult daughters, was one of the best they have ever used. Would I/we go back ... already talking about it.

Room Tip: I think any room would be perfect. The room buildings are spread out enough to give quiet privacy a...
