“Great time!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

We went for a wedding which was lovely! We stayed in the Colonial section. Everything was very nice including the weather. We were at the beach almost every day and were able to snorkel right off the beach and see a number of fish. The beach itself was beautiful, the sand and the water. We had to do some walking but it was just the right amount. If we wanted to get to the other sections, we could easily get a ride on one of their shuttles/golf carts. It is close to lots of attractions. We would definitely like to some back and probably spend 2 weeks.

We stayed here last May and enjoyed it so much we are going to their sister hotel in Jamaica this May .
Although the site of the four hotels is massive which can be off putting at the start, the choice of pools, eating options, numbers of bars and entertainment choices make you really feel that you have gone to a resort and not just an hotel.
The junior suite we had was nice and big and very well equipped (filled fridge/ironing board/ coffee maker/ jacuzzi ) although the style of the rooms looks a bit dated and didn’t have the wow factor.
The food was of excellent quality and so many choices for everything from a quick snack to some great a la carte restaurants .The main buffet restaurants were very good and had lots of nice touches such as fresh smoothies made to order and champagne for breakfast which was a nice treat. Everyone will have their favourite a la carte restaurant ours ended up being the Mexican, Jorge the singing waiters contribution was a nice touch. Apart from the Mexican we did feel the a la crates could have been themed a bit more and more attention to things like music should be considered , the Chinese one had no atmosphere at all !
We loved the different sun bathing options from the great long beach to the big lagoon pool to the relaxing saltwater pool with Bali beds and the wonderful pool area at the Spa, eventually we decided our favourite was the adult pool just over the bridge from the main pool , totally relaxing and very comfy beds (although only room for about 24 people so don’t get there too late) and had great service from the barmen, Santos (because the hotel is so big it’s harder to have a connection with the staff as you do not see the same staff all that often).
Because of the size of the complex it never seems busy and in the areas such as the a la carets even when it is busy they work really well with the buzzer system. Loved not having to book these restaurants. There are so many options for bars and the sports bar was excellent. We were there as Chelsea won the champions league and it had a fantastic atmosphere. You can get all premium drinks from selected bars at no extra cost .
The grounds are very big and at quiet times of day you get to see everything from wild pigs to the geckos and coatis. You are on the edge of the jungle so be prepared there will be some creepy crawlies too (my wife didn’t like the giant ants !).
A must is doing the Segway tour at the start of your holiday it was good value and fun and you get to see all the areas around the hotels and will get your bearings , also take the free cruise boat trip at sunset from white sands . Make sure to use the free Spa area at least once it was excellent .We also went on the jungle safari trip, be careful if you book this one although it was great to see the turtles in the wild, the trip passes through lots of real jungle many people were splashed with a black tar like substance from the palm trees which Staines your clothes and if you get any on your skin it will stick and burn your skin , the tour reps on the trip just dismissed it saying it would wash off ….this was reported to the First Choice reps at the hotel who also showed little interest but that was general for the reps here , as the hotel s are so good I think they have so little to do at the hotel they have become lazy.

We used the land trains from one hotel to the next which were very good , however we found the hotel buggies a real frustration ,they decided who and when they wanted to offer their services ,one second saying no to a lift only to then offer lifts to someone else within a minute ,sometimes stopping to pick people up after they have just whizzed past you …not good !

We had the best holiday here. The food, service, beaches, well everything was amazing. It is in the most picturesque location and only a short bus/taxi ride away from everything that you would want to do, go, see. Can't wait to go back!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Just got back from a two week holiday at The Grand Palladium. We stayed in the Katenah section of the hotel, which is one of the 4 sections. The others being Colonial, Riviera and White Sands. It seems the european travellers stay in the Colonial/Kantenah sections and the American/Canadian in the White Sands/Riviera. We arrived a day late after a 23 hour dealy from First Choice. Arrived at the hotel late afternoon to be greeted by a welcome cocktail. Very much needed. As we checked in we were told we were being upgraded to a Junior Suite for free, although once we got to the room it seemed like the basic the hotel would offer so i wouldnt like to see the basic room. When we arrived at our room our keycards wouldnt work, so we had to get a cleaner to let us in our room, then had to walk back to reception for new key cards. The following day as i walked into the bathroom one of the tiles in the ceiling fell onto my head resulting in a lump on my head. Spoke to reception and they got someone to go out and fix it right away. They sent me free of charge to the on site doctor and also gave me a complimentary voucher for a free massage. Overall not the best start to the holiday, however it did get a lot better. We spent most of our time around the Colonial/Kantenah pool. The pool is massive and has a great swim up bar. There were just enough sunbeds for this time of the year, however if it was any busier would be quite hard to get some sunbeds. It seems people from the White Sands/ Riviera side come to this pool during the day. We went over to the other pool one day and it was virtually empty and had loads of sunbeds available. The beach is amazing however in the middle there is a little rocky section, otherwise this would be the perfect beach. Gets pretty full quite early so you would need to be out before 9:30am to get a sunbed. Pedal boats, Kayaks and snorkelling equipment are all free. Parasailing is available but not run by the hotel. Cost us 1600 pesos for two of us. There is a salt water pool available but is a bit of walk to get there. You can get the train from the lobby and then walk the rest of the way. As for food this is the best all inclusive hotel for food. Always different food available in the buffet restaurants, and about 10 a la carte restaurants. Ribs and More was the best a la carte and the best steak i have ever had. We also went to Rodizo (Brazilian) Portofino (Italian) Bambo (Chinese). We went to the beach barbeque which is held on Wednesdays and Sundays. You have to make a reservation for this at guest services. Overall this has to be one of the best holidays we have ever been on. We would most definately come back one day and would recommend this to anyone!

Room Tip: Ask for a king size bed as the standard double beds are to small for 2 people to sleep in

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

First, let me say that I was very excited to have chosen this resort because the reviews reflected everything I wanted for our vacation. I purchased my trip back in September, and kept following the reviews weekly until we left in March. The reviews are consistently good, and there is a reason for that. The resort is very nice, and offers a lot of choices. The quality in food / drinks / installation is consistent throughout the resort. Before going, I was certain that this resort would now become my home away from home. The fact is, while it is a magnificent resort, with quality installations, great food, great service and all, there are other resorts I’ve visited that I would go back to before choosing this one. Don’t get me wrong here, I really loved the resort, and I would go back in a heartbeat, but I wouldn’t pay extra to go there if I found a great deal for another great resort.
Now let me get done with the bad first...

1. The bridges and wood pathways need fixing. It is not dangerous, but could become very soon. Yellow “Danger” tape doesn’t do the job of a fence. It is OK to put it temporarily, but at some point, you have to fix the fence.

2. While most servers do a fantastic job, many just don’t know what to do, or simply don’t care. (We’ve seen this mostly at the Colonial buffet). It’s like they have too many tasks, and can’t do them all… (or expect somebody else who has those same tasks to do it for them…) We found the service to be much faster, and friendlier at the White Sand buffet. The service at the Bamboo Restaurant was AWEFULL, and the “Sushi Nazi” (ref: Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi) at the salad bar was just crazy… It was like he didn’t want anyone to eat his precious sushis… We have to name some amazing workers though as most of them do a fantastic job, but as always, a few stand out from the crowd and just go above all expectations... Filomena at the Colonial Pool Buffet was amazing. Marcos at the Brazilian restaurant as well (never seen a guy enjoy so much his work. Always smiling, and almost running to serve you…). Freddy at the Isla Pool was so friendly, and made amazing drinks. Antonio at the White Sand Lobby bar is very friendly, and loves to chat about his country. Luis at the Colonial lobby is also great. You will find most workers very friendly, and helpful, but those 5 are the ones we most easily bounded with.

3. 3? Nope… that’s it. I’m really not sure why people complain about the beds or the pillows… We had 3 pillows on our bed which were great, and then 2 more in the closet to choose from. We did not even try the pillows in the closet. The ones on the bed were just fine. Hard bed? Soft Bed? Well, ours was fine, and I believe whenever you sleep in a new bed, you have to accept the fact that it is not YOUR bed, so of course it will be different.
Now the good :
This is the part I like best… This resort offers so many options, you are bound to find something you like.

FOOD : I personally enjoyed most dinners. (We didn’t care for the Bamboo Restaurant, and while many people on TA loved the Ribs and More, we thought it was just OK). The restaurants we enjoyed the most were the Mexican, The Steak House, the Brazilian (#1), and the Seafood (Punta Emilia on the Beach). Marcos at the Brazilian restaurant was an amazing guy. Always smiling, and fast with the Skewers. We also liked the Mare Nostrum a lot, but the 4 others were better. We didn’t try the Italian or the Tepan Yaki Japanese. We still ate at 7 different places during our stay which is amazing. We would have loved to try the Japanese, but it seems to be hard to get 4 seats at this restaurant. The Breakfast buffets are amazing, and offer everything you see at other All Inclusive resorts. We had most of our lunches at the pool buffet on the Colonial side, and thought it was the best place. One of the best servers works there. Filomena is exceptional. She would remember us from previous days, and bring us our drinks before we even had to order. She was always smiling, and made us feel very welcomed.

GROUNDS : Quite amazing I must say, you can see a lot of wild life, the flora is amazing. There is one thing that must be said though… What is it with people feeding the raccoons, and the coatis right next to the sign that says “Don’t feed the animals”. We’ve seen, wildlife throughout the entire resort, but we’ve only seen people feed them next to the sign that said not to… Maybe the sign wasn’t clear... There was only text in 3 languages, and a clear pictogram… ?!?

BARS : Drinks are NOT watered down, and if there is not enough alcohol in your glass, simply ask for more. They will do it however you want it. Most bartenders really know are to make good drinks. There is a drink menu, but most will do just about anything you ask for… We even had a special drink made at the White Sand where we would tell them all the ingredients and quantities. (they loved it, and so did we).

POOLS : I was really excited to know about the 2 adult pools. One of which was right next to our building. Those pools are just soooooooooo boring. I knew there was no animation there, but they are just dead. They play SPA or Elevator music, and it’s not even loud enough to ear when you are not at the bar to order a drink. Everybody is quiet as if someone had just died. They should call them “La piscina muerta”. We still went to the Isla most afternoons because we enjoyed Freddy’s company. The main pools are huge, and beautiful, and enjoyed them as well.

BEACH : The beach is just gorgeous. Magnificent. The water has so many shades of blue and turquoise you never get tired of looking at it. I had brought my water shoes (as suggested here)but never needed them. There are some parts of the water where I would have needed them, but we just got in the water where it was nice and sandy. You surely don’t need any shoes to walk on the beach. (unless you go to the Salt water pool). I thought it was the perfect beach. The rocky parts have corals, so the snorkeling was fantastic, and the sandy parts are just fabulous for swimming. We saw thousands of fishes, and a really big ray while snorkeling. We really loved it. Bring your water shoes, but I don’t think you’ll need them.

THE SITE : The site is big, but we never felt we needed to take the trains. There are a lot of shortcuts, and walking is good. Of course, I can understand that someone with limited mobility would be impressed by the size, and possible have a hard time getting around, but if you are in shape and able to walk for more then 10 consecutive minutes, you will get around quite easily. Our girlfriends kept getting lost, but we got the hang of it quite fast.

RECEPTION : We had an early flight, and emailed the resort ahead that we would need an early check-in. We were traveling with friends, and told them that even if only 1 room was ready, we would be extremely happy. We also mentioned that we would like to be in the same bloc. When we got there at about 1 pm, one of the rooms was ready, we were in the same bloc, and we were even upgraded to Junior suite. They had told us that they would try, but could not guarantee anything. Well, everything was just perfect, and I thank you very much for it.

ROOMS : We were in junior suites in the COLONIAL section. The room was just fine. It was great in fact. I’m really not sure what people are complaining about.

RIVIERA MAYA : RM is great if you wish to go out without paying too much money with the pre-booked excursions. The collectivo system is great, and can take you almost anywhere along the 307. We visited the Tulum ruinas, and used the collectivo to get there, and back. The whole trip costed less than $11 each while Transat charged $37 for the exact same thing. Plus we could go at the time we chose, and visit at our pace, and get back whenever we were done. We would have loved to visit Akumal, and Playa Del Carmen as well, but ran short in time. We will be back. ;)

To summarize: We had an amazing time. This is a great resort. If you have chosen it, you will love it. If your choice is not made yet, don’t hesitate. You just can’t go wrong with the Palladium. Of course, there will be some small points you will like less than others, but all in all, I’m sure you will have a great vacation!

Special thanks to the Grand Palladium team. We’ll be back!

Room Tip: We think the Colonial section is best located because you can easily access any part of the resort q...

I went to Grand palladium last summer with my husband and two kids age 13 and 14 and didn't write review so thought I would do it now. My children are desperate to go back, they had a fantastic time and are hoping we will book again for this summer. We spent three weeks there and I don't think I heard the children moan once. Our children met lots of others and had a good time at the black and white club.

My husband and I are always happy if they are! We were then able to chill on the beach and use the lovely spa and gym in peace. The resort is huge and very much caters for the masses but as long as you are OK with this sort of environment you can't go wrong. The beach is nice although rocky in places and there are lots of loungers and the pools are plentiful and lively. There are many restaurants with lots of choice...although the buffet can be a bit repetitive but we were there for three weeks.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to families as there is a lot to do. We always felt safe in the hotel and our kids were able to go off on their own with their new mates. There are also plenty of family days out in the surrounding area, we went to Tulum, Xel-Ha, Chichen Itza, Akumel beach and we all also tried scuba diving for the first time at the hotel and my husband and son did lots of sailing.

There is also a lot of wildlife and the resort although huge is very well hidden in the surrounding jungle and it really is very well maintained...do bring lots of mosquito spray!

OK. The only reason why I would not rate this Resort / Hotel "Very Good or Excellent" is that it was MUCH too big! Not as personal as your smaller resorts, and the Food and entertainment was just "average". Otherwise - If you are very nimble and able to walk lots and lots... and lots, then you will like this resort. It was an absolutely beautiful piece of paradise with ALL the services, activities, restaurants, and bars you could ever ask for!
