Akumal Beach Resort

We stayed at ABR in the last week of January 09 and had a very nice time.
Just for a bit of reference, we are a couple in our late 30’s.
We like to lay in the sun, read books , snorkel, drink, and not spend a tons of cash.

In general we found the resort to be clean and the service good.
Book a superior room on the south end of the property, the other rooms look very rough.

OK the best parts (to us)
1) The beach is beautiful and is situated in a huge bay that is very shallow.
Snorkeling was very good and neat to see the turtles.
2) We liked that we could escape from the loud pool games by going to either end of the beach. It had plenty of space and chairs for everyone.
3) Not being at home. = )

The worst part:
1) the coffee is terrible and by far was the worst part of our stay. This may sound silly but I must have my coffee in the morning and I like good coffee. This also shocking to me as the resort caters to Italians whom also love their coffee.
Rant over.

Stuff that needs work:
1) the service in the buffet varied radically
2) the beds and pillows were hard (typical down here)
3) had trouble with our door not locking
4) did I mention the bad coffee?

The rest….

* The buffet always had something good to eat and found it to be pretty fresh.
*Made it to the Italian restaurant one night. Service was excellent as well as the food.
The best part was their coffee, it was excellent! Too bad we could not drop by in the mornings.
*Our room was clean and did the job, the maid always did an excellent job.
*The bar service was always very good.
*The animation team was fun and did a good job but did not harass you to play along.
*The pool looked very nice, never used it as we prefer the ocean.
*Wireless Internet in the lobby was nice but $20 for the week. I think if you use their computers its free.
*The security guys are very good and always around. Nice to see as your on a public beach.

In closing…
Book a superior room, bring your own coffee, and have a great time.

You need to read all the reviews and work through you own head to see if this place works for you. We were not suprised by anything nor bothered by anything because of the reviews. Four of us went on this trip and we had a blast and would return again. We wanted to try a smaller place with a nice beach. We found this resort to fit that and found we did not have to leave the resort at all. This resort saved us around $600 per couple. Because of the price and the resort setup, we had rooms with great views, on the beach. We normally do not pay the extra to get rooms with beach views. Here it is a minimal charge for the upgraded rooms do it.

We had no problems with the staff. Everything was always very clean. The entertainment group was nice and fun. The food was fine for us it seemed comparable or better to other all inclusives we've been too. The coffee was really bad. The Italian rest. was very good better then other all inclusives we've been too. The other couple we were with went to the Mexican rest. and said it was not real great but we did have a big beach drinking day so I think their thoughts on this one could be a little clouded. Due to Yukon Jim and his group at the swing bar I did not make it to the Mexican rest. to try it. They tell me I had a blast that day lol. We did meet really nice fun people at the resort.

It was nice to be able to snorkel off the beach and see the turtles. The reef is not in good shape but there are still fish to see and enjoy.

Lucy's is a hole in the wall but very good we went to it twice. We also went to the LoHa rest. and that was very good too. We did a fishing trip and caught a barracuda and missed a few other fish.

So what can I say, we loved it and will go back. Get the upgraded rooms. I think 2 weeks here could be to long in this resort. I do not think I have ever said that before. We felt safe at all times.

I can not stress enough to read all reviews, we were not suprised about anything.

I stayed ay ABR from April 19-26 for my hubby's and my wedding. the review:
“Hotel is a dump, beach is awesome, food terrible, service lousy"'s
first paragraph is 100% dead on with a to the point description of this place.

My experience wasn't as bad in the details but i knew that my guest were less that impressed. We all felt like we were an inconvenience to every single worker in the whole resort.

Karina the wedding coordinator did a great job arranging the whole day, except she had the freakin attitude that would flare up like a bad rash when I would ask her something... like where my ipod was located when the dj after the ceremony pulled a Hood-ini. So she gave me that attitude because she had got it from the DJ and i was supposed to read minds or something.

Everything about the wedding was perfect... it looked beautiful! (Except for the [--] heads that were standing at my alter in their italian speedos taking pictures just before the ceremony.) The value for the wedding was super awesome. So much better than paying for one back home in Alberta.

Now I'm not much of a nit picker and I love rustic settings but ABR was a DIVE!! And when you pay that amount of money.. things should be quite a bit better than they were.

The Value for the resort was pitiful. I personally like all inclusive resorts for the unlimited drinks and food, but the food was below mediocre, It was very bland. I stopped drinking all alcoholic beverages after the second day. The Alcohol they used was the cheapest of the cheap cheap cheapest cheap imaginable! The sugary drinks couldn't even cover up the terrible taste of the booze! The rooms were clean looking, but very poorly maintained. My room's door had so much space around it's frame that I could break into my room with a credit card!! The grounds were poorly maintained... My Oma had a very hard time walking on the walk ways. Grass patches were few and far between...

The only thing that was pleasing to the eye at the resort was the beach.... the snorkeling is great turtles were beautiful.... but I would not go back to this resort... I would rather pay a taxi to take to to the public beach to snorkel than stay at ABR again..... NO THANKS!!! I guess there was just one other thing I liked about this resort... the stars hanging in the lobby... (see pictures) But that was it.

My husband and I stayed here AGAIN. We cannot say enough nice things about this resort! The staff are amazing, the beach is awesome and the resort is a place to hang your hat at the end of the day. We don't come to ABR for the food or the 5* frills - this is not the place for you if that is what you are looking for. Jorge (food & beverage manager) is awesome, and so are all of his staff - Wilbert makes the best cappucino any time you want one, all you have to do is ask. These people are more than friendly and a pleasure to socialize with. The Excursion staff (Marco/Daniele) are amazing Italians! The entertainment group - my hat goes off to each of them - these people don't quit, morning noon and night! They are up and going by 9 and keep going, and going and going until midnight! Sometimes, even later! Alma is amazing to keep these entertainers sharp, whitty and fabulous!

The small town down the beach has everything you need for souveniers or miscellaneous tolietries. There is also a great little restaurant that serves way too much food for what you are paying - Turtle Bay - the eggs benny is awesome and the club house is ridiculously filling! Rent a golf cart and take a liesurely drive along Half Moon Bay and spend the day in Yal Kul. It is very much worth it.

Thanks again to ALL of our friends (now family) from ABR!!! We will come back home again soon!

STAYED FROM MAY 15TH TO 21. very disappointing.

Food: average what you'd find ina cheap buffet in N.America Fish was good, owned by Italian/french group but the pasta dishes we disgusting!! Ended up living for fresh fruit.

service:
Bartenders... the best, friendly and always willing to serve. but
Dining staff were non existent, if you are not willing to drop a tip every meal, they will disappear. Tips should be a reward for good service, but in the dining room, it either pay up or get your own damn stuff.
Reception: female receptions quite rude, will snap at you and ignore you. we arrived at 11 am on an early fring from Canada, with 2 small kids who did not sleep at all. we were exhausted and want to check in early to unwind and let kids sleep a bit. BUT NOOO the receptionist insisted check in time was 3 pm and she gave use our one key at 3.01sharp. WTF. the room was ready all morning!! what did they achieve by making us hang around in heat for 4 hrs.

Rooms: awful, cracked bath wall, cracked toilet seats. hard beds, noisy air con, grimy floors. like a bad flea bag motel

beach: nice but not perfect, some rocky corals and strong currents, not near Cayo Coco in cuba. which is what a 5 star beach is all about.
