“Tropical paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2011

This was a great family resort - tons of things for everyone of all ages to do (snorkelling; kayaking; parasailing, kids club, mini-golf, shows, etc). There were lots of lizards around, tons of birds and other wildlife so lots to look at. You truly felt like you were in a jungle atmosphere but at the same time, enjoying the comforts of a lovely hotel. Staff were all really friendly, helpful and eager to make your stay as lovely as possible. A mistake in my reservation was the only drawback - I was supposed to be booked in the Kantennah resort with my sister/family but I was put in the Colonial side - not a big deal, as the Colonial was still great but it was on the other side of the resort as where my family was in Kantennah. Regardless, we would definitely go back. It was a spectacular week!

I read a lot of the reviews on the Grand Palladium before we arrived. Don't let these put you off going! The honest truth is, it is wonderful, a little slice of paradise.

The downsides are:-
It is big. Don't under-estimate how huge it is. This is five hotels in one massive complex.
This is not a small and personal resort, so if you want to go somewhere where the bar waiter knows your name and what you drink, this isn't the place for you.
It might take you up to an hour and a half if you tried to walk along the perimeter fence.
It's also a long way from Cancun airport - approx 2 hours.

The upsides are:-
Secure and gated complex, everyone is booked out by the gate security people, so the hotel knows that you're off site and where you are going to.
Our room was adequate, reasonably spacious with two double beds, a minibar, a tv and an IPOD docking station.
Beautiful jungle style grounds surrounding most of the apartment blocks, with amazing native birds and wild animals. Many of the paths to the beach are wooden walkways on stilts passing through the mangrove swamps, ensuring you get more opportunities to see some of the wildlife.
Several amazing swimming pools, many with swim up bars and jacuzzi areas.
The restaurants were great and offered various themes- we tried them all (!) and our favourite was the El Dorado, which was a steakhouse.
The beach was fantastic, hammocks and sunbeds galore plus lifeguards on duty all day.
We snorkelled over the reefs and saw a myriad of different fish including sting-rays and barracudas! If you love snorkelling, make sure you take a taxi to Akumal. It does't look like much of a place, but the turtles are worth making the effort to go!
In summary, it's a great resort but very large. They do run mini-trains between the four main hotel areas if you are too lazy to walk, but you can cover the distance easily once you learn some of the short cuts around the resort.
You get what you pay for, and we had a great experience at the Grand Palladium.

I stayed at the Colonial with my sister and my daughter from Feb. 17-24. This is my second time in the Mayan and the Palladium has been the best so far. From the time we arrived until our sad departure, we were impressed with the service, the food, the drinks and the wonderful staff who went out of their way to treat us very special. A few honourable mentions are Wilburth, Rolando, Luis, Santiago, Miguel and I can't remember the other tall fellow in the entertainment crew - these employees stood in our minds. We were booked in a standard room but on arrival, we found out we were upgraded to a junior suite (Villa 2107) which is very close to the Colonial main pool, lobby, etc. so we didn't have to walk very far. The Colonial bar is where the action is and we also had lots of fun sitting at the Riviera bar with Rolando and Luis whose level of service is outstanding! I will return to the Palladium again very soon but next time I would want to stay for two weeks - one is just not long enough. I am a wine lover and really liked the house wine - I didn't feel the need to order a bottle from the extensive wine lists. We ate at the Japanese, Mediterranean, Steak House, and Mexican - all were very good and we also enjoyed the buffets - breakfast was mainly at the Colonial buffet. If you can't find something to eat at these buffets, then I can't imagine what would make you happy. The main pool is fairly deep so if you are not a swimmer like me, then take a floatie with you to give you some peace of mind. We enjoyed the snack bars as well, especially the one on the beach at White Sands - delicious wings, quesadillas, guacamole. We went into Playa del Carman one evening to shop and ate at Carbonicitos which was amazing - the best margaritas (strong) and delicious authentic Mexican food - we took the Collectivos to and from for only $3 US per person and felt very safe.

Thorougly enjoyed our vacation and we certainly didn't want the week to end - I can't wait to return to the Palladium. The Palladium knows how to do it the right way! Thanks so much Palladium and we look forward to seeing you again!

Anyone wanting to travel to this hotel will not be disappointed. The hotel is a large complex however theres plenty of little golf buggys & train to take you from place to place and they run frequently. The hotels have many bars and restaurants to enjoy no reservation required. The main pool near the beach is great with intergrated beds into the pool incase you get too hot. Theres plenty of entertainment too and you are not forced to join in which is good. There is an onsite Padi school which is also reasonably priced and the people as a whole are brilliant. The hotel staff are very friendly and will do anything for you, the restaurants are very clean and always have hand sanitizer. The childrens club was good too although I don't have children they did make a big effort with them, there is a park on the beahj which is all gated off and they do various activities with them around the pool. There's loads of wildlife too, little racoon type animals, iguana and lots of coluful birds.
The spa is also super lovely & relaxing , jacuzzi, sauna etc along with a lazy river you can swim along and also integrated hydro pools along the way. Spa would have much better minus the "loud americans". The gym is also good as well with plenty of iced tea, waters and juice to drink if needed.

Overall great experience was great, we are actually in the process of booking to go back in December.
The hotel is in a good location for local attractions too Xel ha is great of you haven't been and you can swim with the dolphins

This is our 2nd vacation at a Grand Palladium Resort. We stayed at the GP Palace in Punta Cana last year.

We chose the GP Colonial section because it is located in the center of the resort. Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a Junior suite on the 3rd floor of the villa close to the beach. PERFECT! The cathedral ceiling suite which overlooked the resort was a great beginning to our trip.

The beach is very long which is great for walking. Unfortunately, it is only swimmable on one end of the beach. I suggest bringing beach shoes if you wish to swim anywhere on the beach as there is alot of coral - very sharp coral. This though, is fabulous for anyone who wishes to do some snorkeling, as we did. There are alot of fish out there - BIG and small.

Restaurants - Food is great. No complaints on the food whatsoever. There is something for everyone. I do have a issue with the reservation system at the a la carte restaurants. The guests staying at the Royal Yucatan section of the resort could call in to make reservations at these restaurants. The other guests staying in the other sections had to get in line on the same day to make their reservations. Only to realize once trying to make their reservation that all the "decent time slots" where taken up by the Royal Yucatan guests. So, we'd be left with either the early seatings (5:30pm) or late seatings (9:30pm). This was more prominent at the Japanese restaurant than the others. I believe this reservation system needs to be reviewed by management at the resort. Alot of guests are frustrated over this.

Activities are in abundance. There is something for everyone. We especially enjoyed the morning stretching session at the Colonial Pool. Staff are really well trained and good instructors.

Staff are very polite and respectful. We met a few sour apples but you get that anywhere. We didn't make a big deal out of it. Overall, the staff is wonderful. We especially enjoyed Luis from the front desk reception area and our housekeeper, Angeles. She kept our room immaculate. She would surprise us everyday with her very creative towel art - monkeys, lamb, fish, banana, etc... That would put a special spark in our day!

The size of the resort is impressive, if not huge. If you don't like walking, this is not the resort for you. Because we are very fit people, we rather enjoyed the walking very much and the vegetation on the resort is incredible. It's like walking through a jungle. If you don't feel like walking, just take one of the trains that regularly circle the resort or for a tip, one of the bellboys will drive you to your destinations with their carts.

The transfer from the airport to resort (and vice-versa) was approximately 1h 20mins.

All in all, this was a great trip. We'll be returning in the futur.

PS. I've been inquiring about the GP in Jamaica for next year!!! :o)

We stayed here for a week in Feb with some friends. I was very impressed with the whole experience. This is my 3rd trip to Mexico, and this was on a par with the others if not slighlty better. There are 4 resorts in one here - the Kantenah, Colonial, White Sands and Riviera. We were in the Colonial, whose lobby is right next to the Kantenah, the other two were together in a different part of the resort. But you can use the facilities and restaurants anywhere in the whole complex so I can only guess the rooms are different. Our room was more than adequate. We had a problem with one of the closets sliding doors which we reported and was fixed on our first night. The staff were always pleasant and attentive, and the cleanliness of the room was excellent. The standard of the restaurants differed a little but in the main all were acceptable, the Mediteranean one was our favourite and definitely the best food. The buffets were great for breakfast, there was one in each resort area, and you could get ANYTHING you could imagine, there was an 'egg' lady cooking fresh ommlettes and fried eggs, fresh fruit, pastries etc etc.. The beach bar we found great for lunch or a quick snack. And NO tummy troubles all week! In the buffets they sanitise your hands as you enter - excellent idea when people are handling shared food and plates! The drinks were good - you could find branded drinks and liquors in some bars, there were adults only bars and pools for those who prefer the peace and quet away from kids. There are two main pools, both huge and spotlessly clean, one very quiet with a few activities, and one a bit more lively with something going on all the time so the choice is yours. We travelled with Thomson from the UK. The outbound flight was too long - 11.5 hours! don't know why, I'm sure it was only 10 last time I went. Flight home was only 9 hours. There is good legroom on the plane - 33ins, but the leather seats are quite hard! Transfers from the airport were great - minibuses so none of that dropping off at many hotels. Took one hour 10 minutes with one drop before our hotel. Thompson rep in the resort was GREAT. Not pushy, very friendly, happy to impart information without trying to sell us trips. So overall a very good experience. I would DEFINITELY recommend this resort.

a lovely relaxing holiday! resort was great, with a great choice of food, entertainment etc in each part of the resort. the staff were lovely especially rosa and alfredo at one of bars in the colonial go check them out, a great atmosphere. there is alot of walking between the resorts but they do have a little train and bus to pick you up. we enjoyed the walking as that was the only exercise we was doing!! the beach was lovely and clean. probably the only bad thing we could say about the holiday was couple times we had to ring laundry to say we didnt have towels in our room, but i think that is being really picky.
