We have visited this resort countless times and will always return for the natural beauty of Akumal Bay and the perfect beach. We are happy with the recent remodel but they are not quite 5 star yet.

LIKES:
REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN available in the gift shop.

LOW LIGHT in consideration of the Sea Turtles.

NO HASSLE BEACH TOWELS: no towel cards to manage, just endless towels available in several areas near the beach.

PLENTY OF BEACH PALAPAS with adequate lounges.

NO HASSLE A LA CARTE DINING: Unlimited access and no need to make reservations in advance which helps you stay in the schedule free vacation spirit.

IMPROVED DINING OPTIONS AND FOOD QUALITY

COVERED WALKWAYS allow you to walk almost completely the entire length of the resort and stay dry during a rain storm.

BEDS AT POOL SIDE AND BEACH SIDE with no additional fees.

BEACH SIDE DRINK SERVICE was excellent.

BEST STAFF IN THE RIVIERA MAYA. We are so happy that they kept their previous employees. They are genuinely friendly, happy and eager to please.


DISLIKES:
The reef, sea turtles and snorkeling are the greatest asset of this resort. The management needs to educate the guests regarding protection of the reef and sea turtles. I suggest some literature in all the rooms and perhaps a sign near the beach or snack bar with simple instructions not to stand on or touch the reef, wear reef safe sunscreen and never touch the turtles. I saw a life guard blow his whistle when someone stood on the reef but the offender appeared to have no idea why the life guard was blowing his whistle and continued to stand on the reef.

The food quality improved in variety of animal proteins (seafood, meats) but decreased the amount of vegetables. In previous years the quality and quantity of vegetable options was better. They also had better yogurt available. Now they have the highly sweetened and preserved Yoplait. This change is not consistent with the title, “…Wellness Resort”.

The PUBLIC BATHROOM stalls are too small. When you sit down your knees hit the door and the toilet seat is too flexible and slips off the bowl.

5 star resorts usually have cushions on the beach lounges.

The covered walkway was oiled daily with a product that smelled of gasoline and made me cough. It was slippery.



PENTHOUSE SUITE not worth the extra money. We paid extra for the penthouse suite which was advertised as having twice the square feet. The roof top patio was the only extra square feet. The room itself had less usable square feet than the standard rooms. The stairs to the roof top patio consumed areas previously used for closets, dressers, etc. Consequently there was limited area to put your personal items, clothing etc. We asked for an extra table, dresser or luggage rack multiple times for 3 days. Management told us they did not have any available. The only place to sit was on the bed. They did not have adequate electric outlets. We had to unplug the TV to charge our phones and computer. The unit needed many finishing touches, towel hooks, dressers, tables. The roof top patio was not a pleasant place to relax. The patio umbrella would tip or blow over with frequent Caribbean breezes. I suggest a permanent shaded area, perhaps in the upper back level. The patio also needs some additional furniture such as a table and chairs. The roof patio wall would look better with some turtles painted on it. At the top of the roof patio stairs they need a table/cabinet stocked with towels and bath salts and hooks for the bath robes.

We asked for extra hangers to try to help with the storage problem and they had none available. Not something you usually hear from a 5 star resort.


SAFETY HAZARDS:
No railings in the stairwells.
The public bathroom doors swung so forcibly they could injure someone or knock over a small child.
Walkways slippery after being oiled.

You will want some tape & card board to black out the two windows above the shower & toilet. There is no bathroom wall & door for any kind of privacy. We were in building #1 suite #1311, right above the construction, with a Jack Hammer wake up call 7:30 A.M. and Diesel fumes filling the room. No dresser's for clothes, no suit case stands for luggage. When I tried to find the phone # for the front desk the blue book is not very helpful. I tried a few numbers and let the phone ring 20 times, No answer. I had to get out of bed and get dressed to walk down to the desk to arrange our wake up call. Staff are not engaging so u feel like they are not understanding. These Penthouse suits have no railing for the stair climb. Wet feet from the hot tub could cause a serious slip and fall. The last bottom step is left with a sharp pointed edge, u must be careful walking to washroom in the night. It would have been nice if the balcony could have been shaded as the sun is just to intense to be in 7-7 everyday. I was really liking the spa area, there is a wonderful hot tub and sauna, but the steam room was not working, I prefer steam, I have high blood pressure and steaming is faster for me over a sauna. Outside of the buffet area there were 3 tables for people to eat, so the tables were full and we wanted to bring our ice cream outside to the outdoor Bar table and chairs. We were chased by Aracely and brought back into the buffet and told no. It was about 80-85 degrees in there every day we just wanted to eat it with the off shore breeze. No one was allowed to leave with any kind of plate or bowl. This area could use some ceiling fans to move the air around. The staff we encountered would say no, instead of giving a solution to making our experience a WOW. We changed rooms and were moved to building #3 suit #3301. When we got there, the Air Conditioner was not working, had to go down to desk to report it, as well there was no coffee pot. They did come and fix the Air just before dinner. And around 11 p.m. there was loud knocking on the door waking us up to give us two packages of Coffee, we needed a Coffee Pot...Another Day and a Half went by no Coffee Pot. So at dinner we brought the Machine to the front desk and stated we would pick up a complete unit in a few hours. Now as we settled into building #3. I would wake up in the middle of night to a fowl sewage smell, we would open the patio door in hopes to air it away, losing our cooled air. I conclude we came as a couple, this place looks beautiful and romantic but there were just to many anomalies that took away the Romance. We would not return...We did not have the up to Akumal Beach Standard Dress Code for the Four Restaurants on the property so that was a " Big No". Although we did observe other people getting in one night with Shorts and Sandals. It was hard to put to gether a balanced meal at the buffet noon and evening. Raw Beef, Powdered Mashed Potatoes, undercooked potatoes all week. We could not eat any more pasta. If you walk down to the dive center there is a restaurant with wonderful food and great service. P.S. we do not eat fish, so I can not say if those choices were good or not...

This resort is a gem!!! The moment you're dropped off in front of the lobby you're impressed by the vast ceilings and dark wood that covers the floors - very zen. It's a smaller resort which allows for easy ocean access and incredible views no matter where you are on the property.

The rooms are clean and large, the beds very comfortable (memory foam) and the pillows are wonderful. The air conditioning and fan worked beautifully and kept us very comfortable all night despite the heat outside. The room is stocked daily with plenty of bottled water, various pop, beer, chips and a chocolate bar. There were no set of drawers but in the sink area there was a large wardrobe with hangers and shelves to unpack your clothes - plenty of space. The jacuzzi was a nice treat too! It takes a bit of time to fill but is worth it. The cleaning staff are incredible also! They literally clean every corner of your room and under the bed.

The food was amazing! Roger in the buffet will make you any type of eggs you'd like! Lots of choices here and you always have a beautiful view of the ocean just steps away, and the breeze coming through the windows is wonderful. The restaurants were great too - it was fun to try all of them! The service was perfect every time. Good times to go were around 7pm (very little to no wait time).

The beach was exactly what we had been hoping for. The sand was white and soft and the swimming was always refreshing - perfect to cool you off. Snorkeling was amazing, and if you happened to need any equipment you can borrow it for an hour at a time or rent them for the day at a small price. Paddle boarding was a lot of fun too and worth a try!! The activity staff were energetic and always encouraging people to play beach volleyball or do aqua size in the pool or learn salsa - on the same note they were never pushy or made you feel uncomfortable. There was always room on the beach and it never felt overly busy at all. We did get up early to reserve beach chairs but other than staying up to see the incredible sunrises you could head back to your room until breakfast.

(The only thing I'd note is that there is not much of a night life here, which was fine with us... There is a place that stays open 24hrs but many people head back to their rooms before 11pm).

Now for the service. I can not say enough about all the staff that keep this resort running. Whether working in the restaurants or buffet, waitressing, serving, cleaning, keeping people/kids active, even removing the seaweed - every single person was courteous with a smile, helpful, and hard working. The place was always immaculate and no one ever stood around 'waiting' for a tip (but always deserved one!). I have never felt more safe or more well cared for than I did here. This resort is a gem and my husband and I had the most relaxing, wonderful time here. We would love to come back again soon!

Just returned from a fabulous 2 week vacation at Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort, from April 2 to 16, 2015. This resort is small, very well situated right on the beach, with a view of the beach and ocean everywhere. Our room was facing the ocean in building 2 (penthouse suite 2310) and everything was close by. A great view as you wake up from your room, then the same super view at the buffet restaurant, and the lobby bar was the best place to just sit in shade and the cool breeze. The beds are super comfortable and the rooms are clean. As mentioned by others before, a dresser in the room with drawers instead of a table would be more convenient to store clothes, but we managed very well. The service and the staff were great. No hassle for beach towels, which was very nice.The food at the buffet was very good, with plenty of choice for anyone; we ate at all 4 a la carte restaurants and enjoyed them all except the Gourmet, there was 9 in our group and no one liked it, but that depends individual tastes.

This resort had no "shows", but there was music with different groups in the lobby bar every evening where you could sit, chat or dance, a cool breeze and the moon shining on the ocean. This was perfect for us.

I would recommend this resort to anyone who likes a small resort and, although we don't usually go to the same resort twice because we like to see different places, we will definitely return to this one.

We just returned from Akumal Bay. What a great resort. Exactly how they should be laid out. Everything near and facing the water. Constant breeze was great. The pools, the bars, most restaurants all right by the water. This also made for a very short beach. Wide property, but as I said a short beach, so you're lounging literally feet away from the water's edge. Great! Lots of seaweed but they were continually, diligently removing it....A L L day long. Great "ground crew". Great Beach. Landscaping was impeccable - great job here too!
The staff was Awesome! As a whole, definitely one of the best staffs I've had yet in 25+ trips to Mexico. Lots of good ones. Clemente, Samuel, Fernando, Felipe, Melissa, and more, and of course, Wilbert (why not?)
"Managers" though...not so much. It'd be nice to see these guys pitch in, instead of berate/intimidate. Scare tactics in the US don't work. That's not leading people. You know who you are Manuel, Alejandro...One area stopped serving the guests for a solid 30 minutes. They had to clean for an upcoming "inspection". Meanwhile, the guests were ignored. Pitch in guys and stop pointing fingers....well, unless you're a hostess of course. Then Alejandro is all "smiles".
Couple other minor issues here. 1) Put a couple ceiling fans in the bar between the Gourmet and the Asian. Gets a little hot there. 2) If you're going to take a wake call up - make it. check out day we did not get a wake up call after scheduling the previous day. 3) Need some more chairs in open areas. Just plain stack chairs on the patios even.
Bottom line, very relaxing. Some complained about lack of entertainment. Didn't bother me. Quiet place, "todo bien".
Buffet was average. Not bad, but nothing special. Only ate at the Brazilian. You've heard of the "meat sweats"? Well, we got the meat "squirts". So...
Room was good. But no towels one day....And....the biggest issue here - no separation of the bathroom with the rest of the room. Didn't bother me, but this is an issue. Needs addressed.
Town was not enough for me, so I would not return based on that. But I'd LOVE to have this place in Playacar!

Check In:

When we first arrived, our room wasn’t ready yet, so we changed into bathing suits, and hit the beach & pool…..of course with a few cocktails mixed in! We went back around 3:30 and they put us in building 1 on the 3rd floor. Unfortunately, our room was behind many trees, and had (zero) view of the ocean. We had requested bldg. 3 through a few emails, and weren’t very happy with the view. We went down to the desk, and requested to be moved. At first they tried telling us they were sold out and had nothing to give us. After letting them know this wasn’t going to be acceptable, we agreed to stay in that room just one night, and be moved the next day. Sure enough, they took care of us, and they upgraded us to a penthouse suite in bldg. 4. The view was to die for, and the room was perfect. There is a lot of talk online about which is the best building to be in, so here is what our thoughts are……Building 1 & 2 are just north of the main lobby & restaurant area. This is also where the main pool is. The beach out front of this area is the most popular, because it close to everything, but most importantly, it’s on the only swimmable section of beach. Building 3 & 4 are just south of the main area, and have an UNswimable beach (all rocks). We loved building 3 & 4 as it was so much more quiet, and the walk to the main areas for food and drinks is minimal at best. If we go back, I would request either 3 or 4….with 3 being just about as good as it gets for location (IMO).

Towel Game:

Unfortunately, the towel game is in full effect here, but not in all areas. If you want a spot in front of bldgs. 1 & 2, where the swimmable area is, and the main pool….you will need to be up and out claiming your spot by 6-6:30am. I am an early riser, and was up to catch the sunrise almost every morning. I watched people come down and claim their spots like vultures. I watched one lady claim 8 chairs one morning by putting a single flip flop on each one!! There is a sign on every single palapa saying that your things will be removed if left for more than 1 hour, and that reserving chairs is not allowed. Unfortunately, these signs on the palapas are being completely ignored, and hardly enforced by the resort. Now there is some good news. If you go down to the rockier section of beach in front of bldgs. 3 & 4, you could find a palapa or bali bed all day long.

Seaweed:

The seaweed was pretty thick on certain days, and it’s floating just about everywhere. The ABR staff was out there every day doing a great job picking it up each and every day, but it’s a battle that is just about impossible. This is something that ABR does as good as they can with, but until the ocean currents change, this will be present. For anyone worried about it…don’t. It is a little bit of a hassle with weeds while swimming & snorkeling as it drifts into your face and body while out there, but it’s not so bad as to ruin your trip. We just snorkeled around it the best we could, and the further out we went, the better it gets.

The Room:

We were in 4306 a penthouse suite on the 4th floor. The room was spotless. They had beautiful towel art waiting for us along with rose pedals on the bed…a really nice tough. Between the fresh flowers they brought us, and the complimentary dessert they brought up one night, it was really nice. The bed was super comfortable!! So many beds in Mexico are like rocks, but these are really nice, and we both slept like babies. There is no dresser so we used the shelves in the closet along with the couch to unpack our things. A dresser would be nice, but certainly not a deal breaker. The shower and the toilet are right next to each other with a wall to divide, along with swinging glass doors. The wall and the doors do (not) go to the ceiling so let’s just say that bathroom noise could be an issue for some!! LOL There was a set of stairs leading up to the roof top deck which was very private. There were two lounge chairs up there along with the Jacuzzi. It’s a great little area except for one thing…it’s like an oven up there. The walls are high enough for total privacy, but block all the wind. There is no way anyone could sit up there during the day…it felt like it was 200 degrees up there. Of course we just used it at night for some star-gazing which was great.

The Food:

The buffet was decent, not great. If you are looking for top notch gourmet food, you will be very disappointed. If you understand what All-Inclusive food is, then you will be okay. The breakfast buffet was our favorite, as we loved the fresh omelets and fruit every day. Lunch buffet was hit or miss. We went in one afternoon and they were serving ribeye steak which really wasn’t ribeye, but it was delicious!! We both thought the guacamole was very bland no matter where you tried it. If you added some salsa, onion, tomato, and some lime…it was much better. The chips just suck, no other way around it. The snack bar was definitely a little rough. I tried a hamburger there that made Mcdonalds look like fliet mignon…just horrible. To be fair, I had a couple of (freshly) grilled burgers inside at the lunch buffet that were very good. The stuff they put out at the snack bar just didn’t hold well. The sushi bar on the beach was again, hit or miss. The first two times we had sushi there, it was very good. The last two days we were there, the sushi bar had NO FISH!!! Maybe it’s me, but please explain to me how the rest of the resort has fish, but the sushi bar does not??? Sorry, but trying to serve imitation crabmeat as sushi is ridiculous. We tried two of the restaurants, the gourmet & the rodizio…we went to both twice. The gourmet restaurant was very good, but portions are tiny. The second time we went there I just ordered two dinners so I didn’t walk out hungry. The rodizio was quite good as well. I really enjoyed the steak here along with the grilled chicken. The pork and the turkey were dry. Over all, I’d give the food a solid “C” grade. Some days good, some days not so great. For an AI resort, it was what we expected.

Beaches/Pools:

The beach here is just awesome. There are 15 shades of turquoise water just staring you in the face every time you lift your head up to look. The water is relatively calm, but the wind was pretty relentless all week keeping the small waves coming in. The water temp I’m guessing has to be close to 80 degrees, and sure felt great on a hot day. By the way, the weather was perfect….85-88 and sunny every single day. The main pool is very nice, but it’s pretty busy at times with the kids. There are small dipping pools in front of bldgs. 3 & 4. These were great!! We spent some time sipping cocktails while draped over the edge of the pool staring at the ocean…it was heaven.

Snorkeling:

This is the main reason I chose ABR. I wanted a resort with great snorkeling right on site, and the reef out front didn’t disappoint. We walked down to the Lol Ha a couple times to snorkel, but the crowds are just insane down there…it’s really sad to see. Our first snorkel down by the dive shop & Lol-ha we saw at least 10 turtles…it was a fabulous snorkel, but the crowds just drove us away. After 2 snorkels in the crowds, we decided to just stay out front of ABR for the rest of the week, which really worked out great. The reefs out front are awesome. Once you get out far enough to get away from the silty cloudy areas, the reef is alive with life. We saw turtles almost every time out without having to go down to the crowded areas. Some days were better than others for visibility as the wind had things a bit stirred up out there…but we did find some amazing days with awesome visibility. I took over 200 underwater shots, and was lucky to capture some great pictures of the sea life. I pray that the folks in Akumal find a way to stop the massive amounts of tours, they are ruining this bay with the insane amount of people they dump on this beach every day. Really so sad to see….thank God we had our own little reef right out front that is just as good if not better.

The Staff:

All I can say is WOW!! These are some of the warmest, most friendly folks I’ve come across in just about any resort I’ve ever stayed in. They treat you like royalty here, and all have a genuine smile. There is a single worker I walked past all week that didn’t give me a friendly “Hola” as we passed. From the front desk to the bartenders to the hostesses…they were fantastic. A couple that need mentioning….Wilber at the main bar….just so fun to be around. Patricia a beach server…just so sweet and nice. I’m sure I could probably name at least 10 more. Great service = happy guests, period. This staff is doing their jobs well, and deserve two thumbs up….WAY UP….great job folks!!!

Bottom Line:

WE WILL BE BACK ;-)

Room Tip: Bldgs 3 & 4 are the most quiet.

I've reviewed ABBR a number of times (5 previous times) and still love it here since the renovation. We returned in late Feb. 2015 for 2 weeks. As a consumer, the increase in cost ...is well worth it. This special little hotel still retains its own lovely Mexican charm even with all the excellent changes. ABBR had to do something to keep its marketshare with all the competition in the area, and I feel they have done a beautiful job.
More staff in many areas of the hotel...nice to see; still friendly as ever, but their additional training has paid off...and they look and behave much more professionally. Always a lovely smile; good morning, good service...the whole works.
The new restaurants are a terrific addition. We loved the Brazillian one...went 3 times over the 2 weeks...just beautiful presentation, and delicious food. Actually...we enjoyed them ALL...my only wish is that ONE of the restaurants (ie. the Gourmet) is for adults only...no little ones to run around. More romantic too! In addition, one cannot book any reservations....so because I am diabetic, I must go to the early seating.....which means lining up by 5:45 p.m. Dear Management...please consider accepting reservations for even just one restaurant.
Nice changes to the older sections....really enjoyed our stay in good old building 4 (which was 6)...the new duvets are great, the beds are so much more comfortable..incredible....BUT...why not add some lovely local paintings to the walls....with bright Mexican colours! Neutrals are nice, but we are in Mexico! Let's celebrate with SOME colour!
Grounds are gorgeous....great improvements have occurred and more in progress. For anyone that has stayed at El Dorado Seaside....ABBR has very similar beautiful grounds. Groundskeeping crew are working very hard. The back lane way is much improved. The yoga pavilion is wonderful....GREAT experts to run the classes daily...such a nice addition. The spa is now open and it really is pretty !
Yes, as many have mentioned, one has to get up by 6 a.m. to mark a chair....in the new section by beach in front of building 1 and 2. Maybe 6:30 7:00 a.m. latest for buildings 3 and 4. We initially started in building 1 in garden view suite....but quickly requested to be moved down to 3 and 4. We just prefer the more relaxed vibe down there!
Evening entertainment is lacking for now....their entertainment team are lots of fun (like the new uniforms and colours..pink then blue...very noticeable!) They are trying so hard in the evening "shows" ....but they need a proper stage built for them again in the main bar palapa or in the theatre. . They have done a very nice job renovating the original theatre area...but many people aren't aware it is even there. Why not just create better signage and mention by some staff members through the day or after supper. Also..start the show in the theatre a bit earlier around 9 p.m.?? Hopefully this will be addressed in the near future.
I could go on and on, but I won't. Just G and check it out for yourselves! We are hoping to return this May. ABBR is a very special little place. WE have never returned so quickly to the same resort. Thank you to all the wonderful staff...so many to mention. New Team on the front desk...very patient, kind and helpful.
