Wow where to start. We stayed from 16th - 26th July and travelled with friends. I think after reading the reviews prior to going the other holidaymakers must have stayed at another hotel.
Check in - Easy and quick and we was given a room in the Colonial, which after reading reviews about how old fashioned they were my heart sunk, we had nothing to worry about, the room was lovely, clean, big with flat screen TV, I-pod dock, hairdryer, iron and ironing board plus a fridge with beer and soft drinks that was stocked up daily. Our safe had been left shut so we couldn't use it 1st night but no drama as they changed it for us the next day, I did leave things out in the room and they weren't touched so very safe.
The restaurants/bars - There are the main buffet restaurants, which have a vast choice of good food which changes daily for the evening meal. The Ala carte restaurants are amazing, 2 of them you have to book for but the others you just turn up, if you want to eat early then I suggest you go when they open and if there is a waiting list they give you a buzzer which lights up when you table is ready. Males have to wear long trousers in these and they are strict about it. We tried the Mexican (La Adelita), Steak House x 2 (El Dorado), Ribs and More x 2 (American and my favourite), Italian (Portofino), Brazilian (Rodizio). The last 3 are in the Riviera but its only about a 5-10 minute walk or alternatively you can get the buggies that drive round all day.
We used the beach bar and swim up bar mainly in the daytime and the Colonial bar in the evening. The staff are amazing especially Luis behind the bar, Lucy and Irma are brilliant waitresses, nothing was to much trouble for them, a credit to your hotel. Alot of the drinks are name brands plus Champagne is also included (which you can have at breakfast!!) and a very yummy cocktail menu.
Entertainment - 2 shows every night, 1 in the colonial and when that has finished the other 1 is in the Riviera, so jump on the train and go across to it. They are repeated over a 2 week period but it didn't bother us as the shows were very good and we enjoyed watching them each night. The staff here work so hard and seem to enjoy what they do. Very friendly and do try to get you involved but if you say no then they leave you alone. We don't have children but it looked like the kids club/entertainment was very well organised.
Pools/Beach - We used the main pool in Colonial/Kantenah and the beach. We found beds quite easily the 1st week but once half term started in UK it got very busy although you can find the odd spare bed and move to area you require. The main pool is where the daytime entertainment takes place so if to noisy for you then there are other pools around the complex plus adult only ones. Beach is very clean and nice if you want a breeze. Take swim/beach shoes as it is fairly rocky to get into the sea. The water in pools and sea is very warm. There are a lot of activities to do on the beach and my husband really enjoyed the snorkelling especially at the salt pool.
Grounds - The hotel is in the Jungle and has a lot of walkways through the trees etc. which is really nice and very well looked after. They have Flamingos/crocodiles on site plus all the other wildlife... Fish, pretty butterflies/birds, Iguanas, Coatis, Agoutis and mosquitos !!! Take lots of spray with minimum 50% deet, we took an antihistamine daily which seem to help as normally we get bitten to pieces but seemed to be very lucky.
Weather - It was fantastic but very humid, which can take your breath away on occasions. We had one daytime storm which lasted about 30 - 45 minutes and a couple of evening storms, pretty awesome to watch. Apparently they have 40 days of really hot weather and we experienced 5 of those days and it got hotter and hotter so I dread to think what the temperature would've been by day 40. Make sure to drink plenty of water to stop dehydration as it is very hot.
Lindsey was our First Choice rep and she is extremely friendly and helpful and is based on site most days, if she isn't there the Paulo is, who is equally the same. We booked to go to Xel-Ha and our friends went swimming with dolphins and Lindsey arranged it so we could go on the same private bus with them instead of the coaches that goes around the other hotels.
Overall - This is an amazing place, very big resort with lovely grounds and staff work very hard. I reckon it is probably the best all inclusive hotel we have been to and if we didn't like to try different places then we would go back as have no complaints at all.
