“Great family March Break in Riviera Maya”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2014

Rule number 1: Be happy you're on holidays! and remain happy whatever happens.
Grand Palladium is HUGE. Its a little overwhelming at first, but after 1 day, you quickly get to know your way and figure out where is best to hang out with your family.
Service is very cordial and professional. Personnel smile all the time. The ones that don't - you can empathize - they work all the time, in sometimes crazy conditions.
A little tip goes a long way. A lot of tip confirms great service.
Food - excellent and varied selection of over 8 a la carte restaurants and excellent choice at 3 buffet restaurants. Suggestion if you are a family of 5: Ensure you either: 1) are a member of the Grand Palladium Club so you can make reservations, or 2) eat early (before 6 PM), or eat really late (after 9h30 PM). If you do not do this... you will be frustrated, experience drama with tired kids and will not have a good time. Follow these 3 rules and your A la carte experiences will be excellent. My husband and I are Foodies. So our very good critic means its very good food, but not up to the level of a 4 star restaurent. Since your food is part of the package, we consider the quality of food, presentation and service, considering the shear volume of vacationers every night... to be excellent. *Great thanks to Enrique, Severiano the Chef and Felipe at the Japanese restaurent. That restaurent serves over 260 people every night. Once you put this into perspective, you consider the service of the staff very proficient. Many vacationers were impatient and demonstrated frustration. Remember to play by the rules and be happy in Mexico. Its not North America and so it should not be - your on holidays!
Room service will be very good if you tip. Which is normal and expected.
Grounds are very clean and very well maintained and lush in appearance.
Main lobby service is 50/50. If you get a courteous person - you will get excellent service. Men are generally more courteous than women - for an odd reason.
Spa at Grand Palladium is a 5 star service. You will be treated like a King or a Queen.
Kids Club: they try hard, but the spirit of the staff is not there. After having experienced Club Med, where your kids will NOT come and see you EVER, because they prefer to hang out with the Kids Club staff and their friends, the Grand Palladium kids Club is considered average. Your kids will be safe. Your kids will be entertained somewhat. But the staff does not give out enthusiasm and spirit - which is required to get the kids NOT to want to hang out with you. If that is what you wish for. We asked our 3 kids (12, 10 and 7 yrs old) to go to kids club one day, while my husband and I were at the Spa. They enjoyed pool activities but overall rated the staff as being nice, polite and respectful, but lacking enthusiasm and spirit.
The beach and the Beach staff are excellent. The bar personnel at the beach are also very amicable and quite entertaining. The snack bar and buffet serving personnel are most excellent. Staff from the Diving Center (owned and operated by a private owner, but located on the Grand Palladium properties) have been the highlight of this trip. My 12 yr old son did his online PADI diving course and needed to be certified for his outer water dives. The Dive center Master diver - a German woman named Angie and the Diving Center Manager were professional, courteous, energetic and safe. My husband and I are also certified divers and felt completely re-assured throughout any of the dives. See some of the pictures that were taken by the official dive photographer. Marine life was very active and dives were performs at 10 minutes away by boat. Very convenient! Sanchez and all the boat rental crew were most excellent. I paddle boarded and peddled on the paddle boat with my daughter, while my husband and our 2 sons tried the catamaran and had great fun.
The beach was well divided into 3 zones: snorkeling, boat area and swimming area. This division is well thought of considering the shear volume of vacationers and the short distance beach available. Although the crowd was quite heavy, there were no invasion of privacy and felt our belongings were safe at all times. Having been at resorts near Playa Del Carmen before, where cocaine dealers are rampant, I felt the Grand Palladium beach area was safe and VERY private. Top less was permitted and respected.
Pools were enormous and numerous. Very well laid out. Private pools were also available if preferred. Entertainment was ok. Zumba teacher was excellent and Yoga teacher also. Pool activities were limited where families hand out. Most families took advantage of the slides and kids pool area which was very entertaining for our smaller children.
Mattress for our beds were old. Hence sleeping was not too comfortable. But overall the room lay out was functional and perfect size. Sofa bed was in leather and very comfortable for our 12 year old son. We stayed in room 4936 junior suite. When we checked in - the staff tried to put us in the Colonial suites, but after insisting we had paid for Kantenah, they changed us to what we had reserved and paid for. Thanks to Trip Advisor, we were vigilant in verifying we obtained what we reserved for.
FOR A FAMILY of 5, and the price we paid.... the Grand Palladium was a great bang for the buck.
Would we go back? absolutely.

We're on our last day of the holiday, had a fabulous time!! Complete rest and relaxation. The hotel is very nice, service is great and people very friendly. The food, for breakfast there is a choice of buffet which ranges from fresh fruit through to omelet and pancakes, lunch is again buffet style but with a large choice of fresh fish, paella or burgers and pizza.. As much salad as you like. Evening meal can be buffet or any of the al a cart the best was the Japanese and the steak house but book early or you'll be disappointed!! We spent most of our time at the sun bed/pool or beach all of which we're simply fab. There were also lots of our things to do but for us relaxation was the priority.. And the spa was amazing!! The bedrooms are nice and comfortable very clean and tidy with a mini bar but you need to being your own bottle opener (surprised us) overall a fab holiday and one we would very much like to repeat!

The hotel and facilities were really good except for the sunbeds, which, at the beach & most of the pools were the really dreadful type which are covered in canvas & don't have the facility to lie flat or sit upright - just a small range of adjustment which is useless & is very uncomfortable & gives me a bad back. The ones at the adult pool at the Colonial were comfortable but so heavy that a lot of people really struggled to move them.
We really liked the fact that the a la carte restaurants were available without making a booking (except for Japanese & seafood which could only be booked the day before use). We don't go out until around 9 o'clock so didn't have a problem getting in any of them. We also liked the fact that they published a list of which ones would be adult only on particular days. There was also a barbecue on the beach on some nights which needed to be pre-booked. There were 2 sittings - 7.30 or 9.00. I wouldn't recommend the 9.00 as we went for this one & as soon as we got there they were stripping & taking away the unused tables & kept doing it whilst we were eating and it ended up with 3 odd tables with guests sitting at them & they even took the lamp off the table whilst we were eating. The musicians stopped playing at 9.30 & when I went to get some fruit at 9.40, all the food had been taken away so we gave up. We thought that this was very rude & ill-mannered.
The service at the bars was good & there were some international drinks available at a lot of the bars & not just Hemmingway & Churchill. Hemmingway is advertised as a piano bar but the piano was always covered up & never played & there was no character to it unfortunately.
The lobby bar at the Colonial was lively & there was live music & dancing each night until 1 in the morning - the bar is open until 1 too but they start putting the bottles away before 12 & if you ask the what time they close the bar they say 12!
The train & buggies which go between the lobbies are useful to get between the different hotels & run often & late & sometimes staff offer to take you to your accommodation block without asking for a tip but were really pleased when guests did. We found that none of the staff seemed to expect a tip which makes us want to give them more.
Although it is a nice idea that it is such an eco friendly hotel, the fact that the trees were so close to the pools & the beach meant that they were in shade really early each day which seemed a shame for people who wanted to be out in the sun as late as possible.
There were weddings most days & there was a chapel & 2 places on the beach for weddings but we thought it really bad planning that one of them had the banana boat in the background which we would have hated to see on our wedding photographs.
The beach was a lot nicer at one end than the other. At one end there were a lot of rocks. There was then a stretch with a warning sign to look out for other rocks. Then a sign warning of stingrays in the water & to wiggle your toes to make them move away. The next bit was better but be aware that there were pieces of coral even there which I unfortunately caught my foot on & cut the underneath which made it very painful. The left side as you look out to see was the best. There are lots of big fish to see & some which jumped out of the water which was lovely to see.
We stayed in a standard room in the Kantenah which was adequate - 2 queen size beds, bathroom, free digital safe in the wardrobe which also contained an iron & board. There was a minibar with soft drinks, water & a couple bottles of beer & this was re-stocked daily. These rooms had been re-furbished but We didn't like the fact that there was only 1 armchair in a room for 2 people so we had to use the dressing table stool or bring in a sun lounger - thought this spoiled it somewhat. The bathroom was fairly basic with a shower over the bath but unfortunately the shower head would not stay up on the rail & sat in a relatively low position. Also, due to where the shower door was situated, wherever the shower head was angled, water ran over the side of the bath & all over the floor. The air conditioning worked well which I was thankful for.
Please be aware that the vacation club offer guests a "free breakfast" at the Royal Suites with a voucher of 50% off at the spa but as soon as people finish breakfast there is a hard sell to sign up for time-share with more pressure being put on as the time passes. We didn't go for this but spoke to people who did, including one older couple who had signed up but were having serious doubts that they had done the wrong thing.
We stayed at the Royal Suites at the Grand Palladium in the Dominican Republic & thought that was a much better layout as the accommodation, pool & private beach area were all together but here they had to go to the opposite end of the hotel for their private beach area which was enclosed with trees & looked far too shady & they then shared the bar with standard guests which just didn't make it seem special at all.
Overall we would recommend this hotel & although we didn't travel with children, there were some slides at the main pool which looked good. We weren't as keen on the restaurant by the main pool as it was outdoors & there were lots of birds on the rafters waiting for people to move away from the tables & then would swoop down to take food off the plates on the table & from the waste food stacked on plates at the waiter station which for some reason was not put straight into a bin as in the other buffet restaurants which was bad practice.

Room Tip: Blocks 1 -5 at the Colonial were well placed for the adult pool with the comfortable sunbeds. The vi...

This was our first trip to this part of Mexico. After looking over many Hotels we picked Grand Palladium Kantenah. From the moment we checked in to the day we left, we had an awesome time. The beach was awesome, food was awesome ( A la carte, or buffet), people were awesome. We had the best time at the pool bar. The bartenders, Jacinto and Mario were awesome.......had so much fun there before lunch, great drinks (shooters), such a blast!!! Can't wait to go back next year!!!!!

We just returned from an amazing week at the Grand Palladium Kantenah. It is a HUGE complex with five resorts. You can use all facilities at all resort except for the Royal Suites.

Check in was quick, friendly and easy. We were in room 4914 which is a junior suite on the third floor of building 49. Access to everything was reasonably easy from here. However, the wooden walkways were sometimes slippery and very hard to see on at night. We chose to stick to the paved walkways when possible. Remember that the main walkway is the covered walkway and stick to that and you will find your room more easily. After the second day we pretty much had the layout figured out. Our room was large and clean. It was cleaned every day except one. We had a flashlight which was very helpful because the power went out several times during the week and it is DARK.

The buffet restaurants were good. There was always something to eat. The donuts in the morning and the creeps at night were amazing. We went to the Ribs and More, Mare Nostrum, and Brazilian restaurants and loved them. Have the shrimp at the Mare Nostrum. It is amazing. We went to the Sumptori restaurant and found it just okay. We tried to go to the Italian but could not even get close enough to register for a spot. You do not need reservations but there are several groups who can so the restaurants fill up fast and there is often an hour or two wait. Not a fan of this system of accessing the restaurants.

The pools and the beach are simply amazing. The ocean is warm and the sand is soft and white. It is great for swimming and there are lots of little fish to see. There is also a rocky area where the snorkelling is great.

The entertainment in the Colonial lobby at night is great and you can dance there. The white party at the salt water pool was fun but no one could ever tell us the time for the show. We were told 9:00, 10:00 and 10:30 and the show actually started at 10:45. The actual show was a little lame so we left before it ended.

We would certainly return to this hotel. The hotel is clean and the staff is amazing. Go to the Grand Palladium. You will not be disappointed. Lots of walking. No weight gain if you go here!

Family trip with two daughters aged 7 and 10. There where so many things to love about this resort and I will say that both our daughters truly loved this place. I think with any all inclusive there are key things people want to know and I will break them down here:

1) Grounds/location: 5 stars. Truly spectacular and one of the nicest resorts I've ever been to in this regard. Very tropical and naturally beautiful. If you want to feel like you are in paradise....this is the spot.

2) Cleanliness: 4.5 stars. I was amazed at how clean this place was. The workers work extremely hard and you would be hard pressed to find a bug or a mess...or a small piece of garbage for that matter. I dropped 0.5 stars because our room tended to always have a gritty sand left behind day after day (well...it is a beach vacation so perhaps a little nitpicky). Still though...I think that could be cleaned up a little better each day. And also our toilet tended to have a horrific smell of sewage pretty much every day.

3) Food: 3 stars. This place has 8 al la carte restaurants and I haven't got much good to say about any of them. They spend a lot of money on decor so the pictures look nice but the food would barely be a notch above your local diner (in fact...probably worse). There are numerous buffets throughout and quite frankly...I HATE BUFFETS!. I never really realized how much I hate them until this trip. In particular, I love my morning breakfast and a good cup of coffee in the morning and I would much prefer to have a sit down and be served breakfast then have to muscle myself around the feed trough looking for food. Really not relaxing at all. And...the coffee was some of the worst coffee I have ever had...anywhere...in my life.

4) The pools: 5 stars. They recently added a water park (slides etc) which is really well done. Our girls loved it. And the pools at both the white sands and Colonial are really spectacular. They even have a couple of more private pools. They also have a salt water pool (natural) where the fish can come in and swim so young kids can snorkel. Quite frankly....I think snorkeling in the ocean right off the beach is better. The salt water pool is a little grungy I think.

5) The drinks: 2 stars. water, water, water. Under normal circumstances I might have 3 drinks and feel a little buzz. Here....you'd have to have 12 drinks in under an hour to feel like you had any alcohol! I swear there is no alcohol in the drinks at all. The beer is sol which is barely passable but I get that being Canadian....I expect good beer. YOU WILL NOT GET GOOD BEER HERE. And the wine almost made my wife and I gag at one point.

6) The beach: 5 stars. It's wonderful with just the right amount of waves to keep it fresh. Several times these big fish just swam right up to us. Our girls loved it! The beach is long and great for a stroll. We could always find a place to sit even in the high time.

7) the service: 4 stars: The people of pallidium do indeed work hard. But there where times when if I had to ask a question, there was this odd feeling of "bugger off" that permeated from quite a few of the staff. I could not quite put a finger on it but generally I would classify the service as efficient, grudgingly polite at best. There where exceptions....the crew at the kids club are amazing. Friendly and make you feel perfectly safe if your kids want to spend a couple of hours there.

So in summary:

pros: tropical, clean, nice beach and pools

cons: the food and drinks stink. And I really mean this...

We stayed here last year for our honeymoon and really enjoyed it so much so that we have just got back (Sunday) after another very nice trip to the GP, we stayed in the Riviera section last year but decided to try the Kantenah this time, we would not hesitate to come back but there was the odd disappointment here and there.

First disappointment - check-in, my god this took a long time we were 2nd in the queue with 2 people being seen to as we arrived, quite why it took about 25minutes before we were seen to is beyond me, the process at the GP seems very straight forward, fill a form out and get your wrist band, simple, if the form filling is taking time then maybe its time to give people these forms as they arrive let them fill them out in the reception and then let people check in as they return with the completed form.

The room was very nice, with a nice king size bed, ample hanging space etc, the grounds were just as impressive and nice to walk through spotting different animals as you go.

The beach areas nice and clean and so are the pools on all sides, the new kids pool/area is also very nice and a big improvement, why can't we adults have some water slides of our own to go on?!

Food in general was just as good but also this is one of my disappointments, on our first night we were hungry and tired it was also late by the time we had unpacked, so went to the Kantenah buffet, POOR is the word i will use reasonable choice but the food was not even warm, the baked potato i has was hard, very hard! we tried breakfast the next morning again most things were lukewarm at best we never ate in this buffet again. The Colonial was better but the best buffet restaurant is the in Riviera section, the only buffet were you can get freshly made pancakes with, choc chips, coconut, fresh fruit etc dropped in to is as they cook it for use, more stations cooking fresh omelettes, all the buffets are defiantly not equal, so we took the 10 minutes or so stroll over to the Riviera buffet each morning.

We mainly ate in the al a cartes in the evening were the food is good, worst meal for me was the steak house, T-Bone, very very thin and 1 side very fatty, the wife had a rib-eye much thicker, not much fat and she said was very nice!

Might as well get the other moan out of the way, the Spa, to access the Spa you now have to pay $10 per person every time you want to use the sauna, jacuzzi area, while the area is very nice i feel this is just a grab for money, that is unless you want to become a travel club member then its free again, thanks but no thanks, while the Spa is very nice is it not worth $10 per person per visit, no other hotel of this standard or slightly less that i have visited in Europe has a charge, so we did not bother this year, and while ever there is a charge we will not be using it.

Also the whole resort did seem a little understaffed this year, this along with the reasons given is why i only gave 4 out of 5 this time.

It still is a good place to visit and i would not hesitate to return should we visit this area of Mexico again.
